This will be a historic test match. I can't wait. My 11 would be:

1) Azhar Ali - obvious pick
2) Imam-ul-Haq - I was one of the only people who thought he was a good selection and he has proved me right so far
3) Haris Sohail - batted well in warm ups
4) Asad Shafiq - century against Northants has secured his place
5) Babar Azam - found some form against Northants
6) Sarfaraz Ahmed (WK)
7) Faheem Ashraf - will play a role with bat and ball
8) Shadab Khan - was good against Northants
9) Hasan Ali - picks himself
10) Mohammad Abbas - will be good in these conditions
11) Rahat Ali - was good in warm ups

Mohammad Amir shouldn't play. He's really struggled and can't keep on getting picked because of his form before fixing.

We let a Div 2 side score 250 and 300 odd and needed the services of a rookie like Shadab to dismiss them in seaming conditions.

We might win against Ireland but it would be a right scrap. I sure hope our seamers learn to bowl and do so quickly otherwise an English phainti is on its way.

Azhar
Imam
Haris
Asad
Babar
Sarfraz
Shadab
Faheem
Amir
Hasan
Rahat

Would have played Fakhar but he won’t get picked and it’s not fair to throw him in without practice.

Last chance for Amir here, if I was Mickey I’d tell him he needs 5 wickets minimum otherwise he will be benched.

Why you guys worrying? Even Faheem will look like Imran Khan on that pitch.

Oh my lord. Six specialist batsmen will be needed here.

Bowl first and get the Irish out for a cheap total otherwise we're looking at a repeat of 2007.

What happened to your confidence from yesterday :D

Also, your bowlers exploit our conditions better than ours...

I agree it will be close. Pakistan experience will see them through.

It depends on who wins the toss , you cannot control the toss. Concentrate what you can do.

Would be suicidal for Pak to go into the game with only 4/5 batsmen. How can you play Sarfraz at 6 in this form + on this green top?

We need an extra bat and proper bat till nr 7. Shadab and Amir can form that lower order resistance at 8 and 9.

Hopefully Mickey understands this.

haha - comeon - we also have bowlers.

Help is at hand...

Another problem for Mickey is that he has not tried out Usman or Saad. Which means that he will have to play Sami Aslam if he wants an extra bat in there.

Pak should have at the least tested one of Saad or Usman in one of the practise games. We might regret it.

Surely they will trim the grass off that pitch? It looks more like a public park than a cricket pitch!

Will this be broadcast on Sky Sports?

The best way for Ireland to make a match of it is by preparing a green pitch. Their batters are used to playing on those pitches and their bowling will be suddenly effective. Any other way, they stand no chance of competing in the game.

Yes, they will trim it. How much? It depends on what they want. This is how most pitches look like few days before the game.

If the pitch will be anything like in the picture, it will be a mistake to go with 5 specialist batsmen.

Yes Sky Sports are showing it.

Ireland ready for historic first Test against Pakistan

Ireland prepare to play against Pakistan at Malahide in Dublin from Friday in what will be a momentous first Test match for a country with a rich tradition of the game.

The European side will become the first to debut in Tests since Bangladesh did so in November 2000 against India, after being awarded Full Member status last June along with Afghanistan.

The match will be Ireland’s first step towards being ranked on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings while providing their players with the opportunity to make an entry into the individual rankings with strong performances against the seventh-ranked side.

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "It is a massive occasion for everyone involved in Irish cricket., something that we have built up to for a long time, since the decision was made in June 2017 to get across the line in terms of Full Membership. Everyone has been looking forward to this week, so it is a big occasion for all involved.

"For the 11 lads who will take the pitch, it will be a fantastic occasion for them and their families but we have to also remember everything that has gone before in Irish cricket in terms of getting us to this stage, over the years.

"You’ve got a lot of past players – some of them are here with us, some aren’t, but we have to remember and recognise what they have done to get us to this stage because if it wasn’t for them, and everything that they have done, we would not have been lucky enough to be taking the field, come Friday.”

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed: “It is a privilege to be a part of this historic Test match and all of us are really looking forward to it. Ireland, who have a great tradition of cricket, are playing at home and I wish them all the best in this big moment.

“Ireland players feature prominently in the ICC ODI and T20I player rankings, and I am confident that in due course they will also make their mark in the Test rankings.”

