Just reading the thread about the bomb in the Canadian restaurant and saw this comment:

Its far worse in the prairies and west..specially if you go to remote locations in Canada, you will see racism.

So I was thinking pretty much the same in the US and UK as well, go outside the big cities and the rural areas are probably going to be more racist, or at least more wary of change. So got me thinking, is it a bad thing to want to preserve old ways and culture, because when you get large scale immigration, definitely it is going to change the face of the area over a period of time.

No I do not think so. It can take a form of racism if you stop others from living by their culture. Propagate your own culture without condemning others. If it's okay with the law of the country it's okay with me.

Racism in an established multicultural environment like Canada and UK happens when the local culture feels threatened by the cultures foreign to the land. Just to be clear, the point I am making is only for established places where multiple cultures exist harmoniously for a while (and where the local culture is still dominant), not when there a small village sees its first asian family and acts racist out of ignorance.

You get racist attacks in these cultures when the local culture feels threatened. The only way to ensure that the local culture does not feel so is by ensuring complete integration of the immigrants. The immigrants should have the freedom to keep their religion, culinary habits etc. But on the matter of law of land etc the local culture needs to prevail. For example, homosexuality is not illegal in the UK. All immigrants need to understand that any intolerance towards homosexuals will not be tolerated in the country.

So instead of leaving the immigrants to themselves, they should be required to positively integrate. Even in London you get asian ghettos where the asians kids growing up rarely know any white kid during their childhood, stunting the process of integration, leading to racism from both sides. I blame the government for this for allowing this to happen rather than having a plan for long term integration.

All those asians who have settled in the UK, left South Asia due to issues such as lack of opportunities, better lifestyle etc. which are all a product of the local culture. Why bring those ills in the new society. The reason Europe has been able to advance has been due to the adoption of their culture.

Are you speaking from any experience? If so, where? Personally I have seen that the rural areas mentioned in the OP generally are a lot more wary of outsiders, the bigger cities tend to have got past all that a long time ago, although you could definitely say the culture has changed with the influx. But if you can give a personal insight of your own experience that would be helpful.

Oh man you are talking bjp language.some bjp netas or some rss wants to preserve hindustan culture which is local culture, against invader or western culture too.....
Why cannot humans just live and let live...we are only here for short time..

Backwards people with backwards mentality who want to assimilate new foreigners who seem to have the same morals as their backwards one so that they can educate the new generation of all communities while keeping it one hundred percent 2secular

My advice to all countries that want to protect their cultures:

- Stop colonizing, invading, and destabilizing other countries. Many Syrians would still be happy living in Syria pre the united states giving them "freedom".

- Start having more children amongst yourselves so you dont need to rely on immigration to keep your population, workforce, and economy sustained.

Man there might be some countries which i guess never have colonized or invaded or destabilized some otger countries yet their local culture to some extent changed or tried very hard to change all of that.
. I guess there might be some countries like that in the world. Tge point is humans should not be bounded to only one region or country.whole earth belongs to humans...otherwise it gets very complicated and you as my friend would surely have got my point what i wanted to convey..

Racism has a lot to do with a lack of interaction with people of other races. You will find hardly any racism in the Greater Toronto Area because every second person is a person of color so you are interacting with people from other races all the time and realize that you are more similar than different.

However, if you go to remote places in Quebec, Alberta etc you would find quite a bit of racism because the folks there may not even have seen a person of color in real life. That being said its not like all people in these remote places are racist.

Not entirely true, seen plenty of cases in recent times where people have lived all their life interacting with people from all walk of life but those who wants to be racist remain racist.

No one is born racist, they are grown into be one.

And it comes in many form, an example would be people of Sindh, Karachi and Punjabi.

Western nations need immigrant for various reasons and some western nations continue to need a boogeyman for various reasons, hence racism is created mainly for monetary reasons.

example would be domestic racism in US, created in the form of laws that would mostly target the African American community to fill up the private jails.

Let's look at it from another angle, does anybody live in a country which they feel has benefited from preserving their own culture by actively restricting immigration from other countries? Can you post your experiences here and give some reasons why you think it has worked?

I am writing this at a time when an SNP commission is proposing tax breaks to get immigrants to move to Scotland as the conclusion is that immigration needs to be increased to help drive the economy of a future independent Scotland.

‘Vulgar racism’: outrage after mural of Italian volleyball star is vandalised

A mural celebrating the Italian Olympic volleyball champion Paola Egonu has become the target of “vulgar racism” after the athlete’s skin in the image was spray-painted pink.

The mural by the street artist Laika was defaced within a day of being unveiled on a wall close to the headquarters of the Italian Olympic committee (Coni) in Rome.

The image featured Egonu, who spearheaded Italian women’s volleyball’s first-ever gold medal win at the Paris Olympics, as she jumps to hit a ball with the words “stop racism”. The words were also erased by the vandals, who are yet to be identified.

Egonu, 25, was born in Italy to Nigerian parents.

Called Italianità, the mural was also Laika’s response to a passage in a bestselling book by a controversial army general and MEP, Roberto Vannacci, in which he wrote that even though Egonu was “Italian by citizenship … her physical features” did not “represent Italianness”.

Vannacci, who was elected to the European parliament in May with the backing of Italy’s far-right Lega, reiterated his view on Sunday after Egonu emerged as the top scorer in the women’s volleyball final against the USA.

The defacing of the mural was widely condemned by politicians from across the spectrum.

Antonio Tajani, Italy’s deputy prime minister, said: “I want to express solidarity with Paola Egonu and the most total disdain for this serious gesture of vulgar racism.”

Elly Schlein, the leader of the opposition Democratic party, said: “Racism is disgusting and must be countered.” She vowed to continue her party’s fight for a change in law that would grant citizenship at birth to children born in Italy to foreign parents, regardless of their parents’ citizenship, thus bringing the country into line with other European states. At present, children born in Italy to foreign parents can only apply from the age of 18.

Roberto Gualtieri, the mayor of Rome, said the vandalism was “a vile insult to a great Italian, who has brought the colours of our country to the top of the world, and to an artist committed to fighting against xenophobia”.

Simone Giannelli, a member of the Italian men’s volleyball team, said the vandals were “heartless, without dignity and without humanity”.

In 2022, Egonu took a break from the national team after receiving racial abuse online following Italy’s defeat to Brazil in the world championship semi-finals. “Reading those things and hearing them made me doubt myself more. And the worst one was, ‘Is she Italian?’ I was devastated,” she later said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
