I was thinking that PSL should have a 50 over format as well to help us find proper one day players as well and those who might have some potential in test cricket as well , T20 tournament is not the best criteria for ODI format selection.

I think they should hold a PSL 50 over tournament as well , it would not have to consist of international players and it wouldn't have to be a long tourney either , all matches should be hosted in Pakistan

I have spoken about this idea too some friends some agree and some disagree regardless I would like to here Pakpassion forum posters insight on this since you guys are the most knowledgable cricket fans I have seen

Cheers

don't they already have a 50 over tournament?

i guess if you marketed it as a psl 50 over tourny then it would get more viewers than the average 50 over tournament

you could still have international players if the money is right

wouldn't be a bad idea tbh

This would be something new for sure, but do you think there are chances of investors wanting to invest so much time and money for this?

It wouldn't have to be a big tournament pretty much keep the same players and team names only thing is if they don't want to invest on forging players they won't have just deluxe some players that are available or that are from the region , it would still be a PSL brand but 50 over tournament , one of my friend suggested rather than doing it ever year for the 50 over they can do it every 2 years

This would be different from the Pakistan cup and if we have PSL style it will get better coverage and more following from fans

yeah but it doesn't have the same fan following

Really that's PCB's fault. They never market domestic tournaments like they market the PSL. They also choose to have the domestic tournaments at 1 or 2 venues at most, which won't attract many viewers because people will get tired of coming to watch. Oh and how can I forget the terrible camera and production quality. If they did it properly with home and away games, and actually marketed it, there would definitely be more viewership.

Even PSL isn't very competitive.

Just 20 overs.

And you want 50??? It will be worse than district cricket.

It's one of those ideas which seems obvious but no one thought of it forcefully enough. Well done OP.

The trick will be to make it into a marketable product side by side PSL. Will be great if some foreign players could come in too.

Who will they market? Khurram Manzoor?

Unless you have AB or Sammy or other international stars, spend that money on pitches instead of marketing.

As far as OP's question goes, yes PSL can do 50 over games. It's the eventual plan of IPL and they will start it first.

Thanks and yeah the marketing part would not be easy

I was not aware IPL is looking into making a 50 over tournament happen

The whole tournament is gonna take ages to finish especially if you have to play games in UAE.

Yeah noone will care, the reason these leagues work is because they're aimed at fans who want a quick, entertaining fix, which the small format of T20 gives them. 50-50 noone would care.

i think it be better if they held something in pakistan and marketed the hell out of it.

they can have Pakistan Vs Pakistan A Vs Pakistan B -- 50 over tournament

the best of the best

The suggestion was that the tournament wouldn't be a month a long maybe like a 2 week type thing and that's why I said no need for foreign players have the games in Pakistan just for the ODI tournament they idea is too see the talent we have in 50 format but if you link it with PSL have same team names and wtv you will get a fan base and players will get recognized

Why not even FC too? The international players shall only restrict to T20s though, so the domestic players in the squad not playing can showcase their skills in the OD and FC version and make a strong case for T20s selection.

Can be done but the tournament will have to be short and salaries offered need to be handsome.

And the use is?

Same Malik, Gul, Misbah, Sami and Akmal clan will be playing.

Those guys play PSL t20 format as well the use like the t20 is too find new players but in this case find new players for ODI format

Its actually a good idea , that would separate PSL from rest of the leagues .

Key would be how to condense all the games in short period of time. Format will be critical.

Good idea overall, here are some thoughts:
1. Teams will need to be less to have manageable duration. Perhaps Karachi gladiators (combined team of Quetta and karachi), Lahore Sultans (combo multan and lahore), Peshawar United (you get the idea).
2. Hold entirely in pakistan.
3. 1 to 2 foreign players max, more u 19 u 23 players.
4. Consider a 40 or 45 over format, to reduce duration, also to encourage modern odi game play approach for our batsmen.
5. Must have high quality broadcast, branding, marketing, etc, cannot be like the past domestic tournaments.
6. 2 games each on friday, sat, sunday in 2 or 3 cities. One morning game one day night. Can be home and away format. 1 game each Tuesday and wednesday. Rest Monday Thursday.
7. Not sure how big of an issue it is, but I feel most Pakistanis probably dont understand English. Why not introduce urdu commentary as an option? Have seen many other countries do it like south Africa recently had afrikaans option.
8. Keep set of free tickets, especially on weekdays. Rotate among local schools to have field day for one weekday game.
9. Later extend similar concept at school and under 19 level (3 regional teams, etc). Build on those foundations to extend some of the facilities, coaching, etc to school, college, club, under 19 players. Also serve as feeder to the odi psl, and t20 psl, eventually a team, and national team.
10. Smaller trial can be initiated with 2 team all stars game based on top psl players with inclusion of additional under 23 players to replace foreign players as 3 match odi series called psl all stars (north vs south or something sinilar...like Karachi Quetta Peshawar vs Islamabad multan Lahore)

One more thing, you could add a cap of only 1 or 2 players above 30 years.

Your spot on I would personally still keep the six teams and still make it a short tournament but agree with almost all the points you mentioned

To keep it in Pakistan whole tourney agree it's what I suggested too

Point number 2 to have 1 or 2 foreign players or even non and to include u 19 and u23 players agree their brother

Other point about high quality broadcast is very important if you are to get a fan base

Points 8 and 9 are spot on as well

I'm glad you took the time to share your opinion on this :)

I was thinking if they ever do a tournament like this what they should do is apply a rule were every players gets to player 1 or 2 games but everyone on the roster has to play a game . So in a roster of 15 all 15 players get to ply atleast one game personally I would say it should be atleast 2 so you can get more exposure
