Catch the bookie, put into interrogation and hand over them into firing squad. We suffer so much for these criminals.

Amazing that something like this is news! What a world we live in. Cannot believe so many of these guys are lurking around.

Calm down, interrogation yes but excecuting him is a bit OTT. Just put him behind bars. End

how can they approach the captain so easily.. why cant they tighten security.. need thorough investigation and catch the entire network..

A player can be life banned but a bookie will get away with it at most a minor fine, what kind of justice is this?

In a shocking revelation, Pakistan cricket captain Sarfraz Ahmed has disclosed that he turned down a lucrative offer from a bookmaker in Dubai during the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka and reported the matter to the anti-corruption and security unit officials.

The incident has shaken the Pakistan team management and anti-corruption and security officials travelling with the team in the UAE, as they felt that the bans imposed on batsmen Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif for spot-fixing in Pakistan Super League might have stopped such moves.

“The matter has been handled as per standard procedure but there is a lot of respect for Sarfraz, who as a captain and player, has set a great example for his teammates on how to avoid attempts to corrupt the game,” an official of the Pakistan Cricket Board said on condition of anonymity.

“ICC rules don’t allow us to name player (s) in such cases where approaches are reported but yes Sarfraz got an offer and he immediately reported the matter to the concerned officials, who have taken appropriate action,” he added.

Incidentally, the man who made the verbal offer to the Pakistani captain is based in Dubai and is learnt to be known to the players.

An official in the PCB said that the team management has increased vigilance of players and reset curfew timings.

“On the insistence of head coach Mickey Arthur, there was a bit of relaxation for the players during the ongoing series in the UAE and they were allowed to meet friends and go out for shopping and dinners but now strict procedures and timings have been enforced again,” the official said.

The PCB had already changed the hotel of the national team in Dubai following the PSL spot-fixing scandal earlier this February which rocked Pakistan cricket.

The PCB’s anti-corruption tribunal banned Sharjeel and Khalid for five years after both were found guilty of beaching anti-corruption code during the PSL and were sent back home from Dubai.

UAE has ALWAYS been the hunting ground for these terrorists. Better financial opportunities for our players after the CT with Sarfraz even being gifted with a Mercedes, I suppose they will now think twice before even meeting someone suspicious.

Apparently he is not suspicious, all the players know him as he is some high official who has provided net bowlers in past..

He did what he should have done.Well done to him as our players have fallen prey to these bookies in the past.

Did not expect anything else from Sarfraz. He is very strict about discipline and never compromises on integrity. I hope the new guys stay away from these criminals as well.

I hope this sets an example on how important it is to report even an approach by a bookie. If you decline the offer, its not enough. Reporting in time is must. Keep this in your mind.

Coincidence? I think not. Someone was just not too happy with the recent success.

Glad, that the fruits of recent crackdown by PCB against fixing and those involved are showing up.

It’s about time that we shift our make-shift home to somewhere else. UAE is becoming a hot bed for bookies and fixers. We can probably move to Sri Lanka.

Well done Sarfraz, knew he is not a sell out.

Credit goes to PCB.

Atleast approaches are being reported now.

Are you really incapable of praising Sarfaraz?

Misbah does it all the time, so I don't know why you have such a problem.

This is exactly what should happen when such approaches are made.

People who rate Sarfaraz will not be surprised by this news. He is a man of integrity, honour and is someone who has always been passionate about playing for his country.

It's a shame a certain previous captain couldn't lead from the front. Instead he was too busy counting $$$.

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.

In USA, for cheating in gambling table, often they don't call police; rather bouncers give "whatever" in "cash" then and then. I think, these bookies need similar treatment instead of legal procedure - take them to an isolated room and break couple of cricket bat.....

I believe I know the gentleman implied in this post. Hard to believe. Is this individual close to Sarfraz?

I dont know sorry.. Just wrote what i read on news.. Apparently he was some high official in Sharjah cricket stadium and all the players and PCB people know him..

