Is the Indian Test batting as good as the hype suggests?

Not too long ago, someone on PP wrote Rishab Pant is the most talented wicket keeper since Adam Gilchrist

Pujara after all these years has a Test record which is almost similar to Azhar Ali. With the kind of batsmen India possess, Pujara has underperformed massively.

I remember reading something along the lines of

Pujara is the new Dravid
Kohli is the new Tendulkar
Rahane is the new Laxman

You can add Murali Vijay as the new Sehwag as well

All Kohli's fault for not dispensing off these duds in time. However, when he himself is a dud for over 2 years now, how will he dare to drop other duds in the team?

Batting lost the game in the last test so what does india do? Drop and replace a couple of bowlers lol

That's what I pointed out on the match thread! Whose bright idea was it?

It must be a subcontinent thing because misbah is someone who also has loved doing this over the years
He ll easily replace a bowler after a bad game but never a failing batsman who seem to have a much longer rope than bowlers

Why bring Pakistan into it?

Indian test batting is at it's lowest in the last 25 years.

They have Kohli as the only great batsman in the side. It's a shame that India carried someone like Rahane for 10 years, a 40 averaging batsman.
They have no replacement whatsoever, other wise, never India would have carried a 40 averaging batsman. The only viable replacement is Vihari, who himself averages in the low 30's, I think.

Forgot about Nair, who averages in the 20's in Indians FC over the last 2 years. No way the guy can play international cricket when he is not fit to score even in domestic cricket.

Though no one hype our batting but its not as bad as you make it sound. We drew a match in Sydney by batting whole day, chased down record target in Gabba and doing relatively well in Eng too.

:kp

When there is no swing seam on offer, the best batting side on flat wickets

Other teams have been in the game because Indian batsmen have underperformed. Otherwise the results would have been more dominant

India desperately needs to recruit new batsmans in their middle order. You can't afford to carry three out of form middle order batsmans in the lineup. Kohli is irreplaceable as he captain of the side. But, India should get rid of both Rahane and Pujara.
Need to include Iyer, Vihari or Sundar in place of Rahane.
Give no. 3 slot to Agarwal or Gill replacing Pujara.
Bharat, Suryakumar, Easwaran, Gaikwad and Shaw are too good to ignore, they should play regularly against lesser teams.

Team should be like this after departure of Rahane and Pujara.

Rohit
Rahul
Gill/Agarwal
Kohli *
Vihari/Iyer
Rahane
Pant
Jadeja
Ashwin
Shami
Siraj
Bumrah

I would be super excited if India and Pakistan can come face to face in a test match at WTC finals. It will be an amazing feeling. We often have opinions on here that India is the pinnacle of test ladder so it would be worth a great deal to face them directly.

The only guy who is hyped by Indian fans in this batting line up is none other than Rishabh Pant. Nobody hypes other batsmen in this line up. Time has changed now. :inti

The only one I rate on current form is KL and, I can scarce believe I'm saying this, Rohit. He opened well in tough conditions in England

Does India have an unresolved batting problem in Tests?

I think Gill has to step up now. He is slowly becoming next KL Rahul. India need 40+ averaging batters in top 6 and presently 2 of the top 6 are on last leg.

Jaiswal has done well. Inconsistency and all is fine but it is his first tour and as opener, he got a big hundred already in this series.

Pant, for a keeper batsman is very very good and a genuine match winner. He will have his share of bad days when he will end up making a fool too but given what he brings to the table, one shouldn’t mind that.

KL Rahul has chosen the hard way to play test cricket by surviving and negotiating the new ball and then scoring runs or playing shots once the ball get softened. This traditional style of cricket doesn’t give a lot of success to everyone in modern era. He gets into his shell and simply not able to hit any purple patch. But still a decent player for overseas conditions.

Kohli and Rohit are pretty much done. On a flat wicket, Kohli can still produce a ton occasionally while Rohit at best would play cameo knocks there also.

For #7 spot, we have good choices and depending on conditions, we can play Jadeja or Sundar or Nitish Reddy.

jaiswal and pant are the only young world class players, but they are both aggressive dashers, you cant have a line up full of aggressive dashers, you need some technically competent compact batsmen too. sarfraz khan has a very unique technique, no idea how itd work out on bouncier pitches.

Indian batting was reliant heavily on Pujara and Pant.

As a matter of fact, without Pujara and Pant, India might not have won those 2 series in Australia.

Indian batters are just overhyped specially in SENA countries

After Rahane and Pujara they are on a sharp dicline.

Indian batting needs revamp in Tests. Every 10 years a major shuffle happens. The last time it happened was in 2012-2013. Many big names were dropped or retired. Its time now to drop the current big names. Rohit and Kohli. Its over for them. Unfortunately they both are money spinners. Lets see if Gambhir and selectors does after this Aus series.
