Is modern batting threatening to ruin cricket's proud legacy?

Modern batting has probably been the worst curse put on cricket in the past decade
Too much is being given to the batsmen these days and as a fast bowling fan it really annoys me.
Gone are the days where batsmen used to fear for their heads :holding or their toes :waqar
Instead it's the bowlers that are fearing the batsmen now.

But it's not just cricket's future bowling that is suffering but also the HISTORY of batting
I fear the day (probably 10 years from now) someone will pick up a picture of this man :viv look up his record and dismiss him as a very ordinary batsmen based purely on his stats. An averae near 50 and a strike rate of 90 is considered pretty normal for today's batsmen in today's day and age but noone will know the genius that this man was.

Lets take a look at the past WC where we saw 2 400+ team totals scored in the space of a week. And we saw 2 200s within the space of a month. This was considered a complete rarity up until 2 years ago.
It is quiet ridiculous and ruined the WC for me as a fan. Making for the worst onesided games I have ever seen in the world cup. Bowlers are a mockery in cricket these days. Check out what one of the greatest fast bowlers of the game has to say (watch for the face palm)

When Afridi blasted the fastest century in his VERY first ODI innings nobody at the time considered this record to be breakable and for 17 years it stood up. But within the space of 2 years we have seen this record been broken NOT ONCE but TWICE.

Another record..Saeed Anwar's 194...a score which broke Viv Richard's 13 year record for the highest score in ODIs. Anwar's record stood for 13 years itself before it was broken by none other than the little master himself :sachin.

Now at the time...it seemed only appropriate that the biggest achievement in ODI history would go to one of the greatest batsmen to play the game. It seemed (to me atleast) that there was but ONE man on the planet that could achieve such a fete.

But just 2 years later that record was broken by a very ordinary innings from Virender Sehwag against a very ordinary bowling attack.

Since 2010 (when the first 200 was scored) the 200 run barrier has been crossed not ONCE, not TWICE, but FIVE times in the last 5 years. 2 of the scores by the same batsmen on the flattest tracks ever.

Not only did this take away the glamour of Sachin's first 200 but when batsmen MUCH inferior in skill to him are scoring like this it annoyed me. A record which hadn't been broken for 40 years since the first ODI had been played has been broken 6 times in the last 5 years. Let that sink in for a moment.

At this rate it is only inevitable Lara's 400 will be surpassed. The highest team total in ODI. The highest successful run chase and so on.

It is essential that these records must be preserved to retain the rich history of cricket batting.

Yes they did. too many 300+runs in ODIs and too 100s being scored like 50s.

If it does become super inclined to batting at the rate it is going, then matches will not become a game of skill, but more of a game of chance, whoever wins on the day wins.

I can take solace that with Indians ruining the game with these big bats, small boundaries, flat piches, that they will never produce a sub<25 bowler :)))

Indians have ruined the game, whereas Pakistanis have revolutionised it, with the introduction of neutral umpires by Imran Khan, reverse swing, fast bowling, doosra, leg-spin (Abdul Qadir inspiring Warne)... and from that you have players like Jayasuriya who decided to attack in the first 10 overs due to the difficult of batting againt reverse swing. Indians think of cricket from a commercial aspect, no surprise srinavasan was booed at the WC final.

No, because this period of cricket will become a footnote of history.

Inflated records are devalued ones, and are quickly ignored.

What's with the Indian hate, and btw Pakistanis are no angels either.

The 330+ scores in this worldcup are becoming ridiculous. Leading to very one sided contests. Its a complete slugfest. The batting privileges have only gotten worse since the last worldcup. The highest ODI team score has been broken twice in the past 2 years. Bowling in cricket is dead. Limited to simple line and length bowling . You will see rare glimpses of good bowling here and there but noone bowler that will stand out as one to be feared

Some of the scores this WC: 207, 105, 136, 207, 201, 152, 227, 244, 248/8, 288, 273, 280, 172, 266, 212, 247, 125, and 212.

Im not counting the scores of teams batting second. The teams batting first are racking up massive scores. Halfway through the tournament Already 8 300+ scores. 5 of which are 330+ making the chasing team crumble under pressure. This may seem ordinary in todays game. But it wasnt like this even 2 worldcups ago

Pakistan, SL, Afghanistan have made some very low scores batting first this world cup. If such teams bat first more frequently we will see low scores and everyone can be happy.

With conviction anyone name me a bowler in the last 10 years (post Dale Steyn) that has taken the cricket world by storm

Thats not the point. Those are more failure of the batsmen rather than good bowling. Once the big teams start playing against each other you'll see how much this is a problem. Maybe the contests will be closer but i guarantee the bowlers will suffer.

The boundaries are ridiculously small. the fact that Shankars EDGE went for six and Archer getting a bowled which went for six is **

Some people in this forum tell that Pakistan is scoring 300 + regularly. After yesterday's loss, this thread got life 😁

Why can’t we just consider the possibility that with better fitness and technology, batsmen are becoming more prominent and chances of cheating have come down. They can break apart all these new inventions- Doosra, Teesra, Sodabottle caps in matter of days with computers.

Also teams that don’t rely on technology so much are regressing. These are the only ones talking about days when football was played barefoot, and teams were able to manipulate red balls without anyone getting to know.

India, Aus, Eng, NZ and WI have no such issues with the bat dominating the ball. WI problems are more financial than anything else.