Very brave of Safaraz, these organised crime syndicates do not mess about. Wonder if he intended this to go public or not?

PAK should stop playing cricket in UAE. Entire place is toxic, on top of that those wickets are😩

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.

No one is suggesting having a party for him.

All posters have said is that he is leading from the front, and they expect nothing less from him.

In a country like Pakistan where players are sometimes threatened for life too this is an appreciable step by Sarfraz and sets the right precedence... In near past we saw how Nawaz, Irfan, and Sharjeel & Khalid (who allegedly fixed too) were approached for fixing but they didn't report..

Basically this! People are going gaga over Sarfraz without realizing that its part of his duty to report such incidents, especially in the aftermath of what transpired in PSL. You need not to praise a professional for doing his job.

Moreover, to all those people demonizing the bookies for making approaches, well lets be honest no one is forcing our players to take the bribes unless they wanted to. Yes a part of blame goes to bookies but most of it falls solely on our cricketers for succumbing to greed and accepting the offers in hope of making a quick buck.

Very brave of Safaraz, these organised crime syndicates do not mess about.

This!
Honestly I don't blame our players 100% for 'just turning down the offer and not reporting'.. Imagine we are in their place; coming from humble backgrounds wanting to play for Pakistan and PSL and then approached for fixing and consequences of naming them might be dangerous for us and our family ... PCB as an organization isnt doodh ki dhuli hui too.. Recently Khalid Latif's lawyer said in an interview that him and Kahlid have received life threatening calls and he has records of it too... i dont think he would be lying on TV.

'Turning down the offer' may be the best thing these players can do in such scenario.. so yeas its brave of Sarfraz!

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.
Easy for you to say. You have no idea what Sarfraz must have had to go through to report this individual. He was like a father figure to Sarfraz. I'm shocked.

No one is suggesting having a party for him.

All posters have said is that he is leading from the front, and they expect nothing less from him.

No one is suggesting having a part for him or awarding him with the Pride of Performance Award, but applauding him is still over the top. He has done what he is supposed to do, but then again, we are not used to having morally clean players so I guess this seems like a heroic act.

That may very well be the case, but I am only going by the news. If this person has been an influential figure throughout his life then of course it is going to be a shocking incident for Sarfraz, but nonetheless, he still did what is expected of him and what he is supposed to do.

You are simplifying the issue. It's not about morally clean/unclean players.

These syndicates are based throughout the subcontinent and wield an awful lot of power. A lot of players reject the approach but don't inform the PCB because they are afraid of the repercussions. It is about fostering an environment where players feel confident they can report such approaches safely. Sarfaraz is leading from the front in this regard.

Lets be honest, UAE and England are the hub of corrupt match/spot fixing syndicates. These are people that literally stalk the teams around pretending to be die hard fans.

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.

Pakistani Cricket/Cricketers have been known to shoot themselves in the foot many times.

That's what you are supposed to do. And if you don't, there is no point whining later when you are handed a ban.

Neither he was giving party nor was awarded, it was reported by him and fans are saying good job.

unfortunately corruption exist in every institution in Pakistan, and you can't blame fans for applauding Sarfraz for doing the right thing after what had previous "captains" done in similar situations.

England!!!?!!

Not sure what the problem here is. Traits like honesty and courage are appreciated everywhere in the world including the west.

You might recall picture of a plumber from USA who entered a mainhole to clean the blockage. His picture went viral and he received praises from all corners because he had displayed "the american will to get the job done". He even got rewarded for it by some company. At the end of the day He was simply doing his job and it was expected of him. He still received the praises because he did his job honestly and didnt look the other way when the problem was tough. So its not just Pakistanis who praise people for showing good virtues.

To praise acts of honesty becomes all the more important when you talk about subcontinent which provides a breeding ground to corruption.

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.

To be honest, it is applaudable as bookies can easily threaten his family if he reports them. Or threaten to do something nasty if the offer is not accepted.

