Is the T20 World Cup 2026 in India/Sri Lanka going to be the best T20 World Cup so far?

idk this is the first time a World Cup has felt like just another regular tournament. The excitement and prestige just aren’t there. I think it’s mostly because this is the 4th T20 World Cup in the last six years, which makes the whole thing feel overdone and a bit diluted.

Bangladesh in this group would have caused havoc for England, and it would have been as entertaining a group as Group D.

ICC really shot itself in the foot with this one.
Bangladesh was in their best T20 form ever prior to this tournament. Beat Srilanka , Pakistan, Afganistan, West Indies, Ireland in T20 series in their last encounter.
Yes I agree this group would have been a very entertaining one.

Agree.

Too many World Cups.

There are 6 ICC events every 4 years. A complete mockery.

No T20 world cup will ever have the wow factor of the 2007 world cup but then that's just me. It under promised and over delivered not only with cricket quality but also with its future impact.

Expanding the T20 world cup to 20 teams takes the spice of the first round & if an upset takes place, the next round becomes boring and one-sided. So while one wants to support an underdog, supporting an underdog also in some way lowers the entertainment factor of the tournament long-term. There are also matches like Oman vs. Italy that only people who are playing fantasy competitions or are into sports betting will tune into.

Lastly, crowd is what makes sport feel great. Tuned into the WI vs Afg match today for the last couple overs of the regular innings and the empty chairs just reduced the spectacle. It's a bad look for the sports that whenever this game will be brought up in reruns & highlights, the viewers will miss the electric atmosphere of a full-house.

Keeping aside all the off-field politics and official gymnastics by the BCCI, ICC, and PCB, and looking purely at the teams and matches so far, I think this could turn out to be the best World Cup, rivaling the 2007 T20 World Cup. The matches in Sri Lanka have been good so far as well. :inti
But you can't say anything until guys like Jay Shah are there...can spoil any great stuff

it isn't a world cup there were 4 in 5 years from 07-12 then only 2 in 8 years... International t20 trophy would be a better name.

No it is a tainted world cup. No amount of on field action can save it from this and we can't seperate the disgraceful behaviour of BCCI and ICC from the onfield cricket in such a simple way.

It is like stepping into a garden where a sewage pipe has leaked. Sure the roses may still be nice to look at, but you can't admire the beauty with the stench of crap nearby.

Indian sewage has leaked over the beautiful game of cricket.

Fully agree. It’s why England is by far the best place to hold ICC tournaments. You have enough of a India/Pakistan/Bangla/Afghan diaspora for their games to be attended. There are enough Aussie and Saffer expats that their games are attended and same for SL. Back in the day you would get a number of Windies fans from descendants of the Windrush generation, albeit that that attendance has now declined. And ofcourse you have the home team England. Thus, in terms of atmosphere, the best ICC tournaments are in England.

The tournament has been off to a great start primarily because many associate nations have punched above their weight so far and we have had an ATG game yesterday.

Come 15th Feb, and the grand daddy of all rivalries will light up the tournament to another level.

Too bad its not goign to be played in India in front of 100,000 cricket mad Sanatanis.

I also think England is the best venue for an ICC event. The vibe is great.

Matches have been great. Pitches have not been ultra flat and there's been help for bowlers which has bridged the gap between the stronger teams and the weaker teams

Totally agree with this and not just because i live in England! Aside from the risk of the weather it really is a no brainer. A couple of years ago there was talk of hosting an Asia Cup in England. I think that is a brilliant idea with big communities from all the teams and local interest, it would be a huge success.

As for this world cup, there was literally zero build up. All the pre tournament comms were dominated by the treatment of Bangladesh and then Pakistan boycotting India. Even now in the midst of the tournament there is little coverage or hype about it in England at least. But the cricket has been exciting and good to watch. Good to see the associate nations putting up a real fight.

Rain has ruined so many games in England.. SA is the best place to hold tournaments.

South Africa is good but you can't get a similar vibe in South Africa that you get in England. Games in England just feel lively.

Also, most games do not get rained out in England. 2019 WC had just 1 washout I think.

It is not just about rain. It is also about the vibe. England have many people from different countries. It feels like a home away from home when it comes to cricket.

Yeah, England is the best place to both play and watch cricket. :inti

Tbh, imagine if Bangladesh was playing instead of Scotland.

We would have had another group of death type situation.

But, BCCI deprived us from that level of excitement and its sad. @sweep_shot Always miss you

Many Associates have done wonderfully well, and there’s been at least one all time classic game (top 5 ever Imo).

So it’s a great start, better than many I can recall.

The most useless cricket team Ban.. good thing they arr not in this WC. We haven't missed anything. Considering the opportunities and the back up they have received over the past 25 years- such an underwhelming performance. Other Associate nations with much limited resources have performed better Afg being a prime example and USA will get there soon as well hehe!!

This WC has been pretty good with Associates producing close interesting finishes. I actually liked the 2022 WC in Aus.. and the 2024 one too as there were low scoring thrillers.. and for the fact that NYC built a modular cricket stadium in 5 months on raw land - that was an amazing engineering feat..I was sceptical but boy they pulled off an amazing construction feat..

Yeah Ind was scared and thats why.. Jeez- the conspiracy theories here lol 😂
Take back my comments.. ICC should be doing much better..and Namibia have floodlights at their home venues so all the more pertinent they get better facilities to train..

This is disgusting.
Yes this is disgusting.. no civic sense and this applies to all SC nations Ind Pak Ban and to a lesser extent SL.. I will never watch a cricket match in any SC stadiums.. Aud and Eng are amazing stadiums to watch cricket and their hospitality viewing premium suites are simply top notch.

Yeah, England is the best place to both play and watch cricket. :inti
I would put Aus. over Eng. in terms of watching cricket. Their stadium infrastructure is very good, along with food choices etc.

I am saying Aus. stadiums are good only in terms of the cricket universe. Not comparing them to NFL, MLB ones, which I tend to while going to sporting events in other countries.

Nothing compares to World Cups in Australia and England. The whole vibe is just elite!

I personally feel that the typical hype around a WC is missing this time around. Maybe its just me

For me 2007 2009 and 2011 were best ones

Nothing comes close to excitement that we used to had for WC that time

Too many T20 WCs nowadays it doesn't feel like the same vibe of those days

Haha.
Kicked out. That team doesn't even deserve a test status but all thanks to late jagmohan dalmiya.

Bangladesh was, is and will remain a minnow.

:klopp :kp

Well well well.

came back again to hold our foot to convince Pakistan about India vs Pakistan match- your bread and butter 🧈!!

Now you are telling that you kicked us!!

That is not true and you know it. Bangladesh thought by making absurd demands, ICC and BCCI will accomodate them. However, they forgot they are Bangladesh and a perennial minnow in world cricket. ICC obviously tried to reason with them but when they refused to listen, they immidiately repalaced them with Scotland. So in a sense they been kicked out.

WT20 is entering its second week. I dont think anyone even remembers BD is not playing, let alone missing them.

You do realize right that Bangladesh is a forever minnow in world cricket. Forgetting aukat is something that was not required, especially now that your govt has denied boycotting.

The first 2 were the best ones.
They had the atmosphere and novelty factor.
Now it's all too dissected.
