Heard earlier this year that there was going to be an ICC Test Championship in 2017 which would feature the Top 4 Test teams, with December 31 2016 being the cut off date for qualification. Can someone clarify if it's been cancelled or if it's still happening. Because if it is happening it's possible that we could see Pakistan play India in a one-off Test match in England.

No. The CT is the major event in 2017. The Test Championship should happen in 2018 because there are no major events in that year but the ICC has said nothing about it.

2017: CT
2018: Test Championship
2019: ODI WC
2020: T20 WC

Would have been a good four years.

So England gets back to back Champions Trophys, the Test Championship, the World T20 in 2020 and the 50-over World Cup the previous year?

Something is amiss...

Fairly sure the wt20 is in Australia?

The T20 WC has been reinstated for 2018 by the ICC recently so I'm guessing the Test Championship is a no go in that case.

I believe/suspect there two reasons why the test championship is not already on and will not in the near future.

1. The all important BCCI want no part of it. Likely because they will lose financial control of their own test matches. ICC would run the show similar to ODI, T20 world cups. Which means the ICC gets the money and the boards just wait for hand outs (if there are any).

2. The people in power have run the $$ numbers and they don't add up. There are several series that would incur losses. Perhaps the money spinners are not enough to compensate for the loss makers, and ICC ends up paying out more than what they take in.

Tests perhaps are not a viable product anymore. I am saying this despite to Ind/Eng and Aus/Pak series drawing huge crowds both in the stadium and on TV.

ICC test championship in its current format is not really an exciting prospect for me.

Just the top 4 teams in a shoot off in a neutral venue.

Disinterest from private Indian TV stations led to the 2017 World Test Championship being cancelled and replaced by some non-event called the Champions Trophy.

It is ODIs so it appeals to an Asian audience, but TV viewing figures per match in England, where it takes place, are expected to be so small as to be unmeasurable.

It looks like a diluted World Test Championship - a Final only - will take place at Lords in June 2019.

Odd years in the U.K. are no coincidence - no competition from the football World Cup or Euros.

I see a total lack of vision and leadership from the ICC regarding the WTC (or anything else that requires taking a stance). Why the dependency on one board and private TV channel related to that board. They should move on/beyond this and think out of the box. Device a strategy, take a stance, make a decision and implement it.

The current situation is absolutely idiotic where the entire cricketing world is dancing to the tune of one cricket board.

To see who is the best team in Tests.

Yes well tests isn't a format where you can decide in 2 games if they are the best in the world.

Take the current top 4 for example. India are no.1 but even Indians know it wont mean jack till they perform better abroad. Even if they win ICC test championship, the team will be expected to win in places like SA, Aus.