Pakistan will gain one point with a win against Ireland and reach 87 points while a draw will see them slip to 84 and a loss to 81 points. The table is led by India at 125 points with South Africa placed second at 112. Australia (106) and New Zealand (102) are placed third and fourth.

As for the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings, Pakistan opener Azhar Ali will be the top-ranked batsman in in the Dublin Test. Asad Shafiq (joint-25th) and captain Sarfraz Ahmed (32nd) are the others in the top-50 while upcoming left-hander Sami Aslam would be hoping to improve his position of 74th on the table.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah leads Pakistan’s pack of bowlers at 16th position, while fast bowlers Mohammad Abbas (37th) and Mohammad Amir (39th) are the other prominent names in the team for Pakistan, who were top-ranked in Tests in August 2016.

As for Ireland, players like captain William Porterfield and his opening partner Ed Joyce, all-rounders Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien, and fast bowler Tim Murtagh would all be looking to make a fine start to their Test careers, having achieved decent rankings in the shorter formats.

In ODIs, Stirling (35th), Joyce (42nd), Kevin O’Brien (51st) and Porterfield (58th) are the leading batsmen while Murtagh (20th), off-spinner Andy McBrine (42nd), Boyd Rankin (58th) and George Dockrell (63rd) are the leading bowlers.

Joyce, who has also represented England in international cricket, is the most experienced Ireland player in first-class cricket, having played 254 matches, scoring 18,414 runs with 47 centuries. Among bowlers, Murtagh goes in with the considerable experience of having taken 712 wickets in 210 first-class matches.

I would not play Shadab on this pitch and try out another batsman to get them practice.

Pakistan need to play 6 specialist batsmen for starters, i think the bowling attack should be made up of 3 pacers and shadab. Playing 4 seamers will be overkill. Sometimes green wickets can be deceptive.

Kit is dope. @donalcozzie i'd imagine u must be really excited

The Test match will be rained off anyway. I have never seen a complete match being played in Ireland.

May be if both teams get bundled out in under 30 overs in both innings, then we can hope for a result in 2 days.

If I was a Pakistan batsman I would be more concerned about the clouds than the pitch. We have seen green tops in NZ offer no lateral movement whatsoever.

Damn Donal Cozzie your boys have the kit on point

No need to go with an extra bowler instead we should strengthen our batting department which is the major concern. We can easily bowl out Irish batsmen with 4 bowlers, but can we score enough with only 5 specialist batsmen? that is a big question!

Kits a beauty 💯

Keeping the forecast in mind will be very tough to get a result in. Lets hope we get some play the boys can have some time out there.

This match basically is a warm up no matter how hard people try to make it look otherwise.

Pakistan will thrash Ireland.

No matter what the pitch.

Test cricket is no joke and Ireland dont have a hope in Hell.

Even if the match is only 3 days its enough for Pak.

will ten cricket broadcast this match in Saudi arabia or any other channel can anyone please confirm ?

Posters are fooled by that green grass on track. I think, posters are bluffed by watching cricket on the burnt mud garbage in UAE, therefore any grass on the track is taken with fear. Actually, the best wickets are produced on what we call turf - that's high clay % with deep rooted live grass (so that moisture remains in top surface and it doesn't start to crumble with the game, neither gets dead like UAE dross). Old Mohali wicket was one of the greenest I have ever seen in South Asia and the groundsmen played dirty with PAK in 2006 CT - either side of that PAK-SAF game, that same wicket produced 550+ games in 2006 (equivalent to probably 700+ now), just by customizing the grass cut, moisture & rolling. That's possible if the wicket is built on firm base, with right type of grass and perfect mix of clay contents.

This is an excellent wicket, which can end in batting paradise or seemers dreamland, depending on what groundsmen do with the grass. This can be a fantastic hard wicket with deep rooted grass means wicket will be firm with true carry & even bounce - ball should come on to bat nicely. Now, if groundsmen keeps that grass, still it'll be good for stroke play unlike PCB's domestic green-tops built on soft base with thick layer of clay beneath, but game won't last for more than 3 days (may be scoring rate will be 4+, but any innings would hardly last more than 100 overs). If they take 2 cuts of the grass in next 2 days, use heavy roller and sun shines, this should produce 500+ scores in first 3 days in even contest. It's PAK vs Ireland, therefore predicting anything based on the look of the wicket is risky, but for an even contest, this can be a perfect Test wicket, which should offer all 22 players something over 5 days course.

