An average of 50 as a test opener, along with great performances in Asia.

Is he an ATG?

Nah never really liked him. I am not sure what the stats say but all I can ever remember of Hayden is him bullying weak opposition. Since then he has also become an awful commentator.

If Hayden with a 50 avg is not ATG, then who is? On other corner of PP, we are discussing Cook's ATG status with 45 avg.

Table sorted by away average.
This is a main reason Hayden is not a ATG but just a step below.
Hayden away average is not that great in comparison to others.
His average is about 35 in England.

No Tendulkar?

Unfortunately in cricket greatness seems to be decided retrospectively using stats. In my view a player who in his playing days commanded serious respect and fear from opposition for a considerable length of time is a great player, and Mathew Hayden, Sehwag, Jayasurya all fitted that bill. Yes some were stronger in Asian conditions while others in bouncy conditions, which is natural. Hayden on the other hand was instrumental in winning a series in India which probably makes him greater than most. But talking about openers IMO the best this world has seen is Graeme Smith and I don't need stats to judge that. The fact that guy has played match and series winning innings multiple timee in Australia, england, UAE, India makes him perhaps the best batsman of his generation and not just the best opening batsman.

Hayden wasn't instrumental in any series win in India but his performance in 2001 series was legendary.

Martyn and Clarke won them 2004 series in India.

Among the openers, Smith is the best. He was prolific in plenty of series wins away from home, i.e. Australia(2008) and England(2008). He also drew a series in England in 2003 and UAE in 2014.

The top openers I have seen:-

Smith
Hayden
Cook/Sehwag

When did Smith play match winning innings in India?

"Done His Job...": Fiery Matthew Hayden Accuses Umpire Of 'Tag-teaming' With India

Legendary Australian cricket team opener Matthew Hayden faced a lot of criticism from fans following his controversial comments during the fifth T20I encounter between India and Australia in Bengaluru on Sunday. Australia needed 10 runs to win from the final over of the match and India skipper Suryakumar Yadav handed the ball to young pacer Arshdeep Singh. The first ball was a bouncer and although Matthew Wade was convinced that it was going above his head, the umpire did not award a wide to Australia. Hayden was not happy with the decision given by the umpire and following the replays of the incident, he said that Wade was correct in feeling upset by the decision taken by the umpire.

“You can see why he is upset; that's definitely a wide. Way over his head. It has to be about his position as well. He was standing up on that ball, and it was still over his head,” he said on commentary.

On the penultimate delivery of the over, controversy struck once again as a shot straight down the ground from Nathan Ellis struck the umpire Virender Sharma. The commentators discussed the possibility of the ball reaching the boundary if it did not hit the umpire after Arshdeep failed to take the catch.

“The umpire has done his job for the second time this over. Have a look at this. This time, it's the one in front, not on square. They are tag-teaming here,” Hayden commented during the discussion.

Australia went on to lose to the game by six runs and Hayden's comments received a lot of criticism from fans on social media who believed that a well-known figure like him should say such things about umpires.

Respect for Hayden for calling out the manipulators, over the years ex Aussie players have been lining up on BCCI's gate but may be the time Hayden spent with Rizwan has a lightning effect on him

Umpires were controversial during the whole series and ICC should be taking some action against it. These controversies are coming in numbers nowadays nd most of them are related to India. Something is wrong to be honest.

This is so stupid to be honest from Hayden. Just go watch the game or series again. There were so many drs umpire's calls that went against ind especially when ind was bowling and nobody had an issue these are marginal calls
Nobody complained then. This is just sour grapes from Hayden. And the umpire stopping the 4 - jeez that's childish stuff from Haydos.. expect better commentary from a former international player. He's a horrible commentator anyway ..
