Is Javed Miandad underrated?

His record is amazing in both test and odis but still somehow he is not considered in same bracket as Gavaskar, Lara, Richards, Sachin. His average is better than Gavaskar in both odis and test.
 
No he is not. He is very much rated by everyone. It is just that he does not make too many world X1's due to other players being better than him. If someone asks who is Pakistan's greatest test batter, everyone will say Javed. He is very popular and well respected. He was one of the best players in 80's. Gavaskar is rated higher because he was an opener in tests. No one rates Gavaskar as a ODI player.
 
Averages aren't the only things that matter. Miandad failed against WI but Gavaskar did very well against them, although he didn't face the full attack many times.
 
He is rated as Pakistan's best ever batsman. Not underrated at all.

He's not considered in the same bracket as Gavaskar, Lara, Richards and Sachin because he doesn't deserve to be in that bracket, he's below that. A magnificent player, world class, perhaps our best ever batsman, but he doesn't go toe to toe with the aforementioned quartet of GOAT candidates and is rightfully not rated as highly as them.
 
I think he is mostly over rated. Inzamam was better than him

Superb. Best pressure player I ever saw, ever better than Border. Best ever Asian batsman.
 
He is best ever batsman from Asia...

Even Tendulkar took advice from him often.

Gavaskar may be better in tests but overall there is no comparison Miandad is far far better..even Gavaskar knows it.Miandad was the most feared Asian batsman of his era.
A real fighter..how he pointed his bat at Lilee in his home ground was amazing.

The Indian Cricinfo might not recognize him but stats do not tell everything.

Let's be honest with ourselves here, Younis racked up half his runs against some of the worst bowling in cricket on dead UAE tracks and mostly against spinners, he was only successful in England and he only had 1 good innings last time he toured there.

I'm sure Miandad also has a similar record but he at least played in a bowlers era and managed to go good.

In short, Miandad is the best batsman Pakistan produced.

Miandad's overseas record is nothing to cry home about. He failed vs WI, and against Lillee, and was merely decent in England. The only great bowler against whom he did well was Hadlee.

Younis also scored runs in Aus and England against very good attacks. I would say this England attack is about equal to Botham-Willis, and in England conditions I would argue they are better. He has got decent runs against McG/Warne and Starc/Hazlewood/Lyon in Australia, both very formidable attacks.
 
One of the best ever batsmen from Asia and arguably the best from Pakistan.

Doesn't get in most world XIs because the spots are already filled with better batsmen.

In my (biased) opinion he is the best ever from SC behind Sunil Gavaskar.
 
People do rate him, and he will get into an Asian XI for sure -

The beast team in Miandad's days was West Indies. He failed to perform against them, scoring only at an average of 29.75. His career average is bolstered thanks to easy runs against New Zealand (average 80) and India (average 67).
 
I don't think so. He's rated as an ATG by nearly everyone who matters and rightfully so. He's a legendary batsman who's test batting average never fell below 50 at any point in his career.

I rank him just behind Sachin and Gavasker from the Asian batsmen.

It is a strange sight seeing Waqar competing for a spot with Ashwin of all people. One of the strangest things I've seen on this forum for sure.

Dhoni is redundant in this team and so is Kapil. A much better team would be this:

1) Gavasker
2) Dravid
3) Sangakkara (wk)
4) Sachin
5) Miandad
6) Younis
7) Imran (c)
8) Wasim
9) Waqar
10) Kumble
11) Murali

Only by youngsters.

To be fair, most top-order batsmen were mediocre against Lillee. He made Gooch look rubbish. He even caused Viv Richards problems.
 
He had potential to be among the very best considering the start he got. Still the best Pakistani batsman that i have seen in last 30 years.

They aren't, Sanga averages only 40 when he plays as a keeper, not a good enough #3 when he keeps.

Kapil is needed because the tail is too long otherwise, Asia doesn't have the luxury of having Kallis or Sobers in the team.

Ashwin is by all means a great bowler in SC and he contributes with the bat, if not Younis he can replace Kapil in SC.

Bowling standard those days were far far far greater than what we witness these days.

He would have averaged 60 plus in the modern era where even Misbah and Hafeez (post 2010) average 40 plus

Plus he batted at 4
Would have made so many centuries if he opened like Sachin,Lara did
 
He's rated highly, only one out of all Pak batsmen who could be legitimately argued as the best or one of the best of his era. From his era alone, both him and Gavaskar pretty much stood alone in terms of asian batsmen, no one really even rivaled them.