It's not new to threaten players families.

There is nothing to applaud here. It is unfortunate that we are so used to having corrupt players that we are now appreciating players for not getting involved in match-fixing.

You need to take it from what you have. So going from fixers to this is a big step in Pakistan allthough it is unfortunate.

Guys - do not mention any names of individuals. Everyone is innocent unless proven otherwise.

It's not sad but a great sign that bookies are not able to have a stronghold on important players anymore. Not since the days of perhaps IK has a captain directly said that he turned down an offer from a bookie. A leader is the example for others. When he loses that aura of righteousness then a coup is around the corner.

Watching and reading different things since morning and my respect for Sarfraz has grown multiple times.
What a legend!
If only he had flashy hairs, an mba degree or fluent English he would be looked upon by Pakistanis.

There is no problem. I'm just surprised (shocked) at how much our morals have fallen. Never thought we would see a day where we will be praising/appreciating/applauding players for reporting bookies.

Unfortunately, he has thin hair, is a Hafiz-e-Quran and speaks with a lisp. People judge based on looks and everybody is guilty of it even schoolteachers. But I find it amazing how people still criticize him when he won the country the CT and the ODI team is on a 8 game winning streak.

True!
Sometimes i think Pakistanis don't deserve players like Sarfaraz. They deserve fixers, politicians, oath takers and selfish players.

People elect the leaders. If the citizens of Pakistan did not support those in charge, they wouldn't last a day. Sarfraz has the support of the PCB and a majority of the Pakistani fans. It's a small minority that are ungrateful.

Two questions:

1) On what day Sarfraz was approached for spot fixing?
2) And on what day Sarfraz reported it to PCB?

I think this bookie was not threatening enough and Sarfaraz did not fear anything from him to be scared from not reporting him. Most other bookies connected to dangerous elements can easily scare players and their families to prevent them from not reporting offers.

still Sarfraz should have reported it right away instead of thinking about it and not sleeping the whole night and then reporting it next day

Some people in the Pak media are idiots and just criticize for the fetish of criticizing. Comments "Why was Sarfaraz meeting that guy in his room so late at night?", "Does Sarfaraz really need to be friendly with every Tom, Dick, Harry out there?", "Why did Sarfaraz report the matter a day or two later?", "How long has Sarfaraz known the individual and has he ever been offered before which he never reported before?", "Why are the players being allowed to mingle with everyone out there?"

Creating a mountain out of a molehill

Most of these bookies are from a certain country but ICC chooses to just ignore it :(

Why does this have to go out to the media? Can’t it just stay within the PCB/ICC?

C’mon Mamoon!, you are aware of Pakistan cricket history.
I’m sure other players have been approached too but PCB is unique, PCB chairmen’s like petting themselves on their back for brownie points.

Sarfarz took one whole night before reporting it? Ban him for at least 2 years. He should have eported it before the approach even happened.

I'm guessing this was the original intention and somebody has fluffed their lines somewhere big time. Wouldn't be surprised if Safaraz's family is having to move location because of the incompetence of 1 or 2 individuals within the PCB. You might catch the bookie but the source is still active and usually pretty dangerous.

We are short of news, the team is doing well in cricket, how can we blame the PCB and force our own agendas when the team is whitewashing a srilankan side and has won CT in the past. Lets cook up something out of nothing

It's good that he reported to authorities, but i can't understand why Sethi announced this to the world? He shouldnt have tweeted that.

Sarfraz records statement to ICC about bookie’s approach

DUBAI - Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed recorded his statement on being approached by suspected bookie before the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit on Saturday.

The Anti-Corruption Unit also conducted a detailed interview of Sarfraz regarding the matter.

The officer of the Anti-Corruption Unit probed Sarfraz and asked questions such as “how long have you known the suspected fixer,” “have you ever taken money from the fixer”, and “have you ever accepted any gift from the suspected fixer.”

