Is GIS A Good Field?

I am about to get enrolled in a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) graduate program. I have the opportunity to earn a Master's Degree in GIS Applications.

Does anyone here have idea about GIS? Does it have good demand? I would love to see some comments/suggestions. Thanks.

Cant you do that with Masters in CS? Are you specificities in love with that field?

I used to work in engineering consulting and we had some GIS folks but it was a small team even though the company I worked for was massive. GIS seems like a highly specialized field with not many job opportunities, but that would also mean if you do land a job it will pay fairly well. However, weren't you doing software?


My career advice would be to pick one field and be good at it rather than knowing a little bit of everything

I can't do Master's in CS because I don't have bachelor's in CS.

I am basically a BComm (Bachelor of Commerce) graduate with a 2-year diploma in computer programming.

Doesn't GIS have programming in it? I read that Python is used with GIS.

I'll agree with syed1 here. It seems like you are jumping from one field to another.

Correct me if I am wrong. You are enrolled in graduate program and then comes the masters. So it's about 5 years that you will study in a very specialized field.

Seems like a lot of risk. There will be age limitations for applying jobs. So you'll have to also watch for that especially if you want the job in desi countries.
