Is India the weakest "Number 1 Test team" in history?

Now that we have world Test championship, rankings will become meaningless.

As for the OP goes, no it was Pakistan. They were whitewashed in Aus, SA and NZ around the time when they were #1, and that has to be the lowest point in the history of Test cricket. But Kohli's team is also average. He has to win at-least 3 out of 4 series in Eng/Sa/Aus/Nz.

32 wins in 51 games. yea no. kohli's team is one of the best of all time. easy top 4.

Need to win a few more away series. Theyve won just 1 against an unsettled Aussies. Next aussie tour will be real test.
This side is very capable i agree

Few things one has to note have changed

Unlike prior to 2010 , teams and players have less time to acclimatize as players don’t play enough Practise matches - I remember in the 90s there used to be two or three tour games before actual match - Now players are playing more ipl brand and less 5 day .. shows how players like PUJARA and Agarwal are an asset but rarity .

In this era I think how dominant u are at home needs to be considered too . Gone are days where u will win everywhere - just not enuf time I believe for pretour prep ( most teams have this issue )

India gotta win in NZ otherwise this ain't India's best ever team alone. Indian team of 2007-11 won in England, New Zealand, drew in South Africa against a good SA team and should have won or drew in Australia 2007 as well if not for the two B's who costed India the Sydney test. They also win in 2006 Windies.

The only team they lost away was to Sri Lanka who had A Mendis.

I think this is like Tennis Sets...! When you are serving (playing at your home), you will have the advantage and most likely to win that game! On the other hand when you are facing a serve (playing outside), then the opponent will have all the advantage & come hard at you! So its all about how well you defend while defending and how well you attack while attacking! So you should not confuse this to "How well you counter-attack even when the opponent is serving at you!" It doesn't work out that way!

So its about playing a bit of waiting game, defensive approach, safety first way... Of course when you get a chance to sneak through then make the most of it... You got to give respect to the opponent & their playing conditions...

Even the great Australian side of 90s & 00s found it difficult to win in India and Sri Lanka... (But they eventually were able to win... So you have to give time for India as well). And when West Indies used to dominate back then most teams were at minnow level, they were even not aware of the concept called "Home Advantage"!

But we have to accept that India could do much better if they get rid of stupidities - stupid selections, stupid captaincy & stupid coaching....
