Currently bullying England like they're schoolkids.

Would have made an already exciting WC even more competitive surely...

Ermm sure they would its really like Pakistan and India really thrashed the afghanis did they...

Their overall campaign still reads played 9 and lost 9 though.

I think Ireland would have caused a couple of upsets like they have done in the past. They are totally destroying England as we speak. Although its in tests, they are looking like a calm and assured side with a plan.

As aloo paratha mentioned in one of the threads, it doesnt make any sense that qualifiers were carried out in a different country when WC was to be played in Eng. Ireland, Neitherlands and Scotland would have been more at home than Afghanistan if the qualifiers would have been in UK.

Very valid point. Ridiculous to have qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

On the other hand for the 2023 WC you can have Bangladesh or Lanka for qualifiers.

Ireland and perhaps Scotland both could have been a part of the world cup.

The 10 team world cup works well for competitiveness but world cup has always given a good thing to eye for the associate countries. People think the WC is only about the top teams winning the cup but what happens underneath is more important. Bangladesh and Ireland both made their mark by winning matches in the world cup.

Ireland currently looks to be better than Afghanistan but Afghanistan went to World Cup fair and square. No point in debating about that.

In that qualifier, Scotland did better than Ireland. Ireland was completely down and out.

I would have simply given the slot directly to Ireland and made them co-hosts along with England. That would have done a lot of good for their cricket and getting more engagement locally as well.

the whole qualifier thing makes more sense if you had 12 or more teams. for 10 teams you might as well pick the top 10 ranked ones or go by hosts + remaining top teams.

They're much more deserving of a world cup place as well as cricketing rights as compared to Afghanistan who are downright rotten, mediocre and one of the worst teams in world cricket plagued with dirty politics and unprofessionalism.

They are doing well in the test but it’s a different format. Afghanistan did win the qualifier. But I do agree that the Qualifiers should have taken place in England.

Afghanistan only looked strong because Rashid Khan bullied the associates to get his ATG stats. Rashid got exposed brutally in the WC.

Qualifier round was made to avoid one sided games. I think that was achieved to some extent.

Afghanistan actually beat West Indies twice in the qualifier (once in the group stage and once in final). That West Indies team was full strength side.

Even though Afghanistan did horribly in the World Cup, they deserved to be included because they won the qualifier.

Perhaps it would've been better if the world cup was hosted by Scotland and Ireland also (so England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, the whole of UK pretty much)

Both Ireland and Afghanistan deserved to play in World Cups.

Ireland had the chance and lost. Afghanistan earned their spot. We were lacking in the qualifier.

Question is irrelevant anyway because both teams clearly deserve to be there, as do Scotland and Zimbabwe.

Present Zimbabwe doesn't deserve it. Scotland definitely deserves it.

Afghanistan beat Ireland in an ODI series in Ireland in 2018 and this year drew a series in preparation for the World Cup. So the notion that Ireland is better than Afghanistan in these conditions is simply false.

Ireland defeated Afghanistan in Dehradun in 5 match series ODIs in 2017/18.

Afghanistan are on par with Ireland.

I think Ireland would have been better because Afghanistan was unsettled side in the wc and very mismanaged.

AFGs earned their spot, so they deserved it. I think, cricket Gods wanted AFGs to be in WC otherwise they could have been eliminated 3 times in qualifier had results went other way - I think (forgot details), HK & Nepal created 2 upsets, then rain robbed ZIM against UAE. But still, AFGs beat WIN twice and deserved to play in WC - what the did in WC wasn't great though.

I think, ICC was in fault here - that WC Qualifier should have been played in UK (or Ireland), and I am pretty sure one of Scotland or Ireland would have made it over the Afghans in familiar conditions. IRL - AFG ODI H2H is a bit puzzling, because I believe AFGs won an ODI series in Ireland, but IRL drew (or won?) one series in Asia couple of years back and then made it like 2-2 in India. Test H2H hardly matters because if AFG hacks play Test match on those Irish tracks against their County experienced seemers........... you know :(

Afghanistan should feel proud of how they batted and bowled against the big teams in WC
