Grant Flower was the favourite for the role of batting coach and today his announcement was greeted by a variety of responses, from appreciation of the decision by the PCB to disappointment.

Do you think he's the right choice as batting coach?

I don't think so. Not to disregard the pak team, I think a lot of his messages would get lost in translation between him, waqar and the players. I think what pak team needs is a pak mental conditioning coach who can make them mentally tough and instill belief. Going by Asim Kamal's interview I don't see why he won't fit the bill.

He is a good choice , not excellent

Jammie Siddeons , Sturat law , John Wright , Steve Waugh , rahul dravid would have been excellent

No, Inzi would have been a much better choice. Player with batting average of Hafeez will not help the cause.

We have to be realistic in whats available to us. The top coaches will most likely not want to work with Pakistan. No point selecting Inzi if he cant work full time, plus he should wait for the current batch of seniors to retire ( yk, afridi, misbah). All the other pakistanis would just cause more trouble or are too old

Hence i reckon Grant Flower is quite a good choice ( we should not forget his county experience)

Only other person i would have wanted would have been trent woodhil, i hear a lot of good things about him, but he has a comfortable IPL job and a young family

You do bring up a lot of names every time there is a talk about coaches, but you got to understand that not everyone want to become a coach for Pakistan. I doubt any of those names even applied. And not every foreign coach is a coach or tactician as you seem to imply many times.

how can we tell until we have some sense of his coaching qualifications and track record?

I think he could be a very good choice for any other country, unfortunately barring PAK (I am among the few voting No here). Grant Flower had been International cricketer for best part of 2 decades, played County for almost a decade, had his pro-coaching license completed in UK, started coaching in UK at lower capacity, then promoted to National level, albeit Zimbabwe & now finally after about 5 years of coaching in multiple capacity, has got the opportunity to work with a top side. Moreover, he is in the right age bracket - for someone aware of the changes of modern cricket game & the high-tech environment of modern day sports. & I am sure he is hungry enough to establish himself as a coach. Unfortunately, I fear Grant 'll be a failure in PAK, for the extreme ego of PAK players & constant animosity of the PAK retired cricketers, failing to get his post. I am not surprised to see that majority of the posters are questioning his batting credentials - imagine what 'll happen when Grant 'll try put his process & ideas (read authority) on players like Afridi, Umar, Hafeez or Shehzad (actually anybody barring YK & Misbah).

One of Shethi's 10 points was managing the vaunted ego of almost illiterate PAK players & Grant 'll feel the pinch of that badly. I think, "Not so great" players like Buchanan, Fletcher, Ford, Whatmore, Farbrace could work successfully with some of the best batsmen ever, but in PAK most 'll raise questions on what was GF's batting capability. With due respect to John Wright & Gary Kristen's batting capability, they coached the likes of Tendulker, Dravid, VVS, Ganguly, Shewag & MSD for almost a decade, but I am sure, Grant 'll feel hopeless, answering his Test average (to justify coaching the likes of Hafeezs & Afridis), time & again. I think, PCB should look to hire the likes of Imran, Sobers, Gavasker, Tendulker, Viv, Lille or Hadlee for coaching job, otherwise, there are not many left to justify appointment with their career stats for these great generation of PAK batsmen. I mean, Sir Alex, Arsene Wenger or Jose Mourinho can control the MU, Arsenal or Chesea boot room, but unless you are a Viv Richards or Brian Lara, your appointment as batting coach 'll always be challenged in PAK.

Grant flower 'll start to feel the hit from day one, from some of the worst attitude players, incompetent board, unprofessional media, egoistic (& opportunist) retired bunch & his bosses (Waquar & Moin). However, as long as Misbah is Captain, I believe he 'll be backed, for that, I feel Misbah is the only person with some professionalism in entire PAK cricket set up (so, till WC, GF should be there). After C '15, I am not so sure. However, if I were in charge, probably 'll pick both Inzi & Miandad for my best playing XI, but not as my club team's coach. & I used almost the same lines when Zaheer was appointed (Just replace Grant Flower with Trent Woodhill) as batting "Guru".

Grant was the possible best choice, because, there is no professionally competent Coach in PAK (read subcontinent) & I don't think the likes of Greg Chappel, Siddons, Law, Gooch, Marsh, Dean Jones or Langer would ever apply to work under an all time great fast bowler, turned head coach, Waquar Younus.

But, I still 'll vote "NO", because, it's not by chance that PAK ends up with Captains like Afridi, MoYo or Hafeez, & coaches like Mohsin, Moin or M. Akram.

Almost a year and a half now.

Personally i think its a decent enough time period to make some judgements on his performance and effect. So has he been successful in making a positive impact?

I think while our test batting has been very good but it can be debated how much influence he has had over that given that our test line up has been stable for a while.

The real concerns are in ODI and T-20 cricket and i see no progress at all in the last 18 months.

i think he has done a fantastic job but i think a pakistani batting coach would be more suitable because he can only understand pakistani mentality , test line up is stable so its easy to work with them , while one day and t-20 side keeps changing which selectors are doing bad so its difficult for anyone.

Which pakistani batting coach? Who do you want?

Two and a half years in the job. Pretty long time. No doubt his work ethic is exemplary and that he has put the hard yards in. But it wont be a bad idea for a change now. Inzi instead of being the chief selector should be looking to take up this role now. The team might respond better to a Pakistani batting legend as oppossed to a foreigner.

It depends on who the other applicants are. I think we need better under 19 coaches and some green wickets to perfect the technique against the bouncing and moving ball. Until that happens no coach is gonna succeed for the international team. You can't teach a 24 yo to suddenly learn to play the moving ball.

Neither Mickey or Flower's fault. People have to understand that this is a very limited batting lineup, essentially 5 Misbah clones. You can't teach them to put away the bad ball if they're not physically capable.

A batting coach can only do so much.

If batsmen have glaring flaws and the board is not prepared to allow for proper preparation ahead of a series then there will only be one outcome.

not to blame Flower for everything that's gone wrong with the Pakistani batting lately, because there are a lot of issues with the top 6 our of Flower's control

but Flower has been at his position for a while, that there really haven't been any noticeable improvements in performance or style. If anything, guys like Asad and Azhar have regressed, and Sami hasn't progressed as expected
