Several British police forces have largely withdrawn from Elon Musk's X social media platform as concerns over its role in promoting violence and extreme content persist, a Reuters survey of forces' social media output showed.

X, formerly Twitter, was used to spread misinformation that sparked riots across Britain this summer, and has reinstated British-based accounts that had been banned for extremist content.

Musk's comment in August that civil war in Britain was "inevitable" drew rebukes from Downing Street and police leaders.

Critics argue that Musk's approach fosters hate speech, though Musk has said he is defending free speech and has described Britain as a "police state".

Reuters reported in October that North Wales Police had ceased posting on X. Others are moving in that direction, according to Tuesday's survey.

I think it's a good platform if Musk doesn't alter it to 'serve' US security interests

I agree.

There is a varied range of people with more 'free speech', more videos available and also a lot of people in important positions who post regularly. Debate isnt as good but overall the best social media platform for news and updates.

Elon Musk plans to launch 'X Money' this year but only in a limited form

Elon Musk’s ambitious plan to transform X (formerly Twitter) into a comprehensive payments platform remains in progress, despite facing delays in regulatory approval. The initiative, now rebranded as ‘X Money’rather than its earlier name ‘X Payments’, continues to advance, albeit on a regional rather than nationwide scale.

Earlier this week, X CEO Linda Yaccarino signalled that X Money remains a priority for the company, describing it as one of several key launches planned for the coming months. In a New Year message, Yaccarino said the initiative aims to “connect you in ways never thought possible.”

While Musk initially targeted a 2024 launch, progress has been hindered by regulatory obstacles, particularly in New York State — a critical market for financial services.

License hurdles in New York

X has successfully secured money transmitter licences in 38 US states so far. However, its application in New York was withdrawn last year after facing legal opposition. The filing raised concerns about X’s “fitness and character” to manage financial services.

Central to these objections were allegations regarding X’s connections to Saudi Arabia , where ‘Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’ is an investor in Musk’s ventures. The legal filing claimed that Saudi Arabia’s “history of brutality and repression” had been “fueled and enabled” by the platform itself.

These concerns have slowed X’s ability to gain approvals in all US states, casting uncertainty over a national rollout.

Regional roll out plans

Despite these setbacks, signs suggest that X is moving forward with a regional launch strategy. Recent updates discovered in the app’s backend code reference the availability of ‘X Money in your state,’ indicating a more localised deployment plan.

This phased approach would allow X to start operations in approved states, potentially accelerating the project’s progress while addressing regulatory concerns elsewhere.

However, the limited availability of X Money could restrict its adoption, and international expansion remains a distant prospect. Musk’s divisive political stances are also expected to pose additional challenges in securing international licences.

While hurdles remain, a regional rollout could provide X with a crucial foothold in the payments sector. Whether Musk’s broader vision for X — as a platform combining social media, financial transactions, and other integrated services — will materialise remains to be seen.

For now, the focus is on navigating regulatory landscapes and proving the viability of X Money in select US markets.

Musk thinks that freedom of speech means saying whatever comes to your mind even if it hurts others' sentiments or leads to violence. There's so much freedom that even the Afghan Taliban are officially using X now.

Absolute Anarchy but its fun, like the old world wide web no restrictions at all.

thats exactly what freedom of speech is.

i dont agree with half of what he says, but as far as i can tell he hasnt censored anyone, including people who ridicule him on the platform.

twitter is also a much better barometer of public sentiment in the English speaking world than the legacy media, which is totally dominated by left wing narratives.

theres a space for the right and the left, eventually it would be nice if there is an uncensored platform of both the right and left, but i doubt it.

He is powerful now. Way too powerful. He can influence politics of any country he wants. Its like a huge megaphone for him. With great power comes great responsibility. Till now Musk has been raising his voice for all the right concerns.

@Slim bhai you have my sympathy for all the continuous grooming messages Musk is keeping on posting from one week.

While that’s true but I actually realise how less of a filter there is, I do think though Twitter is becoming more right.

The problem with twitter is a tweet doesn’t necessarily create a discourse on a topic which for example a forum does.

My respect for reddit is way more than X meta etc..

