China conquered the whole area known as Arunachal Paradesh in 1962 but evacuated that area in spirit of a good neighbor and principle of peaceful co-existence. This issue remained predominantly under the radar until Narendra Modi became the PM of India. The clashes at Galwan Valley and Dokhlam region reignited the old hostilities but learning from it's past follies, the BJP government acted wisely and now we hardly see any aggressive reaction from India on this issue.

So is this BJP's mild response policy of late a lifeline for the security of Arunachal Paradesh or is it motivated by the fear of losing the seven sister states by an eventual attack on the chicken neck region?

India's tepid response to China's renaming in Arunachal Pradesh ignores larger consequences

It is not just India's own citizens that have to be educated and informed about India's territories but also the international public

All told, the MEA's brief and tepid response to media personnel in New Delhi in the wake of China's actions are not going to be enough to disrupt Beijing's attempts to socialise foreign audiences into accepting and internalising Chinese claims over Arunachal Pradesh. Credit: iStock Photo

In early April, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs issued a notification that 'standardized some geographical names' in Arunachal Pradesh. This is the third time that Beijing has issued a set of Chinese names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, the first occasion was in 2017, and the next in 2021.

The latest Chinese action must also be seen from a wider geopolitical context not just the bilateral lens. Since Sino-Russian ties have recently been in the news, let us look at two recent Chinese moves with respect to Russia that might be relevant here.

One, in February, China's Ministry of Natural Resources issued a new document on regulations of how to depict Chinese territories on maps. These regulations covered among other things, South China Sea, Taiwan, and Kashmir, but also required the addition of old Chinese names to eight places along the Russian-Chinese border including for the Russian port city of Vladivostok. Chinese hyper-nationalists view these areas as part of territory China lost to the Russian empire.

The Siliguri Corridor - so called 'Chicken's neck' might seem highly vulnerable on a small map but is in actual fiercely protected by a layered defense system. Its virtually impregnable.

No offense bhaijaan but it's your east Pakistan...

Balochistan will become a separate country before the chicken's neck is severed.
Nope, If you think objectively it is just a tiny piece of land surrounded by two countries hostile to India..while in comparison Balochistan liberation offers a threat to Balochistan sistan province in Iran so the comparison is entirely different.

Besides unlike East Pakistan, Balochistan isn't 1600 KM apart from Pakistan with a hostile neighbor in between.

Another India centric thread and if we reply brother @Cpt. Rishwat gets upset asking what are we even doing in this forum?

Pakistan reaffirms support for China’s territorial integrity in Zangnan

Pakistan has reiterated its support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, following Beijing’s reaffirmation of its position on Zangnan, also known as Arunachal Pradesh.

During a weekly press briefing on Friday, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Pakistan “fully supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China,” and had noted recent reports regarding China’s stance on the region.

The statement comes amid renewed tensions between India and China over the disputed territory, which Beijing refers to as Zangnan.

Khan also dismissed Indian media reports alleging nuclear radiation linked to recent border tensions as “baseless and unfounded.”

He noted that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of Pakistan and India had remained in contact since May 10, emphasising the importance of continued dialogue.

Commenting on broader regional developments, Khan criticised what he described as India’s “aggressive posture,” accusing New Delhi of destabilising the regional security environment.

He said Pakistan's military operations, conducted under Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, were a response to cross-border aggression and carried out in self-defence, invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter.

“Our response was in line with our right to self-defence and aimed at preserving national sovereignty,” Khan said.

He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between the two sides and urged India to uphold its commitments. “We view this as a positive step and expect India to implement the ceasefire in both letter and spirit,” he added.

Provincial authorities in Punjab also marked what they called a significant achievement under Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos with tributes and commemorative events.

Congratulations on finding out the chicken’s neck on the map today. 🫡

We went from being a below average military and poor economy to #4 economy and among the strongest armies in the world during all this time and some kids in the internet have just realized we have a vulnerability

Chinese are so relentless...but I appreciate Modi's policy of mum silence...just keeps China from getting infuriated 👍

By the way this same #4 economy called for a ceasefire with Pakistan.

