2 Statements from our Chief Selector, Inzi, during his presser when he announced the World Cup squad caught my attention:

Statement 1:

While I am the selector, I am not keeping anyone out of the team. The doors are open for both Sarfaraz Ahmed and Imad Wasim. They have been out of ODI cricket for a long time, but if Pakistan requires them, they will be picked. I would like to highlight that we count performance in Pakistan’s domestic cricket and anyone who does well there would be considered for selection. There are no two ways about it.

Statement 2:

Whoever wants to play, should play first-class cricket. If they give performances there, they will be considered for the team. This is not just about Mohammad Amir, this is about everyone who wishes to play for Pakistan.

The question really is. Is domestic/First-class cricket fair reflection of a players suitability for international cricket?

Both domestic as well as leagues or county cricket should be added to the selection criteria. Playing on flat tracks and scoring heavily in pakitsan is not enough.

It is impossible to be an international cricketer without playing in domestic circuit. it gives opportunity to batters to spend as much time in home conditions against spinners and hone their skills. domestic cricket is only next to international games and any change in technique can be tested in match scenarios against high-quality oppositions. Over the years Pakistan domestic cricket has improved in terms of quality. Domestic cricket is key for international selection, there is no doubt about it.

Sarfaraz Ahmed hit his 16th FC hundred.

This would imply he is a sure fire selection for the tour of Australia?

One reason why we are not winning tournaments is because we are selecting players only after a few domestic games, and we do not respect experienced domestic performers. No matter how low quality domestic cricket may be, it still provides a good indication of a player's future potential

agreed

Domestic performance should be the ONLY criteria for selection (including PSL)

The game is changing fast and this domestic cricket criteria won't be staying for too long. If you take the example of football, most top players of South American countries like Argentina and Brazil are playing their football in Europe and they all get selected to play for their country whenever an international event happen.

The selection of players for the T20I team should rely exclusively on their performance in the PSL, without applying the same criteria for other formats. Haris Rauf's case is illustrative, as he was chosen for the ODI and Test teams primarily based on his PSL performance, and he is now getting tonked

I don’t understand the question.
Is performance in matriculation exams the right criteria for college?

I think we need a smarter approach. I would only take into account the performances in domestic cricket, PSL and County cricket (excluding T20 & Hundred). Therefore ignoring all the other Mickey Mouse Leagues of this world.

The answer is no because Pakistan don’t follow this rule

Playing in National Tournaments is the right way to pick players for Pakistan. It helps choose based on how well they perform in familiar conditions, making sure the selection is fair and based on their skills at home.

As per reports Pakistan domestic cricketers expressed disappointment with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over delay in issuance of contracts and payments.

The players, for the past five months, were also not getting daily allowance for their participation in domestic season.

Seems it's not

Because if it was then you would not have the likes of Mohammad Nawaz being selected for Test duties!

It should be for ODI and Test selections.

All ODI and Test players should participate in domestic cricket.

Long format cricket fosters endurance in players, making T20s seem effortless by comparison. Batsmen who have trained to bat all day are extremely fit and can effortlessly score quick singles and doubles, while bowlers who have honed their skills in longer formats can maintain their pace throughout a T20 match.

In contrast, Pakistan's mercenary culture has created players who are only attuned to survive in the shortest format, often seen struggling to keep up with the demands of T20s themselves. This is evident in Aamir's laboured effort during a crucial super over, batsmen gasping for air while running between wickets, and fielders losing focus towards the end of an innings - periods crucial to the outcome of a T20 game.

As a result, we now have players who only prefer to play shorter formats or participate in a random T20 leagues in Burkina Faso over the more challenging 4-day cricket in the domestic circuit. If given the option they'll offer a hundred excuses starting from low pay, poor conditions etc... but the matter of fact is they prefer playing a random B or C grade league, confined to hotel rooms and eat free food.

This lot have become the cricketing versions of council estate benefit scroungers!

PCB announces major salary hike for domestic cricketers

Domestic cricket in Pakistan is set for a financial uplift as PCB enhances player salaries.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a substantial salary increase for domestic cricketers as part of its Men’s Domestic Cricket Season 2024-25 plans.

This development, unveiled on Monday, marks a significant upgrade in player earnings and is set to impact 150 domestic players, alongside centrally contracted cricketers.

The upcoming season, which runs from September 1, 2024, to August 5, 2025, will feature 261 matches across eight senior men's tournaments.

The PCB's new contract structure is designed to recognise and reward top-performing players over the past three years, ensuring a fair and competitive compensation package.

The revamped contracts are divided into three categories:
  • Category 1: 40 players will receive PKR 550,000 per month.
  • Category 2: 50 players will earn PKR 400,000 per month.
  • Category 3: 60 players will be paid PKR 250,000 per month.
This is a notable increase compared to the previous season, where domestic contracts ranged from PKR 50,000 to PKR 300,000.

In addition to higher salaries, players will enjoy increased match fees, with PKR 200,000 for red-ball cricket, PKR 125,000 for 50-over games, and PKR 100,000 for T20 matches.

This marks a significant jump from the last season’s fees, which were PKR 80,000 for red-ball and PKR 40,000 for white-ball cricket.

The PCB’s initiative reflects its commitment to supporting domestic cricket and providing better financial security for players.

By enhancing player compensation, the PCB aims to foster greater competition and elevate the standard of domestic cricket in Pakistan.

That is a good step taken by PCB. More investment is needed in the domestic structure and this increase in payments is definitely a good 1st step.

Domestic is a must!

If PSL is to be added to the criteria, then the PSL needs to be configured in a way that only
2 overseas,
2 internationals,

Remaining players
uncapped emerging under 21/19

It should be but even here the holistic performance of a player must be overviewed.

These stats show why domestic performers should be preferred. Look at the number of matches and wickets.
