Former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Zaka Ashraf, while talking to Daily Express, spoke against organising the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season six in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The 68-year-old believed that the situation in Pakistan was now in control.
“The PSL should have been organised in Pakistan. The coronavirus situation seems to be in control now in the country. The shifting of the event will create problems in holding matches in Pakistan in the future,” Ashraf said.
The PSL season six was postponed after just 14 matches after the rise in coronavirus cases in Pakistan. The event was initially planned to resume from June 1 in Karachi and would have concluded on June 20. However, after the insistence of the franchises, successful efforts were made to move the event to Abu Dhabi.
The former chairman claimed that moving the event to the UAE was a wrong move and would affected international cricket’s return to Pakistan.
“This was a wrong move. The PSL should have been completed in Pakistan. Holding the event in the UAE will not be beneficial while causing harm to the process of the complete resumption of cricket in the country. Due to the efforts of the army, peace was restored in Pakistan and grounds once again hosted cricket matches. International teams were coming to Pakistan without any fear but now they might be more hesitant coming here on the future,” he said.
“The situation in Pakistan is not that bad. I don’t see why the matches could not be held here. Maybe, because of the last two failures in the bio-secure bubble, the management did not want to host the event here. They should hold the PSL in various cities of the country so that more people can enjoy the sport,” he concluded.