China is also reopening a World War 2-era airbase in Bangladesh. Near Indian border 😍

India has always been fearful, and tearful.

Buckle up, and get those carving knives out.

India is about to be carved, again.

Many sanghis probably don't know this --> Indus river originates in Tibet (which is under China).

India should not act like they own Indus river. They really don't. China can stop their water also. :inti
Their reaction is so impulsive without any exaggeration just a shot yourself in the foot act...Indeed, this step will come to haunt them

I can see India lose IOK, northeast India, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh eventually. Maybe Himachal Pradesh too. :inti

China have a role to play to liberate these areas.
It's just a matter of timing now.

India will never think of attacking Pakistan now. Moreso because of China and it's support of Pakistan.

Meanwhile India cannot do jack without Amreeka, who exposed Modi as a surrendering PM!

Modi not only banned himself from the West, it now seems he has banned himself from the East too!

India is pretty isolated militarily. They don't have a single military ally. America doesn't back them either.

Pakistan have Turkey and China as strong military allies.

Chaiwala Modi showed his stupidity when he decided to launch Operation Tandoor/Sindoor which failed miserably.

I can see Pakistan China and Bangladesh moving towards maharashtra and taking over all of India after the move they make your saying.

Im just bit concerned who Pakistan and Bangladesh will play asiacup with when there will be no India. Need to start involving Chinese in cricket

So they will counter china by building a road now...anyways an upgrade from apps ban😂

Chinese Checkers: India's strategic message to Beijing with a road, port and fest in the east

Come dawn on January 1, 2026, thousands of people — from across Arunachal Pradesh and the rest of India — may greet the new year with Surya Namaskar in a village that sees the first sunrise on Indian soil.

This grand gathering — infused with strategic undertones and spiritual symbolism — is set to be a highlight of the proposed Sunrise Festival, to be held at Dong, a remote mountain village near the India-China-Myanmar trijunction.

The festival was greenlit on May 13 during a state cabinet meeting that drew attention as it was held in Kibithu, the forward army post that faces the Chinese frontier. The inaugural Sunrise Festival — set against the backdrop of the eastern Himalayas near the border — is slated for December 29, 2025 to January 3, 2026. “Highlights will include music by local bands, water sports, trekking, and yes, a mass Surya Namaskar by thousands on New Year’s Day,” Ranphoa Ngowa, tourism secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, told ET.

While New Delhi’s recent attention has largely been on the western front, where it engaged Pakistan briefly, a series of seemingly unrelated developments in the East tell a different story.

New Trade Route
From the approval of a 166-km greenfield highway between Shillong (Meghalaya) and Silchar (Assam) — boosting connectivity to Mizoram and ultimately to Sittwe Port in Myanmar — to the announcement of a border festival in Dong, these moves together reveal a quietly unfolding strategic blueprint for the Northeast. No doubt, this road, the port, and the border festival are part of a calculated effort to secure India’s Northeast and counter China’s growing influence in the sub-continent.

When the Indian army faced off with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at Doklam in 2017 — after the PLA brought in equipment to extend a road inside Bhutan — New Delhi’s primary concern was Beijing’s attempt to inch closer to the vulnerable Siliguri Corridor, also known as the Chicken’s Neck. This narrow strip of about 22 km in North Bengal is the only land link connecting the Northeast to the rest of India.

While India successfully blocked the Chinese advance on the disputed road, it soon began working on a strategic alternative to reduce dependence on the corridor. One key step was sending dredging machines to the Jamuna River (the Brahmaputra’s name in Bangladesh), where a 175-km stretch between Sirajganj and Daikhawa was found too shallow for cargo ships — prompting efforts to deepen the channel and open up a new trade route.

Sending containerised cargo from Kolkata to Guwahati via river routes in Bangladesh was never smooth sailing though.