For the others, like Inzi, YK, Yousuf, while all very good, always had quite a few batsmen considered better than them playing at the same time e.g. Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Sangakaara, Dravid, Kallis, Waugh etc.

I'm not sure Miandad can be held to the same heights as Lara, viv or Ponting as he didn't do great against the best side of his time WI, or in Australia (though wasn't terrible, he was decent).

+1. If there is one cricketer who is underrated it's DK Lillee. Likes of Imran Khan and pace battery of WI were inspired by Lillee: A true alpha! :jm
 
I think the newer generation of Pakistan fans don't know much about Javed and his impact. Even kids who grew up in the later par of 90s have no clue. He was one of Pakistan's best match winners of all time.
 
I saw Miandad starting in 1992 when he was a shadow of himself. He was good at pinching singles and twos with his nudges and gentle pushes, but he was not a stroke maker and struggled to keep up with the evolving ODI game (he often had a SR under 70). He was tough as nails but quite boring to watch.

Can anyone who watched him play in his prime tell us about his stroke play? Was he more entertaining back then?
 
When it comes to bowlers, IK, Wasim and Waqar comes in my mind from Pakistan.

When it comes to batsmen, only Miandad comes in mind who could make a case to belong in similar category.

That's pretty high rating.

Miandad certainly doesn't belong in all time XIs due to failing against the best bowlers of his era, but most rate him very high. Miandad also makes into my list of top 5 Asian batsmen.

Mine would be -

Sachin / Sanga / Gavaskar / Dravid / Miandad in that order.
 
not by anyone I have interacted with.
but legacies can often be re-visited as more time passes.
 
People rate modern batsmen above many of the old greats such as Chappel, Greenidge, Haynes, Miandad, Zaheer or older ones (Hammond, Sobers etc) simply because they haven't seen those players play in their era.

I have seen Miandad play and he towered above most batsmen in his time. His impact was in some ways similar to Sehwag's - get into the mind of the opposition. His way was different though - singles, doubles, putting bad balls and some good balls away, mind games. He was feared by most oppositions. His away record against Australia and West Indies isn't great but he did play some memorable back to the wall innings (such as century in '88 against Marshall, Ambrose). Miandad's ability, talent and attitude were never in doubt. I do remember him being vulnerable against bounce early on in his innings but he was dogged enough to continue trying to improve himself till the very end. Hence some good scores.

I remember in the 80s, Minadad walking in inevitably at 15/2 or some such useless score when our openers were up against a half decent opposition - and then set about steering the innings time and time again. To get 50+ average going throughout his career means he did it well.

An all time great, certainly the best from Pakistan - miles above Younis, Inzamam, Yusuf - who are considered best only because people haven't lived through Miandad's batting and his hold over the opposition when he ruled the crease.

I have and I stand by his greatness.
 
Yes, because he isn't talked about while talking about all time XIs. But everyone agrees that he is greatest bat ever produced by Pakistan. So, he has his legacy fair and intact but doesn't get mentioned when we talk about all time probably because he failed against topmost teams.

Gavaskar and Dravid opening together is completely a negative strategy to come up with in front of the opposition.

Sangakkara bats at 3 and is also asked to take gloves. You are messing up with your top3 here which matters the most in test cricket.

Bowling attack is excellent though.

He was more of a deflector than a shot player. Very, very hard to get out, and scored at a decent clip for his era.
 
Extremely effective batsman, one of the best ever in ODI. Javed tinted his legacy for dragging career on knees for few years, otherwise he had a genuine shot at AT ODI XI - remarkably consistent middle order run machine who was probably the most clinical finisher ever. ODI context has changed lot hence stats are not comparable, but at one point Javed had 9 consecutive 50+ and best part of 80s, he batted with 45+/70+ stats from middle order.

His stats are better in Test than his batting, but still I read DK Lillee rating him only 2nd to Viv among batsmen he had bowled (but, he didn't include Greg & AB in that list, because he never bowled at them in Test). That's not the biggest factor because Marshall rates Vengsarkar the toughest he had bowled (along with GG), still Javed was a fantastic Test batsman; probably one of best 5 spin players ever along with Lara, Sunny, Azhar & Zaheer.

