I know he is young infact very young but this boy has something in him. Like Aslam he has got the temperament and discipline to score big in test cricket.
I know its too early to blood him against india but certainly this boy with Pak origin has a bright future ahead of him.

Potentially but not at this time Its way too early for him to be a contender for the eng middle order

Title needs changing to 'opening problems'. He's a young talented opener who's done very well for Lancs in the first division this season. Could be a good partner for Cook.

He would bore people to death. England should be looking at Daniel Bell-Drummond.

Not a good idea to give a debut to player on alien conditions like india

England should either stick with hales or Move moeen ali to the opening slot
Scot borthwick and zafar ansri should be in the squad in place of james vince and ballance

Talented player, must keep his head down and keep grafting! 930 runs so far in the Championship.

So we have Yorkshire Captain who has witnessed rise of young players like Lyth, Root etc talking him up

and we have him beating County records set by 'FEC' Atherton

Englands talent in reserve is looking immense with likes of Bell Drummond etc also

England threw Root in at the deep end on a tour to India after his breakthrough season at Yorks in 2012. There were many of the same objections raised in Root's case in that he had a low strike rate, would struggle to defend against the spinners, failure would scar him psychologically etc. Throwing in a young player at the deep end does occasionally tend to pay rich dividends especially if the youngster has displayed signs of being mature psychologically. Think players such as Root, Tendulkar & Graeme Smith who all took to international cricket like a fish to water. Unfortunately, for every Root, Tendulkar & Graeme Smith there are more than a few cases such as Steve Smith, Steve Waugh & Kallis in that those guys took a long time to establish themselves at the top. It is relevant to note that the common thread linking all six of those players is their mental fortitude.

It's not necessarily technique or ability, although that helps of course, but how a youngster is mentally adept at performing at the highest level. We have countless cases of a player looking a million dollars at first class cricket but blinking when put under pressure or disintegrating after facing failure at international cricket. People like Ashley Giles would be best equipped to know whether Hameed has that special spark to succeed internationally, just like Jason Gillespie predicted Root's success before the last Indian tour. One of the things that stood out about Root on the last tour was how comfortable he was with his teammates and the infectious confidence that he displayed which prompted Andy Flower to select him for the final test. However, even if the coaches think a youngster is ready there is really no guarantee about these things and you can never really know for certain before a player actually does metaphorically sink or swim. Obviously not all young players respond similarly to pressure and it's unfair to assume every young cricketer should have Root's unflappable temperament. Nonetheless, I'd personally select Hameed for the touring party and see how he copes with being part of that environment.

I feel he will go. Cook almost hinted as much. Bayliss said the guys have a month to score runs. If he does he will be on the trip.

He is very good but still extremely young. However, we must remember Root and Cook both started young and many greats in history have started young so he could do well. He should go with the team even if he doesn't play in Winter.

The numbers he's putting up are staggering.

Is he British Pakistani? Because his name to me sounds very Pakistani esque

England coach Trevor Bayliss prepared to throw teenager Haseeb Hameed in at deep end this winter

Trevor Bayliss, the England coach, has said he will have no problem picking a teenager to open the batting with Alastair Cook in Test cricket this winter.

“If he’s good enough, he’s old enough. No, I wouldn’t have any problem,” he said when asked if Haseeb Hameed, Lancashire’s 19 year-old batsman, is old enough for Test cricket at the age of 19.

Bayliss, one of four England selectors, will sit down next week to pick the squad for the Test series in Bangladesh and India with only a couple of positions still to be determined.

“There have been some young players making some runs who are coming into calculations which is very exciting. That’s obviously one of the talking points around the selection table,” he said. “They (other selectors) are probably like me, doodling and picking teams. I think in my mind I’m reasonably close. There are one or two positions in a squad of 16 that could go either way.”

Telegraph Sport reported last week that Hameed is set to go on tour and Andrew Strauss, the team director, as well as James Whitaker, the chairman of selectors, watched him make 56 for Lancashire against Somerset at Old Trafford in the last round of championship games as they cast around for answers to the team’s top order problems.

