So Ireland have long struggles to fund meaningful matches for our fringe players, practically zero A or U19 sides have ever played decent teams. CI seem to have reached a rather clever (IMO) solution, combine both the A and U19 teams. Announced a game vs Bangladesh and a first ever tour of a Full Member nation in autumn

Ireland Wolves is the chosen name for Cricket Ireland’s new joint Academy and A team. The side will play for the first time in 2017 against both county and international opposition, before rounding off the year with a three-week tour of a Full Member country.
Cricket Ireland Performance Director Richard Holdsworth explained the rationale behind the team’s new identity.

“The new name is simply to allow the national selectors greater flexibility in the team they select depending on the opposition,” said Holdsworth.
“We do not feel it is appropriate to call a team ‘Ireland A’ unless it is our next best XI players outside the national team. However there are times when we would rather play more of a developmental side if the opposition is a little weaker.

“This new name fits well with the culture we are trying to create in the national programme, and gives greater flexibility in selection.”
Cricket Ireland have also unveiled the 2017 intake for The Shapoorji Pallonji Cricket Ireland Academy. There will be no fewer than 34 players in its ranks next year, with 12 included in the senior section, and 22 in the emerging group (15 boys and 7 girls).

Pete Johnston, Acting National Academy and Performance Manager will lead the 12-man senior academy squad. The ambitious programme for the squad includes a game against a Bangladesh XI to help them prepare for the tri-nation ODI series in Dublin, a 3-day match against Scotland A, three-day and T20 clashes with County 2nd XI’s and an autumn tour.

In addition there will be training camps at the new European Cricket Centre at La Manga, which will also host a camp for the Emerging Academy Group under the tutelage of former Irish international Ryan Eagleson.
Johnston is relishing the opportunity to mould the next generation of Irish stars in perhaps the most exciting period in the country’s history.
“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to help shape the new Academy structure and work with our emerging and senior players,” said Johnston.

“In keeping with Cricket Ireland’s strategic pillar of producing winning teams, the development of these players through appropriate training and meaningful fixtures will act as the rocks upon which they build towards being successful professional Irish cricketers of the future.
“The Senior Academy is now a finishing school for our ‘next cabs off the rank’ while Ryan Eagleson will continue to develop our emerging talent. The players in both squads have already impressed me with their hunger and desire to sacrifice and commit to Academy training.
“They began training around a month ago and there have already been two very successful Academy weekends that consisted of video analysis, yoga, character profiling, leadership and team values.

“The onus has been bestowed upon these players to push performance up and drive new benchmarks, be that in fitness, skills, nutrition, lifestyle or any of the other aspects required. I have no doubt that they are capable of this and will be supported with the appropriate resources required.

“It is the start of an exciting journey for all the players as they strive to establish themselves within the pack, firstly as Wolves and then as capped Irish cricketers.”

Also, the years contracts have been announced. Slog asked before IIRC whether Irish players would choose county over country, Joyce and Niall have both committed to Irelands domestic scene (though tbf they are both near the end of their careers which may have made the decision easier) with Joyce available to Sussex on a cover basis. Great to see such commitment, Joyce in particular is still arguably the best batsman in county cricket.

Ed Joyce is one of ten players to agree a central category-A contract with Cricket Ireland in the list released today by the governing body.
There are also three new-comers to full contracts in Irish Player of the Year John Anderson, Andrew Balbirnie, and Jacob Mulder.
The commitment of Joyce to both Ireland and the Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial Series is a real boost as Ireland continues to strive towards Test cricket.

“Coming back to play full-time for Ireland and also play in the Inter-Provincial series was a big decision but also quite an easy one in the end. Test cricket is the pinnacle for any cricketer. Ireland has a huge opportunity in the next few years to play at the highest level and I want to be part of the team that plays Ireland’s first test match,” said Joyce.
“With Ireland’s fixture list growing year on year it makes sense to come back at this stage.”

“Also now that the interpros have first class and list-A status, I wanted to be involved right from the start and lend my experience to that competition.
“We’re at the stage where we need to be more consistent and competitive as an international side and we also require the interpros to improve and provide a steady stream of players ready to perform well for Ireland. My focus in the next few years while I’m still playing, is to help us achieve both of these goals.

“It’s a really exciting time to be an Irish cricketer and I can’t wait for the 2017 season to get going.”
Ireland have ODI’s in 2017 against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and West Indies on home soil, as well as playing England at Bristol and Lord’s.

Cricket Ireland Performance Director Richard Holdsworth welcomed Joyce’s decision to play a full role in the coming season saying: “We are delighted Ed has agreed to return home to play in Ireland’s inaugural season of domestic first-class cricket.

“It has been one of our strategic objectives to bring players back home from England and for Ed to be the first is very appropriate. He has given great service to Sussex as an outstanding batsman and leader, and we are grateful for their support to Ed’s Ireland career over those years.

“Ed will not only be based here in Ireland training with the national squad, but will also help our next generation of international cricketers in a specialist batting and leadership coaching role, working with the Shapoorji Pallonji National Academy and Ireland youth squads as well as mentoring some national performance squad players.”

Nine others players have agreed category-B contracts - those with other employers, such as county cricketers.

New players include Barry McCarthy and Greg Thompson, while Niall O’Brien - no longer playing county cricket - will play his first season of Inter-Provincial cricket, as well as taking on a new specialist wicket-keeping role.
Holdsworth continued:“Barry McCarthy has had a great start to his international career and fully deserves a contract, whilst Greg Thompson has proven his ability in the T20 format in particular.

“It is great news for the Inter-Provincial series that Niall will be joining Ed Joyce in our new first-class competition, but also playing a key part in developing our young wicket-keepers in the national pathway.
“We shall be announcing more specialist coaches over the coming months in a plan to identify and develop key skill areas for Ireland-based coaches.”
Further incremental contracts will be announced in due course.

Does Ireland have a domestic T20 league. Might be a good starting point.