The only case Miandad has over Younis is that the standard of bowling was better in his time. That is undoubtedly true.

-Miandad's record against WI is disastrous. He had only 1 good series against them, and even in that series in 1988, Ambrose was playing his first series and Walsh was still inexperienced. Only Marshall was at his peak. He scored two tons in that sries and in one of them Marshall didn't even play

-Younis' overseas record is far superior. You can say he faced worse attacks, but it's uniform almost across the board. His record is simply more consistent.

-Younis' conversion rate was far better. Miandad scored 23 hundreds in 124 tests. Younis scored 34 despite playing 6 fewer tests. Again, you can say bowlers were better in Miandad era, but it is still a big gap in conversion rate. Hard to ignore.

Walsh had played for 4 years by 1988. He was plenty experienced.

Scoring a ton vs Ambrose/Walsh and then against Ambrose/Walsh/prime Marshall is quite impressive. Yes, he failed against WI early but did show serious improvement.

It was Ambrose's first series and he averaged 52. He was dropped not long after. Not the bowler he went on to become.

I'm just correcting the notion that Javed was some giant against great bowling attacks as it is used as a crutch to rate him over Younis. Do you really think if Younis had faced WI over that era he would not have averaged 29?
 
He is not underrated at all. He is Pakistan's only ATG batsman, and the best Asian batsman after Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Kohli, Sangakkara and Dravid.

Younis never managed to have a dominant series in a major country and apart from one innings, consistently failed throughout the series which ensured that Pakistan had no chance of winning the series. In addition, his stats are inflated due to have bashing of average spinners in the UAE.

In 2016,-17 he had a great chance of finishing off as an ATG but he blew it with both hands. However, he failed miserably in 14 out of the 17 innings that he played, one of his three notable innings was a useless dead rubber hundred (Sydney). In addition, he has been a very average Limited Overs player.

Apart from a small section of Pakistani fans, Younis Khan does not have the status of an ATG and is generally not placed with the same batsmen as the ones I rated above him, i.e. Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Kohli, Sangakkara, Dravid and Miandad.

In terms of pure batsmanship, he was not in the same league as some of the other quality Pakistani batsmen such as Inzamam, MoYo, Majid, Zaheer, Saleem Malik etc. He was a great player of spin but was lacking in other facets - he didn't have the ability to dominate fast bowling.

However, none of those batsmen had the opportunity of scoring heaps of runs on UAE wickets against some substandard bowling. The only time foreign pacers got any purchase on UAE surfaces was in the 2013 series vs South Africa.

du Plessis tampered with the ball and Steyn and Philander made it sing. Younis was a walking wicket in that series and batted like a tail-ender.

Statistically, he is the best Test batsman Pakistan has produced, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Arguably the best batsman of spin Pakistan has produced, but the likes of Miandad and Saleem Malik will have something to say about that.

I think you mean this outside Asia..
 
Miandad is not underrated but rather overrated. World cricket judges your ability to play against the very best. That's why what we identify someone as ATG's because they performed against the best in the business in their heyday.
In the 80's it was all about the WI.
In the late 90's and early 00's it was all about AUS.
That's why Gavaskar and Lara are ATG's but not Miandad.

Miandad is definitely better than Dravid if you consider both tests and ODIs.
 
I don't think he is overrated as no one claims he is a top tier ATG along with Bradman, Richards, Tendulkar. But he has a slot in the tier below.

He was invaluable to the Pakistan team and along with Imran was primary reason for elevating Pakistan to a top tier team.

Hanif's marathon 499 and 337 testify his phenomenal mental tenacity.Boycott may not have kept the scoreboard ticking but nevertheless revealed phenomenal concentration.Gavaskar often resembled a monk meditating.Placed Hanif on top considering the number hours he stuck out there in the middle.Even if Sunny was the best I feel by a whisker Hanif and Geoff could be more set and harder to dislodge.Taken into consideration the number of times Boycott remained unbeaten also.Often Border and Dravid resembled surgeons on a cricket field.

Where does Javed Miandad rank amongst the pantheon of great batsmen and cricketers?