No way, Ireland is going to keep that grass and test their luck to win first Test - rather, playing out for a 5 day draw should be their target and they'll take most of the grass out, I can bet. I think, PAK should play 5 bowlers here - play positively and keep a high RR (so that one day of rain loss is covered) and keep attacking fielding to take 20 wickets.

Shadab, Fahim, Amir, Hasan & Rahat are my 5 picks - I don't expect PAK to bat twice regardless of wicket, unless IRL puts them in. This is not 20 overs joke - the gap of individual skill & experience is too much for a 5 day duration.

Need to win this game. Been a while since we won a test. Good for Ireland to play their 1st test match.

You obviously dont watch too much.

Afghanistan had a 5 ODI series two years back, 4 were played without interruption.

Ireland, NZ, BD tri series last year, one wash out IIRC, rest all played to completion.

WT20Q - entire event went smoothly, bar final funnily enough which got washed out.

Of course rain is always a threat, Friday in particular the forecast looks poor, but then NZ is exactly the same in fact both Ireland and NZ's climates are classed as temperamental.

Obviously we'll have more rain affected games than most but thats hardly our fault. Still perfectly possible, particularly in Tests which rarely go 5 days anymore, to get results.

Hi Donal, can you list the scores of FC, 3/4 day game scores this year on this ground - if not full game, 1st 2 innings will do.

Its not been played on yet.

The Irish domestic season only started 2 weeks ago, and to keep the pitch in tip top shape its not been used yet, bar some low level club matches.

Your analysis in your previous post is accurate though. Malahide is a perfect ground. Good batsmen can score big, good bowlers can clean up. Generally it can flatten out in ODI's after the opening overs. Why I prefer cricket in Ireland, NZ, Zimbabwe. Cricket is at its best when batsmen and bowlers are challenged.

Injury forces Smith withdraws from Test Match squad

Nathan Smith has withdrawn from the Ireland Test Match squad due to injury, Craig Young has been called up as cover ahead of Friday’s Test Match according to Cricket Ireland.

Smith, the uncapped paceman, was unable to complete Wednesday's training session after suffering a side strain.

Craig Young, the 28-year old Bready man who debuted for the national side in 2013, has been called into the squad as cover for Smith and will join his teammates for Thursday's training session.

Cricket Ireland also revealed that Durham County Cricket Club-based Barry McCarthy picked up an injury in his latest county match against Leicestershire, and has been sent for shoulder scans, ruling him out of contention to replace Smith.

Ireland will take on Pakistan in this historic encounter in Malahide from Friday 11 May to Tuesday 15 May, and the daily highlights show will be available to watch on both RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player.

Just so people grasp the significance of tomorrow not just for the XI playing, but the 600 odd who came before them

Can anyone please help me with the broadcast chart? Which country is showing this test in which channel? Thanks in advance.

This is awesome...no greater achievement for a cricketer than playing Test cricket for their nation...

After reading this a part of me wants Ireland to win their inaugural test... it would mean the world to them.

Can't wait for this game. The Irish are wonderful sport fans so they should make this quite the event. Also, always poignant seeing a team debuting! Bring it on; I'd love Ireland to put up a decent show as mismatches are never fun, but really looking forward to our bowlers bringing it on this deck!

Ahh you're almost making me want you to win!

Congrats to Ireland.

Pakistan will need to play 10 times more hilariously bad than they did in 2007 to lose a test to Ireland. Pajama cricket lasts a few hours, test cricket is 5 days, upsets are more rare.

Expect about 50 overs play if lucky in first 2 days, forecast is good after.

Why didnt ye come last week! Weather was glorious here previous two weekends

People thinking too much into this game.

The rain is going to take care of most part of this match anyway and if either side win the toss they'll choose to bowl any way.

Even with our shaky batting, surely we should still be able to walk this one?

Day 3 is also bad No?

According to google, we'll be lucky to get more than 5 overs of play tomorrow, Saturday is fine, Sunday will probably have a couple of rain delays but will still get at least half the day in, and the last 2 days are fine.

Accuweather is more accurate.

If Pakistan lose this test which is highly unlikely, we can have a new ashes ? Lol

I think we have shed the pre tournament jitters with the second practice match. Will win the Ireland series 2-0 and the England series 4-0.

Would be quite a feat to win the Ireland series 2-0 when there is only one match

I would like to have seen more of an attacking intent by playing both Fakhar and Hasan.