Its not limited to any loss. This is a long term thing. Even the ODI series of Pakistan vs England right before this world cup was ridiculous with the scores both teams were racking up. I could care less who wins or loses. But bowling as an art in cricket is dead for sure and because this is such a major tournament with multiple teams it only gets more evident

Tbh, WC'19 has seen fairly decent score and batsmen have been subdued by bowlers in some of the match.

India, Aus, NZ also have there bowlers bludgeoned. They dont mind because they win but bowling as an art form is dead. If such advances have been made by the batsmen to adjust why are we still keeping short boundaries. Why are there still thicker bats where edges go for six. Why are fielding restrictions so strict. Batsmens advances in technical skill and technological advances do not justify those things does it. The balance between bat and ball was what made cricket interesting. Now it's whose team can hit more sixes

THe helicopter shot that Hardik played against Amir was 77 meter boundary whch is long. He gobbled 1 meter inside at best. Any other smaller ground that was a six.

Also Batting collapses due to technical batting failures don't count

Again this is not limited to one match or one ground. Its a general trend how much easier it is for batsmen to bludgeon bowlers completely evident with stats to back it up

You have to put that down to intent first. Back in the 80s batsmen gave respect to even pie chuckers. Guys like Kapil, Richards, Srikkanth were able to strike big just like now. There was this match against NZ in 1987 world cup. India needed to score runs in certain number of overs to finish the top of teh group. Sunny and Srikkanth added 132 runs in 15 odd overs.

Another match was when Pakistan needed 72 runs in 6 overs (those days it was beyond impossible), Salim Malik went nuts. picked 19 off Manider 17 off Kapil (it was such a rare thing those days) and pulled off a heist.

Look ICC trying to make it more entertainment. It's all about the craze. Nothing wrong with ICC. Let the bowlers come with new ideas.

You dont even have to go that far back. Even in the 2000s you could say there was competition between bat and ball. Right now that competition is dead. I know Im not alone in this matter. many past cricketers and experts have complained about the shorter boundaries and how too much is being given to batmsen these days. Listen to the stuff Bill Lawry says. Or even Viv Richards on many occasions has complained about this

Then its not cricket. Simple as that. The ICC can form rules in favor of batsmen but can't in favour of bowlers simply for the sake of entertainment? that ridiculous. Some of the best matches back in the day were low scoring thrillers. Might as well replace bowlers with bowling machines if they wanted more sixes and fours

Batting style varied from generation to generation. Back in the 80s common approach was keeping wickets in hand till 40th over (even if it means going at 3 or 4 an over till 40th and attack after that. Let me tell you what kind of line up that Pakistan had in the mid to late 80s

Mudassar Nazar
Moshin Khan
Qasim Omar
Ramiz Raja

this top 4 will put anyone to sleep instantly. THey won't show any intent.

Only guy who used to go hard at the new ball was Srikkanth nobody else. Then NZ adopted Greatbatch strategy. Worked for one world cup. Pinch hitting concept was there. They would send a lower order batsman to swing the bat.

THen Tendulkar started opening. His first innings as opener in NZ was 82 runs in 49 balls. He was the aggressor back then

Real change started after 1996. Jaya/Kalu changed the script by attacking from both ends. This was something new.All in all the approach was go hard in the first 15 and take it easy till 40th over and attack. That was the formula

Middle overs used to be such fun time for bowlers as batsmen won't show any intent. After T20 things have changed. Slog over starts early like 35th over (depending on wickets you have), Same way batsmen attack from 10th till 40th. He has been doing well.

Im not denying batting styles have evolved. Even in the late 90s and 2000s you would see evenly matched contests between bat and ball but now they are non existent. The small boundaries, bigger bats flatter pitches, ball changes have nothing to do with any of those batting technique changes. Atleast these thing can be regulated to keep some contest can it not?

More gigantic scores in the WC. This is getting ridiculous. That NZ SA match was an anomaly. Other than that its either huge scores or at other times complete batting collapses.

Things have become worse after 2011 WC with 2 new balls, fielding restrictions and extremely batting friendly pitches. In tests, we can still see good competition between bat and ball

Alot has to do with the state of pitches also. If they start produsing wickets favouring bowlers the things will change.

Easiest way to do it, without changing rules of the game would be to freeze bat sizes & have a reduction target within 5 years edge thickness, total thickness etc must nit exceed XYZ. ICC/MCC cricket committee can decide but I suggest they wind it back 10 years in bat size.

That gives manufacturers, players some time to adjust. Lucky modern big bats don't last too long.

Second one is to stop roping in grounds. Seen some ridiculous ropes at this WC alone taking 20m off some boundaries. Why?

Bring in a basic no more than 5m rope to boundary rule. I prefer the old fences but if they insist ropes are safer, make 5m the maximum.

One rule change I WOULD support is to do away with leg byes & runs of helmets etc. If you're not good enough to hit the ball, you don't get a run. Simple as that. And if you switch hit/reverse sweep- both sides are regarded as off stump for Lbw purposes- risk vs reward.

The rest is batting skill & we will jus have to accept different stats in different eras.

If anything, previous generations of cricketers are overrated, and certainly didn't play to their potential. They played for themselves, little pressure and weak focus on technical part of the game. Today, the batsman don't allow the bowlers to settle, and any bowlers need rhythm to bowl well. Modern batting has more innovation, team game, attractiveness.