No batsmen in his time or even cricketer could revive a sinking ship of lift a team out of the depths of despair more than Javed Miandad.No batsmem resembled a soldier more on the cricket field who took combative spirit to it's ultimate depth.His test statistics put him alongside the greatest of batsmen and cricketers in every format of his time.Above all more than the runs he compiled it was the extent to which he niggled opposing bowlers.Javed was the ultimate scourge of great bowlers. There were more talented and technicaly sound batsmen but for resilience Javed overpowered everyone. Unlike Border for a time Miandad was the best batsmen in the world from 1988-89,overshadowing even the great Viv Richards.In his entire career unlike so many greats Javed's average never fell below 50.On home pitches Javed was simply a champion even overshadowing Tendulkar,Gavaskar,Viv Richards or Border.On bad wickets he could overshadow all of them.He was not as technically refined as many greats but could at his best produce strokes from his very own book.In it's own right his batting had shades of genius,particularly when executing the pull stroke where he displayed sheer wizardry.Even if not the most agressive Javed could send jitters down the spine of opposition like few cricketers ever.

What may go against Javed was that he amassed the bulk of his runs at home and averaged around 45 overseas.Unlike many greats he was not prolific in Australia in 1981-82,83-84 or 89-90.Unlike Majid Khan and Wasim Raja he was not prolific against the great Calypso pace attack ,apart from the 1988 tour when he averaged over 57 including scoring 2 centuries.Alan Border totally eclipsed Javed against the Carribean pace battery.Javed also did not win as many games like Inzamam did.

In ODI's Miandad was simply a maestro who was the ultimate architect in scripting a winning a run chase.His 114 at Sharjah must rank amongst the best 5 ODI innings of all time.His unbeaten 57 in the 1992 world cup semi-final was the pivot or fulcrum of his team's win and he played a similar role in the world cup final.In 1987 he registered 8 consecutive 50's which was another phenomenal achievement.I have very rarely seen a batsmen with more surgical skill in ODI cricket who would would keep the scoreboard moving in the gravest of situations to stitch a wound.He knew exactly what shot to play for what ball and could improvise strokes of his very own.

It is pertinent that the great Dennis Lillee ranks Javed amongst the best batsmen he ever bowled to only behind Viv,Sobers,Gower,Barry Richards, Greame Pollock and Greg Chappell.Viv Richards ranked Gavakar,Greg Chappell and Javed Miandad to be the 3 best batsmen of his time.Michael Holdiong also rated Javed to be his prize oponent.Even Richard Hadlee felt Javed was a jewel amongst batsmen.

Summing up statistics home and away,technical skill,abilty to dominate opposition ,consistency,performance in a crisis,as a batsmen to me only Bradman,Hobbs,Tendulkar,Viv Richards,Lara,Sobers,Hammond,Gavaskar,Hutton, Greg Chappell,Graeme Pollock and George Headley rate ahead.If I excluded ODI's and considered only test matches then Rahul Dravid,Everton Weekes and Alan Border would just nose Javed.I rate Miandad above Steve Waugh considering the opponents he faced.So tentatively Javed is 13th best overall as a batsmen and 16th in test cricket.As a cricketer overall Javed would rank around 50th being overshadowed by the great bowlers like Warne,Marshall,Akram,Lillee,Mcgrath,Ambrose or Waqar and all-rounders like Sobers,Imran,Botham ,Kallis and Hadlee.Being a better captain Border would nose Javed while Kapil Dev,Alan Donald,Geoff Boycott,Graham Gooch,Gordon Greenidge would rank a shade below.
 
Gavaskar. He even talked about how he switches on and switches off between overs. Even while fielding he had utmost concentration. He is still the one who is extremely furious when batsmen don't run with the bat in the correct hand , when batsmen don't slide theri bat in. He has played some of the longest test innings.

It is not.

The average falling from 57.09 after 150 innings, to 52.57 after 189 innings implies that the last 39 innings had an average of 35.2 with the simplifying assumption of no "not outs".
 
He's rated fine. In Tests, he wasn't the absolute top drawer because of his record outside.
 
JM is greatly respected by most fans and cricketers that played with him. The great Viv Richards said if required he would choose Javed to bat for his life. Those who do not rate him are ones who don't understand Cricket. Anyone, even tail enders can play great strokes on a batting paradise. Javed could play in all conditions, the man was a proper street fighter whenever he came out to bat. Admittedly, not the most fluent of stroke players yet would never give an inch to any opposition. Would die for the cause if need be often holding our batting together when he was playing.

Sure? He got 260 at the Oval (admitedly on a road against a crocked Dilley and crocked Botham after Foster broke down).