If Hameed is picked in the squad and replaces Alex Hales for the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong on Oct 20 he will be the youngest Test debutant for England since Ben Hollioake in 1997.

Hameed was only seven months old when Hollioake played an Ashes Test at Trent Bridge aged 19 years 269 days with the Surrey allrounder himself the youngest player to be picked for England since Brian Close in 1949.

Hameed will be aged 19 years and 277 days when the first Test of the winter starts which would make him only the sixth teenager to play Test cricket for England.

Lancashire do not have a game this week and with the selectors likely to meet early next week, Hameed’s selection has probably already been decided.

Hameed looks like a classy batsman. This guy will score big against India as well. He looked good against Pace, hope he can play spin as well, don't want another Khwaja.

Have heard alot of positive stuff about this kid and also that he'll be on the plane to Bangladesh and India.

Got to be worth a go - all of the other openers have been so rubbish for so long (except Cook recently) that there will surely be some kind of an overall improvement by picking Hameed.

Scored a fifty in the warmup match.

He's a stodgy, 80s-style opener who'll blunt the new ball from some accounts.

However his Test debut in this series will be the world's first proper look at this young talent who's been magnificent for Lancashire this season.

Has been showing a great temperament in his first class career.

Seems to be difficult to get out, so alongside Cook England could have a very solid opening pair.

Going to be a shootout between Ballance and Hameed for a place in the first test.

Although I want to see him play for England, I still think Duckett is the more deserving and appropriate selection.

Hameed will be in the mix in the near future and for a long time, maybe just not now

Personally think they should both play at the expense of Ballance. If Ballance has to play though then yes, Duckett deserves the spot.

Haseeb Hameed to make England debut in first Test

Teenage opener Haseeb Hameed will make his England debut against India in the opening Test in Rajkot on Wednesday.

The match will go ahead despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India threatening to cancel the match over a financial dispute with the courts.

Lancashire batsman Hameed, 19, will become only the second teenager to play Test cricket for England since 1949.

Ben Duckett, who opened in the recent Test series against Bangladesh, will replace Gary Ballance at four.

"We have all been hugely impressed with the way Haseeb has gone about his business on this tour. Nothing seems to faze him," said captain Alastair Cook.

Hameed, who scored 1,129 runs at an average of 52 in County Championship Division One this summer, was called up for the Test tour of Bangladesh in October but did not play in the 1-1 series draw.

All-rounder Ben Hollioake, who was 19 when he played against Australia in 1997, is the only other teenager to appear in a Test for England since 18-year-old Brian Close made his debut in 1949.

Left-hander Ballance, 26, has been dropped after scoring only 24 runs in four innings in Bangladesh.

"I feel sorry for Gary," said Cook. "They were tough conditions in Bangladesh and ultimately it's about how many runs you score.

"I still think he's a fine player and one who I think will play again for England and do well."

they have a weak middle order so they can fit him there

Good riddance to Ballance, hope the kid does well :19:

Shukaray. Ballance out.
Even though it means duckett wont be able to get quick runs at the top of the knock

Good decision.

Ballance has shown he can't handle spin on rank turners.

Haseeb making his debut in the motherland what an occasion for the young lad. Wish him all the best.

Not just the motherland - they are playing in Rajkot, which is in Gujarat. State his ancestors are from. Must be nice for the family.

yeah it will add extra emotion to the occasion for the family. Zahid87

Should have debuted a match earlier. Read good things about him, apparently he is the second coming of Boycott (sans the selfishness) and one who puts a great value on his wicket. Will be a tough test for him, but is always special to make your debut where your roots lie.

Is the first Lancastrian opener after Atherton to debut for England. As a fellow Lancastrian, Junaids must be chuffed*.

*provided he manages to catch a bit of the series in the spare time he has when he isn't creating threads pushing for Asif and Butt's selection in Australia.

Hasseb will play his first test for England tomorrow

Good. Should have played in Bangladesh too. Ballance makes way. I would put Hasseb in at #3 and move Root back down to his best position at #4.

