Is Hashim Amla's recent form in Test cricket a worry for South Africa?

Hashim Amla has been without a doubt a quality batsmen over the years for South Africa. However his form in test cricket for a couple of years now has been pretty average.Cast your mind back to 2015 where he was terrible against India. Recent tours to Australia and New Zealand have been terrible not getting a half century and he also had a pretty ordinary series against sri lanka bar that 1 century in his 100th test match. It begs the question if he doesnt perform against England should he dropped?

recent retirements of Kallis n Smith. AB running away n Steyn being always injured.

Has meant that Amla is one of the few veterans left in the team. Its unfortunate his decline has coincided with these abscences.

He can't retire as that would leave SA with too much new blood.

Amla will retire within the next 2 years i feel. Possibly after the 2019 WC.

There's no replacement for him. His form is a worry. I don't think he's the same player he once was .

he will perform. Tough patch come to any player. He is not like hafeez etc He is selected on merit.

His average has dipped below 50 now.

Sick and tired of this really, one bad game and Hashim's form is questioned. He is not a machine for heavens sake.

His last few ODI scores are 35, 16, 103, 55, 24, 73.

He had an excellent IPL

Yes, in test matches he has scores just one fifty and on century in his last 14 innings, which is a bit of a concern but I'm sure he will hit form in tests as well.

His last few Test Scores are 11, 29, 19, 50, 38*, 21, 24, 1, 134, 0, 29, 48, 20, 45

Bad by his standards but not 'terrible' enough to drop him.

Did well in one Test but then failed in the next - He can't seem to be able to string together a few matches of good performances.

Roland-Jones has his number also, it appears.

he's trying too much. he's trying to score runs as much as possible before getting out.

He's out of form. Never write world-class players off. He'll come good again, maybe today.

Of course. The dude just doesn't know when to hang up his boots. Looking atrocious by the day and an absolute liability on the team.

Two big holes they where never able to fill . Smith was such an underrated batsmen , arguably the best Test opener in recent times .
The likes of AB and Amla have been a big let down , now a lot depends on how Elgars career shapes up who seems to be quality

jusarrived whatever people say about Amla guy never shirked his responsibilities and at least hes on the pitch trying. AB has been much more of a disgrace.

Amla playing like a Champion.

Finally he seems to be in his comfort zone. Hope he scores a big hundred. Come on Saffers.

I agree , would never question his commitment .

I was pointing out how good a player Smith was , not the most talented , but has had the biggest impact for SA in recent years . very Underrated imo

He is answering with in style. Hope he makes this a big one. :amla

Hashim Amla has been South Africa's best batsman this series, and the best top-order batsman for either side. He's no longer the invincible, cyborg that he was during 2010-2014 but he's still doing a decent enough job.

Oh Amla, what have you done? He's missed out on a century yet again this series.

Not that good. Like Cook, he was vulnerable against quality pace bowling which is not what you want from your opener.

Still averaged 50 and has played some of the most memorable knocks from a SA player . In the end thats what matters . A lot of players who seemingly have good technique still fail against quality players . Kallis who was technician has failed against good swing/bounce as much as Smith .

I beg to differ.

He is 34 years old and has lost the consistency to pass 35 in 75% of his innings, which is the main requirement for batters in the Top Five.

He will keep his average up by going Big occasionally, but like Misbah and Younis his age-related inability to contribute in most innings will cause endless defeats.

And worse, for quota reasons they won't drop him.