In November 2019, for example, the cargo vessel MV Beki, carrying coal, ran aground on the Jamuna. Two other vessels, including one operated by the Adani Group, were stranded for days near Sirajganj. Yet, the pro-India government in Dhaka, led by Sheikh Hasina, ensured that New Delhi never lost confidence in the route. That equation changed dramatically in August last year, when Hasina was ousted amid a massive, student-led uprising, altering the political landscape overnight.

Unfriendly regime in Dhaka
With an unfriendly interim government now in place in Dhaka, led by Muhammad Yunus, India has been compelled to pursue a Plan C to address the enduring vulnerability of the Siliguri Corridor.

Heightening the urgency are reports of Chinese support to revive a British-era airbase at Lalmonirhat in Bangladesh — perilously close to the Chicken’s Neck — further reinforcing New Delhi’s need for strategic alternatives.

Just a week before India launched missile strikes on Pakistan, New Delhi approved a major infrastructure push in the Northeast — a four-lane greenfield highway from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam, with an estimated cost of ₹22,864 crore. Of the proposed 166-km stretch, 144 km will cut through the rugged hills of Meghalaya.
On the face of it, planning an access-controlled highway in a region that already has an existing Shillong-Silchar road may seem unusual. But strategically, it holds significant value. The new corridor will strengthen connectivity between Guwahati and Aizawl, and eventually extend down to the India-Myanmar border.

@Bhaijaan is absolutely right in pointing out the strategic importance of the Siliguri Corridor, and credit where it’s due — India’s military and strategic community have long recognized its vulnerability and have taken commendable steps to reinforce it. Over the years, India has developed layered defenses, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced troop deployment in the region. The Indian Army's logistical reach, especially in mountainous terrain, is impressive and continues to improve year after year. There is no doubt that India has taken the threat seriously and is better prepared today than it has ever been.

That said, in the event of a full-scale war with China, the reality is grim for any country, not just India. The sheer volume of Chinese firepower, especially from the PLA Rocket Force and air support, would severely test even India’s best-prepared defenses. The Chinese have deep logistical networks, superior manufacturing capability, and overwhelming numerical strength. In such a scenario, Indian strategy would likely involve asymmetric responses, including opening other vulnerable fronts to stretch Chinese resources — a wise and necessary contingency.

Let’s also not overlook the strategic calculus: any hot conflict between India and China doesn't exist in isolation. Pakistan, long considered a "single front" concern for India, is now effectively a reinforced front due to its close military and strategic alignment with Beijing.

In summary, India deserves credit for its foresight and preparation, but there should be no illusions: any war with China would be high-cost, high-risk, and strategically brutal.

This female Chinese propagandist should take time off Twitter and go raise a few kids to prop up the falling population of China.

What do you mean by "failing population"? Are you confusing China with Japan?:inti

China has over 1.4-billion people.

China's population has been declining for 3 years now and is expected to accelerate through this century.

No wonder female foreigners feel unsafe visiting India. It's because of backward-minded people like these. This pendu wouldn't dare crack this silly joke to a Chinese woman's face, but he wants to act all macho online. :inti

Did she hit a nerve so badly that you had to stoop low and tell her to go raise kids? How old are you, seriously? Pretty sure, women around you do not feel safe. :inti

I think post #34 shows why rape is a huge problem in India. :inti

So asking a Chinese woman propagandist who constantly posts racist stereotypes about Indians to go raise kids of her own is the equivalent of sexual assault?

Barking dogs seldom bite..as the adage goes..non issues can be ignored...juvenile claims to be shut up on..last I saw Taiwan is a thriving democracy and China is claiming taiwan for decades....paper tiger..to be treated as such

They are facing a real population collapse . Even UN predicts them to be reduced to 600 odd million people by 2100. And UN projections are optimistic which keep getting downgraded every year.

There's no way China can pursue expansionist policies with that future.
