Pakistan thinking it actually has leverage over these tech companies. Apparently pakistan wants these tech companies to hand over people’s private and personal conversations and data even those who have no ill intent but criticize the government or the army for their actions and policies. I know pakistan does not care about real free speech as everyone thinks they are God themselves and judging and acting against those who they don’t think are Muslim or patriots but this takes it to another level. Now even the “good muslim” will be a target for simply questioning or stating an opinion. This is what China does to uygar Muslims . This is also what Iran does to its dissidents. What North Korea does so easily. Instead of being the good ones pakistan seems to on its way to be the baddies

Yeah I'm not a fan of infringing on civil liberties and the government acting as a baby sitter dictating people how to live there lives. Of course if there is information necceasry for national security and public safety then they do something to track and retrieve that data like most countries already do and I'm sure they do that already however banning websites and apps is just plain stupid, the problem is Pakistan is run by old uncles who are out of touch with technology, they didn't grow up with it so don't understand how important it is for business, education, entertainment, socialization etc and what they don't understand is that by banning websites and apps they're discouraging foreign investment into Pakistan, people don't want to invest in a country where their product or service could be banned abruptly at the whims of any government.

Just imagine the consequences on foreign investment into Pakistan. Like why would Google invest money in Pakistani start ups, or Microsoft open a campus in Karachi or Facebook establish a data center in Peshawar if they're afraid that they would be censured and their fined by the government.

Should just ask Chinese Tech to invest in Pak and ask them to store the data there, they already have such policies in place and can manage, its a win win for everyone except American tech..

Tbf American big tech has been complicit in censoring Kashmiri activists and deleting their posts at the orders of the Indian government and sharing data with them. They clearly have a dual policy.

True and they probably do the same for American Right wing posts as well but as per that article, the ask is even more from PTA.. so Chinese tech which has implemented all that already can easily migrate that..

Most big tech companies in America have a lot of high caste Indian Hindus in upper management and executive roles, so India gets a waiver on censorship and violating civil liberties.

As I have said before, Pakistan is fast becoming a fascist state. There is no hope for this country.

What we are seeing now is Zia 2.0. When people will look back 20 years from now wondering what went wrong it is this government and its policies that will be questioned similar to how we look back to Zia and what he did.

That's not the reason. They get carte blanche because FB, Amazon don't want to offend their government which is their only guarantor of access to a market of 200 million+ middle-class consumers.

India's pettiness can best be seen by the cold shoulder Modi gave to Jeff Bezos when he came to India last year, by not even meeting him. All because The Washington Post which Bezos owns did critical reporting on Indian policies in Occupied Kashmir.

Problem with Pakistan is that they is misunderstand their place in the global system, and misunderstand the leverage they have in making tech giants bow down to their demands. Pakistan is not exactly a very attractive prospect for foreign tech firms and MNCs as compared to India. The market is simply not that big. Even internet users make up a miniscule amount compared to those in India.

I think some of you need to pipe down and read the article. Social media is not being banned in Pakistan, but online content will be policed and censored where applicable.

This is no different to what is happening in the USA, UK, etc.
Social media giants in the West decided what is permissible, and what is not, and censor accordingly.

Not to mention apps are banned by governments too.

In a nutshell Pakistan government is denying social media giants control in Pakistan. Nothing wrong in this.

By your own admission Pakistan is not actually a fascist state at present, seems to me there is plenty of hope then. Perhaps it will stay non-fascist!

Which exact journalist and private citizens information is given by tech companies to government in US or UK if they critique the government?

The tech companies are deleting covid conspiracy theories and Nazi and whites supremacist threats to people aka terror threats. Do you believe these conspiracy theories and Nazi threats should be treated as just “valid opinions”

How did you know their caste?

Modi is the Prime Minister of 1.3bn people, he gets to decide who he deems important enough to meet.

Modi govt has taken Amazon and Flipkart head on, so that they dont stamp out the brick and mortar stores out and create a Duo Poly. There is an ongoing investigation on flouting of foreign investment rules. In all this, it would have been stupid of Modi to meet Bezos.

Btw, what percentage of Indians read Washington Post? Its laughable to think WaPo can have any effect on Indian govt.

If you believe in free speech then every opinion is permissible and shouldn't be censored.

Oh, Julian Assange. Look him up for the answer to your first question.

:)

Indians told me themselves that the IT field is dominated by South Indian Brahmins, they speak something called Telugu, a really exotic language. They've even brought caste discrimination to America, there was recently a big case where Indian hindus at Cisco were discriminating employees based off caste.

Not the slightest bit surprised. The regressive & racist caste system is ingrained in Indian society and has been for centuries. It won't go away anytime soon regardless of what certain Indians say, or make of someone like Modi becoming PM.

It's also laughable to think that India would object to a map on Saudi currency but they did. Or that they would be so very offended by the Canadian PMs words of support towards farmers, especially since Canada has more Sikhs in its Parliament than India's. But that offended India too.

The problem is not with Indians reading the WP. But with India's international image being tarnished.

Lol. Telugu is spoken by most people of Andhra and Telengana, it has nothing to do with caste.

This story of Indians told me is too often heard on PP.

The case has already been dismissed from one court.

A map denotes the sovereign borders of a country. If any country's map is distorted and published by another country officially, objections will be raised. Esp when the map is on a bank note released for the G20 summit, which India will attend.

Sikh MPs in India are more than proportional to their population.

Canada PM was poking his nose into affairs that have nothing to do with canada. Canadian Sikhs are Canadian citizens, their opinion holds zero relevance in India. The Canadian High commissioner was demarched. Trudeau should have realised how little he is valued in India, after the bare minimum protocol he received in India.

You lack basic comprehension skills and the ability to understand nuance. I never said Telugu was a caste or had anything to do with caste, I just pointed out that many Indians I've spoken to have remarked that the IT field is dominated by high caste Indians mainly from the south of India and the language that a lot of the Indian immigrants speak over here is called Telugu.

You can defend all these things collectively or individually but the main point remains the same. India is thin-skinned and can't stand criticism or anyone deviating from the official line of their government. Shows a very special kind of pettiness.

Well India doesn't respect Kashmir's sovereign borders either Madplayer