Earlier in the day, sources revealed that Sarfraz was approached by a bookie who made a spot-fixing offer to him during the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka in UAE. Sarfraz, however, rejected the offer and immediately reported the approach to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

It was reported that an “important” member of Pakistan squad had been approached by an international fixing syndicate, but the cricketer had foiled the spot-fixing bid and alerted the ACU officials. Sources revealed later that the cricketer in question was skipper Sarfraz, who was shopping with his family at a mall in Dubai when he was approached by a bookie ahead of the second ODI against Sri Lanka.

The bookie came up to the captain, who first thought he was a fan requesting for a selfie. The man, however, made a spot-fixing bid to Sarfraz who turned it down on the spot and reported the approach to PCB’s security officials staying with the team. Sarfraz also reported the approach to Director Security Colonel Azam in Lahore. Prior to the Pakistan-Sri Lanka series, there were reports that bookies were intending to approach players, in view of which the PCB's ACU team was already on alert.

Following the incident, the PCB forwarded the investigation into the spot-fixing approach to the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit.

PCB chairman Najam Sethi confirmed the approach, without naming the player. "A player was approached. As per rules he immediately reported to PCB who informed ICC. Matters are jointly in hand. No further comment," he tweeted.

The bookie who allegedly made a spot-fixing bid to Sarfraz is believed to be an employee of Sharjah cricket stadium. The suspect hails from Karachi and has been identified as Irfan Ansari.

He offered spot-fixing related to bowling changes, the sources said. The Sharjah stadium management has reportedly decided to take action against the employee in question. When approached, Irfan denied at first, but then said he "might have said something like that as a joke." He could not be contacted again for elaborations. Irfan is considered well known in the cricket circles in UAE and Pakistan.

The board, following the incident, tightened security measures for the team and issued fresh instructions to the squad to stay away from irrelevant people.

PCB security officials also restored the curfew timings for the players in the aftermath of the approach. The curfew had been ended after Mickey Arthur took over as head coach.

Credit goes to PCB.

Atleast approaches are being reported now.

same board but different players approached early this year didnt report banned and are out of the team.... credit goes to PCB yes and also a huge amount of credit goes to sarfraz. It depends on the players greediness to accept or refuse it. sarfraz gone ahead and report it, nevertheless how big that bookie was.. "Incidentally, the man who made the verbal offer to the Pakistani captain is based in Dubai and is learnt to be known to the players".

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/...fixing-concerns-three-international-captains/

Three international captains have been approached by fixers in the past six weeks and the International Cricket Council is currently investigating seven live cases as the battle against corruption shows no sign of slowing down.

It highlights the challenge facing Alex Marshall, the new general manager of the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, who joined in September having previously been the chief constable of Hampshire.

Graeme Cremer, captain of Zimbabwe, reported a suspicious approach before a Test match against West Indies earlier this month. Sarfraz Ahmed, captain of Pakistan, also alerted the anti-corruption unit of an illegal approach from a potential fixer before a one-day series in Sri Lanka. The third captain is not known. Telegraph Sport understands all three reported the approaches to the ICC’s anti-corruption unit within an hour, which the authorities believe is showing their education programmes are working, and that all contact by fixers was made away from cricket grounds.

The ICC is also using recently introduced powers allowing them to seize mobile phones to help investigate the new cases. Players will be banned for two years for non-compliance if they refuse to hand over their mobiles.

The sums being offered by fixers are believed to run as high as £150,000 and the disparity in some countries between playing international cricket and Twenty20 is a factor criminal gangs are looking to exploit. Sources have indicated that one international player claimed to have earned £3 million in one year playing Twenty20 as opposed to £100,000 if he had played cricket for his country.

There is also increased focus on youth tournaments and women’s cricket matches that are streamed on social media platforms. During the under-17s World Cup in Malaysia recently around £7m was gambled on legal markets, bets which the ICC anti-corruption unit believed were laid by corrupt gangs involved in illegal gambling in Asia. The worry for the ICC is that fixers are grooming young players at junior tournaments to become fixers of the future.

