Is abolishing the police a good strategy to reduce police brutality?

I am seeing many BLM supporters wanting to defund the police. I think it is a horrible idea. Police (despite occasional brutality) is a necessary component of any society.

Just because one race is having problem with police doesn't mean everyone else is also having problem.

I have no problem with the police and I want them to stay. Reforms are needed but abolishing police force is unnecessary and dangerous.

Discuss.

Seems people always go for extremes..

It’s not the reduction that is needed.. it’s retraining... brutal force is used impulsively by US police.. this needs to be addressed. When to use it, how to use it.. there should be better guidelines and more accountability of the cops.. right now the rules and regulations are in their favor. They can get away with poor judgment or whatever.

Us cops kill more people than any country in the world in a year... more shooting deaths than anybody and they lead by a huuugggeee margin..

There obviously something wrong with it!

The tone of your message makes it sound like the blacks are at fault. The police are the ones with the problem.

To answer your question, police need a change at the top and they need more funding not less. Law enforcement needs to be a respected career not a job. We need intelligent skilled ppl policing communities.

All countries irrespective of the political systems, uses "fear of law" as it is essential to maintain law & order. Policing is the best way as these are people of the same society.

The issue lies of accountability, and that works both ways. As in USA, the blue lives should also matter.

My tone is not anti-black at all. I love all races equally but I oppose unreasonable demands (doesn't matter what race).

No group is asking to abolish police force except for BLM. That's why I asked whether it is something that is logical.

Anyway. Thanks for your answer. I also think police needs more funding and more training.

It depends on what this means, does it mean more community based policing or does it mean what it says on the label. If its the latter, then that is complete rubbish, we need the Police to protect us from criminals, not leave us at the mercy of criminals.

The one (cammunity policing) is what some are saying when talking about destroying PD, some say PD in thier cities is so bad that they will replace the entire department with a new reformed one and other cities are saying reduce the police budget because in US especially they're overbloated and give some of that money to sociaol programs

No one is saying just destroy policing completely

Even if you abolish the Police, you’ll still have some sort of policing in the society. When people realise the presence of police is non existent in their community is non existent they automatically form their own police type organisations.

Yeah and how well does that workout is based on societies not on actual laws which is scary if you think rural America.

If you abolish the police you'll have chaos in society. They may not be perfect but the role played by the police in keeping places safe is often underestimated.
Policing is not the problem but certain policemen or women may be. It is them that need to be addressed.

If my hand hurts, I would try to find out what the problem is and heal it, not chop it off.

People cannot imagine the surge in violent crimes without the strong presence of police , particularly in urban areas in USA. Police reforms are needed but nothing more than that. We all know who will be involved in most if the crimes without the police.

Lack of police/reduced police force in the U.S. will result in people taking law into their own hands (especially with the type of gun laws they have there) and then justifying their actions through a lack of police force.

This will lead to more injustice & incidents regarding 'self-defense' killings and whatnot.

Reformed police means look the other way when people of color are commiting crimes. Interesting times ahead for US. The anarchists have cashed in on the misdeed of a cop to have their revenge against the police and the state.
