China conquered the whole area known as Arunachal Paradesh in 1962 but evacuated that area in spirit of a good neighbor and principle of peaceful co-existence. This issue remained predominantly under the radar until Narendra Modi became the PM of India. The clashes at Galwan Valley and Dokhlam region reignited the old hostilities but learning from it's past follies, the BJP government acted wisely and now we hardly see any aggressive reaction from India on this issue.

So is this BJP's mild response policy of late a lifeline for the security of Arunachal Paradesh or is it motivated by the fear of losing the seven sister states by an eventual attack on the chicken neck region?

India's tepid response to China's renaming in Arunachal Pradesh ignores larger consequences

It is not just India's own citizens that have to be educated and informed about India's territories but also the international public

All told, the MEA's brief and tepid response to media personnel in New Delhi in the wake of China's actions are not going to be enough to disrupt Beijing's attempts to socialise foreign audiences into accepting and internalising Chinese claims over Arunachal Pradesh. Credit: iStock Photo

In early April, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs issued a notification that 'standardized some geographical names' in Arunachal Pradesh. This is the third time that Beijing has issued a set of Chinese names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, the first occasion was in 2017, and the next in 2021.

The latest Chinese action must also be seen from a wider geopolitical context not just the bilateral lens. Since Sino-Russian ties have recently been in the news, let us look at two recent Chinese moves with respect to Russia that might be relevant here.

One, in February, China's Ministry of Natural Resources issued a new document on regulations of how to depict Chinese territories on maps. These regulations covered among other things, South China Sea, Taiwan, and Kashmir, but also required the addition of old Chinese names to eight places along the Russian-Chinese border including for the Russian port city of Vladivostok. Chinese hyper-nationalists view these areas as part of territory China lost to the Russian empire.

The Siliguri Corridor - so called 'Chicken's neck' might seem highly vulnerable on a small map but is in actual fiercely protected by a layered defense system. Its virtually impregnable.

No offense bhaijaan but it's your east Pakistan...

Balochistan will become a separate country before the chicken's neck is severed.
Nope, If you think objectively it is just a tiny piece of land surrounded by two countries hostile to India..while in comparison Balochistan liberation offers a threat to Balochistan sistan province in Iran so the comparison is entirely different.

Besides unlike East Pakistan, Balochistan isn't 1600 KM apart from Pakistan with a hostile neighbor in between.

Now Pakistan enjoying the scenes from the fence

Pakistan reaffirms support for China’s territorial integrity in Zangnan

Pakistan has reiterated its support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, following Beijing’s reaffirmation of its position on Zangnan, also known as Arunachal Pradesh.

During a weekly press briefing on Friday, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Pakistan “fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China,” and had noted recent reports regarding China’s stance on the region.

The statement comes amid renewed tensions between India and China over the disputed territory, which Beijing refers to as Zangnan.

Khan also dismissed Indian media reports alleging nuclear radiation linked to recent border tensions as “baseless and unfounded.”

He noted that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of Pakistan and India had remained in contact since May 10, emphasising the importance of continued dialogue.

Commenting on broader regional developments, Khan criticised what he described as India’s “aggressive posture,” accusing New Delhi of destabilising the regional security environment.

He said Pakistan's military operations, conducted under Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, were a response to cross-border aggression and carried out in self-defence, invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter.

“Our response was in line with our right to self-defence and aimed at preserving national sovereignty,” Khan said.

He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the two sides and urged India to uphold its commitments. “We view this as a positive step and expect India to implement the ceasefire in both letter and spirit,” he added.

Provincial authorities in Punjab also marked what they called a significant achievement under Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos with tributes and commemorative events.

Chinese are so relentless...but I appreciate Modi's policy of mum silence...just keeps China from getting infuriated 👍

By the way this same #4 economy called for a ceasefire with Pakistan.

India has always been fearful, and tearful.

Buckle up, and get those carving knives out.

India is about to be carved, again.