Three international cricket captains report attempted fixing approaches

The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit is understood to be conducting up to seven live investigations into fixing, with three international captains having reported illicit approaches in the past two months.

Of the captains, two names have already leaked. Pakistan’s Sarfraz Ahmed and Graeme Cremer of Zimbabwe have been reported to have rebuffed offers from intermediaries and flagged them up to the relevant authorities within an hour. The identity of the third is yet to be established and the ICC does not comment in such instances.

Sarfraz, whose Pakistan side won the ICC Champions Trophy in June, was contacted before a one-day match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi in October, while Cremer was reported to have rejected an offer by a former Zimbabwe Cricket board member to fix elements of their Test series against West Indies the same month.

That such high-profile names are being approached is alarming – although their response is viewed as evidence the education programmes are working – while the number of live cases shows the size of the task facing the ICC’s new ACU general manager, Alex Marshall, who began in September after a long career in the British police.

Of huge concern to the ACU is the proliferation of privately-owned micro-tournaments in the subcontinent and the Middle East, which feature local players and the odd recently retired “star”, and are seen as a possible entry-point for would-be corrupters into higher level scams.

The money on offer is understood to range from US$5,000 to $150,000, with the ICC having become increasingly aware that both women’s cricket, as revealed by the Guardian, and the under-17 and under-19 levels of are becoming areas of interest to match-fixers. The age group levels in particular are seen as a way of compromising young cricketers in order to exploit this further when their careers progress.

Since September, a revision to the ICC’s anti-corruption code has given investigators powers to request that players, coaches or administrators – at any level – hand over their mobile phones in order to access information. Reasonable grounds for doing so are required but refusal can now result in a two-year ban.

Marshall, who began his role as the new code came into effect, has been in Adelaide this week for meetings with Australian federal police and other agencies to improve the lines of communication and the pooling of information. It is the latest in a series of such visits around the world.

IRFAN ANSARI BANNED FROM ALL CRICKET FOR 10 YEARS

Irfan Ansari has been banned from all cricket for 10 years after the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching three counts of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

During the hearing, the Tribunal heard evidence that Mr Ansari approached Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed during the Pakistan series with Sri Lanka in the UAE in October 2017 with a view to engaging him in corrupt conduct by soliciting information from him. Mr Ahmed reported the approach immediately and an ICC ACU investigation ensued which resulted in these charges and decision.

Mr Ansari is bound by the code as a result of his affiliation to the Pakistan cricket team and also as a result of being a coach to two teams that participate in domestic matches in the UAE.

He was found guilty of the following three offences under the Code:

Article 2.3.3 - directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging a participant to breach the Code Article 2.3.2 by disclosing inside information.

Article 2.4.6 - failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and / or documentation requested by the ACU in October 2017. This included a request by the ICC ACU to take possession of and/or copy or download information from his mobile devices.

Article 2.4.6 - failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and / or documentation requested by the ACU in February 2018. Again this included a request by the ICC ACU to take possession of and/or copy or download information from his mobile devices.

Alex Marshall, ICC General Manager – ACU said: “I’d like to place on record my thanks to Sarfaraz Ahmed who showed true leadership and professionalism from the moment he reported this approach. He recognised it for what it was, rejected it and reported it. He then supported our investigation and subsequent tribunal.

“This is the first time we have prosecuted for failure to cooperate with an investigation since the new rules enabling us to demand the participants hand over their phone for examination and the sanction reflects the seriousness of the offence. It is an important tool to aid our investigations and continue in our efforts to rid the sport of these corrupters.

Good job by the captain!

This is why Najem Sethi Banned Mohammad Irfan and Nawaz. If you are being approached then report it simple as that.

This way the authorities could deal with it and banned those involved.
Problem is, these guys dont bother reporting then after 10 years they come on tv and say, oh jee we were also approached by we didnt do the bad deed.

Not reporting an approach is a valid justification to ban someone
