Is the magic of a hat-trick gone in the DRS era?

Hat-tricks used to be a fantastic occasion because they were spontaneous. Lightening quick or deceptively slow, they used to hammer the stumps setting the stadium ablaze in uproar. But now, when the third ball comes in and hits the pad or is caught behind, the batsman reviews, the audience waits, the spectators wait, and than it's revealed to be OUT. The adrenaline that was pumping for the bowler has cooled off and instead of jumping up and down, he's sipping on his drink in the meantime. A prime example would be the Peter Siddle hat-trick. The DRS has made the hat-trick a tedious and a painful process to watch removing the joy in it for both the bowler and viewer.

Yeah the DRS has also removed the other "Joys" that we were told were integral part of the game ... like Bucknor mugging teams singlehandedly. Or a Darrel Hair or Bowden. Iam sure you loooved it when such muggery was ongoing I suppose ?

I think you have me confused with someone else... Furthermore, NO, I enjoy the DRS system because it removes biased decisions but it has taken away from the excitement of the hat-trick for me. Speaking of biased decisions and hat-tricks, :bhajji

I will actually give up a lot more than the Hat-trick excitement to have the current DRS ... now if they completely take away the Umpires call and go strictly by the technology ... I would be so happy that I wouldnt know what to do. Sorry you have no sympathy from me.

Wasn't asking for your sympathy. I actually don't know where you would get the authority to forgive me or not. DRS has a lot more to improve on such as umpire's call but that is a separate discussion. Hat-tricks are not the same as they used to be and Usain Bolt himself would attest to that.

sarcasm fail :(

yep they are not because it is no longer possible to have Aquib Javed esque hat trick. Are you trying to say that you would rather have the excitment of a hattrick even if it involved howlers ?

Sarcasm or not is your opinion.
Howlers have won matches and series. I would rather have a tail-ender get out to a howler than wait 10 minutes for a caught behind referral.

Convince me how that is fair and no it does not take 10 mins. More like 2-3 minutes.

Never said it was fair.
It takes 8-10 minutes because they usually have drinks called while awaiting the decision.
DRS should be used to prevent terrible decisions.
DRS should not be used to prolong simple decisions.

Infact I love the high drama when important decisions are reviewed and the public goes on a nail biting spree. Example: Tendulkars review in WC S/F.

Then you have no case.

I does not take that long you are simply exaggerating. But it does feel like it is taking for ever due to the excitement.

Tendulkar was not facing a Hat-Trick. I think you have forgotten what the purpose of this thread was.

When have I said DRS should not be used against howlers? You really do know how to make an argument out of thin air.

And how do you suppose we selectively use DRS ? Who gets to decide if it was a howler or not ?

Only the umpires can decide if a batsman is out or not.
DRS needs to get rid of umpire's call.
The thread was NOT about how to improve DRS.

the DRS was introduced because it became very very obvious that the umpires couldnt accurately and consistently decide if a batsman was out or not-out .... the 2 points are not mutually exclusive.

at this point I dont even know what you are trying to discuss. You see the need for DRS but yet you dont want it used if there is a hat trick involved? is that what you are trying to suggest ?

The DRS should be used a last resort. Not to clarify a decision.
I have stated it multiple times and I will do so once again. I believe that DRS takes away from the excitement of a hat-trick and it should be implemented against horrible decisions. There is no discussion here and it is evident you are only arguing for the sake of arguing.

I hate it. Moments like that wait age you fast!
But we need DRS Tusker

I don't get why people don't realize this mentality is the big problem and creates bigger issues. It's MUCH tougher to decide the difference between a mistake and a 'horrible mistake' than it is to just correct all mistakes.

And if you agree that you can or should correct huge mistakes, there's 0 reasons why we shouldn't correct small ones also, because ultimately those are unjust as well.

The batsmen can tell if there is a howler. Just ask Ponting after his helmet was struck and he was given caught behind.

We are going to leave this to the batsmens good conscience ? And only if it is the hattrick wkt? Seriously ?
