Is accounting a well respected profession?

It's a profession that you can work in through all industries.

Get a job for one of the big international firms and believe me, it is prestigious enough.

Yes, but it is boring as hell and inflexible.

Finance is a better option, or perhaps economics.

Accounting is not a profession it's a subject. Depends what you do after your Accounting degree...ppl go in to audit, tax, corporate accounting, corp finance, etc...the possibilities are endless.

Research on what kind of work you want to do once you graduate and if an Accounting degree is the best way to achieve that job/career route.

We desis have a serious issue in thinking getting a degree will get us a good job, or a CA/CPA will ensure a good pay...not really true these days.

Go for an undergrad degree in something you will enjoy, and don't forget, the quality of your education matters most. It's not about how many degrees you have, but where you got them from.

Careers in Business are all about prestige, and people in finance/accounting really are suckers for brand name schools. For example, a graduate from University of Toronto will not get opportunities on wall street but a kid from University of Michigan or NYU will get tons. No matter how much smarter the UToronto kid is. Sad truth...go to the best school you can. It will only benefit you.

I am just a little curious. I know all professions are good.
Every profession is good if you succeed in it.

Just remember, just as your school grades only matter in terms of securing your university place in the subject and university of your choice, and once you have secured your university place and started your course, your school grades don't matter any more.

Similarly, your degree only matters in terms of getting you your first professional job. As time goes by, your university degree becomes less and less relevant, and your performance in your job is what counts. After a few years in your chosen profession, nobody cares about your university degree, not even potential new employers when changing jobs, as they are more interested in your professional knowledge, most recent experiences and career to date.

I thought you were in tech? I am in tech for a long time and it never gets boring

Accountants are considered the most boring and plain people on Earth. Prior to the Enron collapse in 99 or 2000, they were considered run of the mill but since then, govt introduced all these regulations for every corporate aspect and they need audits pretty much all year round so here in the US accountants are now hot commodity and a very very high demand college degree.

What made you think that ? . I did bounce around different places after left the acc field. Would've loved to stick in tech since its my passion but i never found the right direction in regards to what would be a good carrier path to take in tech. What do you do in tech and how do you like it ?

Absolutely. It has a lot of scope and there are plenty of jobs out there.

Respected no doubt about it. But seems incredibly boring as well.