4 pakistanis in the line up against India with Ansari and Ali probably the most helpful in foreign conditions

The guy played well. Excellent start from youngster. I was just reading commentary on cricinfo and read what Root said. He said that it was his fault for DRS taken by Haseeb. I think that's the way you protect your youngsters from media and other pressures. Excellent from Root !

Looked very assured in defence and confident in stroke making. Was slightly shaky at the start which was understandable considering it was his debut but looked like the senior among the two when him and Cook were batting. Baby Boycs has a bright future ahead. Too bad he isn't a Yorkshireman.:yk

It was Root who prompted him to review.

Fantastic talent. Him and Sami Aslam will be the best openers of the next generation.

four british asians in the lineup now. Excellent for our community.

Especially for the British Muslims. This English team can bridge a lot of gaps between different groups within English society.

Good to finally see a British Indian playing for Britian after a while. Good luck to Haseeb. Don't go the Ravi or Montys way Hasseb. Make us proud!

Could be the next Cook. Very organized and classical, looks like a proper Test opener.

Indeed, it might be cliche to say this but the talent has always been there! especially in me city. What we have lacked is role models and there has been a general scepticism due to the public school culture. The ECB have also failed to scout talent in the past and many promising youths had fallen astray given a lack of support, there is a better system in place now and with guys like Mo out there we'll see more British Asians play for England in the future.

It also reflects the open-minded nature of the British society. You get bigots everywhere but in general, compared to other countries, the UK is easily the most progressive and tolerant country. As long as you are good enough and are prepared to work hard, you will get a chance.

I know so many people in the UK and as well as based on my own experiences over the years, it is probably the least racist country around but I haven't been exposed to Canada yet and don't have Canadian Pakistanis in my family and social circle so can't really comment on that.

Temperament look excellent and hes got quite a few shots in his book and most of all he knows when to play them and when not to.. his Technic will be really tested against high quality spin though.

Rajkot: Nineteen-year-old opener Haseeb Hameed had a special audience here on Saturday when he scored his maiden half century for England in his debut Test.

His family — father Ismail, mother Najma, elder brother Nuaman, younger brother Safwaan, sisters Ateqah and Subhana — watched as the most famous member of their family was applauded when he steered India leg-spinner Amit Mishra for a boundary.

Hameed ended the day unbeaten on 62 with captain Alastair Cook at the other end. His family found it difficult walking to their car as spectators broke security barriers to wish them for their boy's success.

Hameed's Test debut against India here is an even bigger occasion for the family as his ancestors come from the village Umraj in Bharuch some 373 km away from Rajkot. The family is in India for Nuaman's nikaah with Nadiya, which was conducted in Bharuch last week. But Haseeb was not part of it because he had to be with the team ahead of a crucial series.

"Haseeb couldn't attend it as he was with the team. But it is ok, we all understand," said his elder sister Ateqah. "I am very happy, I couldn't have asked for more," is all that his father could say, still basking in the glory of his son's achievement.

"But, (pointing at Safwaan) he was a much better cricketer than Haseeb. He was to go to Australia but had to stop playing because of injuries," added the father who used to make Nuaman and Safwaan play cricket in the living room with a plastic ball and bat. Like all Asian expats, they loved cricket and cricketers. Former Pakistan cricketer Salim Malik would often drop in at their residence in Bolton.

"He is calm, very level-headed and a very good observer," said Safwaan of his brother. This is one quality that has been praised by England captain Alastair Cook.

Teammate Adil Rashid said: "He has got a good head. He is very clever and works hard in the nets. He has also got a very good sense of humour and I think he is fitting well in the dressing room. He is a great talent and he showed that today. Hopefully, he carries on tomorrow and makes a big one here."

Lancashire Cricket Club can confirm that the 2019 season will be Haseeb Hameed’s final year, after the Club decided not to renew the batsman’s contract, which concludes at the end of the current campaign.

The Club met with Haseeb on Friday and explained its decision, and the 22 year-old is now free to discuss opportunities with other Counties.

The Club would like to thank Haseeb for all of his commitment and efforts since he made his first class debut in the 2015 season, having come through the Academy.

This is so sad.

I hope Haseeb gets a job at another CCC and thrives there. How England need an opener of his temperament.