X is banned in Pakistan so it must be a force f anarchy for this corrupt regime. LOL

Yup changed the focus though.
Kinda crazy how this one seemed super manufactured yet the Musk army was propagating it super hard.

I found it funny how the usual legit right was super quiet this whole time and it was the Musk bots leading the charge.

Goes on to show how much influence Musk has on social media. This inorganic push by him definitely diverted the attention and i only see bits and pieces of it.

Musk is only true friend to Jews tho, indians shouldnt forget that behind all the anti india racism it was Musk since the past one and a half year. Those who know, they know.

He is buddy to no one but himself.
My point is Indians were flavor of the month, they basically want right wing governments in UK Canada EU Aus so many more groups to be targeted soon.

I already saw Arab ones being propagated now.

I will be honest with you, i have been observing anti Indian racism consistently since 2022/2023 after the twitter buyout.

Maybe Musk hated the previous twitter indian team, maybe from tesla. Maybe hes a racist dipshittt, which btw he definitely is. A hateful pathetic little troll.

And yes you are right about the flavour aspect. The conversation keeps on pinging around from Canada to Germany to USA to UK to idk what next and the main target are immigrants. Brown and black.

Different platforms have different methods of interaction. Twitter is more useful for breaking news, lack of censorship, and quickly gauging right-wing sentiment. It is also the fastest platform; no other platform moves as fast as it does.

Reddit is so heavily moderated that any views that oppose the political leanings of the subreddit are essentially removed or downvoted into oblivion. I'm banned from a few subreddits for saying fairly tame stuff. I probably spend more time on Reddit, but I follow certain news channels, certain sales channels, etc., on Twitter, for which there is no equivalent on Reddit.

he doesnt understand british politics, an outsider doing that would have the opposite effect on British politics, especially an American. furthermore his support for tommy robinson was a bit of an own goal with farage saying theirs no space for robinson in reform, farage cant tolerate another personality in his party, and tommy would split reform into two parties, one of disaffected torys and genuinely xenophobic bnp types trying to camouflage themselves in mainstream politics.

I think X has been a bit anarchic ever since Musk took over.

There should be a balance between freedom of speech and order.

Also, I don't know why Twitter's name was changed. X doesn't sound professional. The name "Twitter" was just fine.

He knows his audience and he's trying to tap into disaffected white population sentiment by giving them someone to blame for their own loss of relevance. Ironically he would be the first one to outsource all the local jobs if it made him money if he was in Britain himself.

Its good that Elon is pointing out the stuff that goes on around the world. Somebody had to shine light on those things. Elon with his huge Social Media reach "X", is doing the world a favor.

Its funny that Brits point out how bad law and order is in India, but they let daylight debauchery in their own land and do nothing about it.

Brits are like the rest of the western world, they have tried to follow the path of unrestrained freedom and profits, which to be fair, has produced much progress, but at the same time it has also led to degeneracy and loss of many traditional values which were the backbone of their society.

Agree.

I think western world started to decline the moment they embraced unchecked liberalism.

There is a middle path, and good societies will come to those conclusions, America is already getting conservative on certain subjects but advanced on others. The tiktok generation critic is pretty huge in US right now and rightly so.

Unlike Canada that considers itself morally superior due to its Liberalism , US doesn’t because there is still genuine conservative values which are modernising in a good way.

Texas is hated across but yet so many people keep moving here because it’s a very good place to grow a family and culturally diverse as well from East Asians to South Asians, Houston has some of the best Pakistani entrepreneurs and Dallas some of the best Indian and Nepali ones.

The major problem with UK is that it’s small and yet has double the population of Canada which is a huge country, resources are the problem , they can only recycle them for future generation not use new resources within country like Aus Canada US can.

My critic will only be towards Canada, for a country with highest per capita resource it really does a poor job of having a great map for future generations.

I used to think that as well but i do think there is an echo chamber effect going on in politics everyone just wants their biases to be right, so a South African Canadian American sounds more honest to the right wing extreme than say a Centrist in their own country.

I do think Liberals have taken it too far with their morally superior attitude that of Trudeau who failed to understand any conservative voice in his country from truckers to miners, these people are now tech savy and want to be heard and they are finding leaders in weird corners as they cannot articulate.

I have to say Guardian and NYtimes since covid have been the most disappointing left leaning media houses that had a duty to highlight the issues of these sections of society but instead focused on pushing their agenda.

agree with u, liberalism has become all about identity politics, political correctness and censorship, wheres the new right is all about xenophobia, reactionary politics and populism. mainstream politics is an absolute joke. dont think the level of respect for world leaders has ever been lower.

i disagree, the political class may have done so, but in the process they have sold off this country. apart from james dyson and a handful of other business people i cant think of any business leaders in this country who can compete or lay claim to having any globally relevant business enterprise. this country has no entrepreneurial spirit left, and the government is set up to squeeze any reward, which makes the risk not worth it. just part your money in passive income generating assets and hope for the best.

this country has always been socialist, and that's not a bad thing, but going from an industrial powerhouse, to an supporting act, to having virtually no industry of note left has destroyed what was a country of engineers. this country still has ground breaking cutting edge research and development in unis, but its all monetised abroad. whilst i wont argue that traditional values of industry, diligence, social conervatism, etc have not been lost, i disagree that they were sold for profit, they were given up for free because it was the path of least resistance for inept politicians to get easy wins at the polls.

Linda Yaccarino, CEO of Elon Musk's X, to step down in surprise move

Elon Musk-owned social platform X's CEO Linda Yaccarino said on Wednesday she would step down from the role in a surprise move.

Her exit comes at a difficult time for Musk, who is dealing with falling sales at his EV maker Tesla and is embroiled in a war of words with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Yaccarino did not give a specific reason for her decision. X and Yaccarino did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

She took the top job in 2023 to help Musk transform the company after he bought it in a $44 billion deal.

Prior to becoming the CEO of X, Yaccarino spent several years modernizing the ad business of Comcast's NBCUniversal.

The social media platform is dealing with a heavy debt load, and Yaccarino has had to often deal with controversies stirred up by Musk, including his endorsement of antisemitic conspiracy theories in late 2023.

Musk says X outcry is 'excuse for censorship'

Elon Musk has said that critics of his social media site X are looking for "any excuse for censorship", amid reports that X's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok was creating non-consensual sexualised images of people, including children.

Ofcom says it is conducting an urgent assessment of X in response, which has been backed by Technology Secretary Liz Kendall.

She described the sexual manipulation of images of women and children as "despicable and abhorrent", adding that she would expect to see an update from Ofcom in "days".

X has now limited the use of AI image function to those who pay a monthly fee, a change dubbed by Downing Street as "insulting" to victims of sexual violence.

The BBC has seen several examples of the free AI tool undressing women and putting them in sexual situations without their consent.

Ashley St Clair, the mother of one of Elon Musk's children, told BBC Newshour that Grok had generated sexualised photos of her as a child.

The conservative influencer said her image had been "stripped" to appear "basically nude, bent over", despite her telling Grok that she did not consent to the sexualised images.

St Clair, who filed a lawsuit against Musk last year seeking sole custody of their child, accused the social media site of "not taking enough action" to tackle illegal content, including child sexual abuse imagery. "This could be stopped with a singular message to an engineer," she said.

As of Friday morning, Grok was telling users asking it to alter images uploaded to X that "image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers", adding users "can subscribe to unlock these features".

An Ofcom spokesperson said: "We urgently made contact [with X] on Monday and set a firm deadline of today [Friday] to explain themselves, to which we have received a response."

"We're now undertaking an expedited assessment as a matter of urgency and will provide further updates shortly."

Ofcom's powers under the Online Safety Act include being able to seek a court order to prevent third parties from helping X raise money or be accessed in the UK - should the firm refuse to comply.

Kendall has said that Ofcom will have the government's full support if it makes the decision to block X in the UK.

The use of Grok to generate non-consensual sexualised images has been condemned by politicians on all sides:

  • Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling it "disgraceful" and "disgusting"
  • Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said it was "horrible in every way" and that X "needs to go further" than the changes it had made to Grok on Friday, but he added that banning the platform would be an attack on free speech
  • The Liberal Democrats called for access to X to be temporarily restricted in the UK while the social media site was investigated.
