'Went for Sehri, Meant to Return by Prayers': Howrah Man Shot Dead, Shooters Caught on CCTV

Howrah Shooting: A Howrah man, who went out for Sehri and was expected back by Fajr prayers, was shot dead. The tragic incident was captured on CCTV, raising shock and concern locally.

Howrah Shooting: A real estate promoter was shot dead early this morning under the jurisdiction of Golabari Police Station in Howrah, West Bengal. At around 4:00 a.m., miscreants opened fire on Shafik Khan, who was associated with a real estate website, in the Pilkhana Second Bye Lane area under Golabari Police Station. After being shot, he was rushed to Anand Kanan and then taken to Howrah District Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, tension gripped the Pilkhana area of Howrah. As soon as the police received information, officers from Golabari Police Station under Howrah City Police reached the spot and began an investigation.

Family members of the deceased said that Shafik was shot from behind when he stepped out of his house for sehri before offering prayers during the month of Ramadan. They stated that two youths were seen talking to him - one was engaged in conversation, while the other fired at him from behind, leaving him critically injured and bleeding.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, police have deployed additional forces in the area and cordoned off the crime scene. An investigation is underway, and based on CCTV footage, the attackers have been identified. A search operation has been intensified to nab them.

When contacted, Howrah City Police Commissioner Akash Meghbaria said over the phone that the incident occurred during an early-morning clash between two groups, during which Shafik was shot. The shooters are currently absconding, but efforts are on to arrest them. He added that Shafik sustained two bullet injuries. The entire incident is being thoroughly investigated, and the accused will be arrested soon.
"Around 4 AM in the morning a shooting was reported in this area. One person was injured, the doctors declared him dead after he was taken to the hospital. We have started the case, currently we're investigating all angles to figure out the shooter and others who maybe are involved," said the official.
The official said:

What did the victim do? He used to be a small businessman. This can be an outcome of old rivalry/enmity.

Could you recognise any of the criminals? Yes, to some extent. We know, we're still investigating. We're all here, patrolling and now we're trying to control it. Have controlled it. We're all. The car of the accused was put on fire. Now the situation is under control.

New anti-Muslim hate definition announced by government

The government has announced a new definition of anti-Muslim hate that includes violence, harassment and prejudicial stereotyping - as it insisted the move will not curtail free speech.

Ministers say it is a working definition and a "tool for government and organisations to better understand, measure, prevent and address anti-Muslim hostility".

Crucially, the definition is non-statutory - meaning it is advisory and has no legal backing.

Discrimination of someone due to their religion or belief is already unlawful under the Equality Act.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed told MPs that ministers had a duty to act against record levels of hate crime against Muslims, but that "you can't tackle a problem if you can't describe it".

He also denied the definition would interfere with freedom of speech or create "blasphemy laws by the back door".

Hate crimes against Muslims reported to police in England and Wales rose by almost a fifth in the year ending March 2025, to 3,199 offences.

The figure does not include incidents reported to Metropolitan Police due to changes in its recording system.

Jewish people faced the highest rate of hate crimes, according to the government figures, with 106 incidents per 10,000 population. Muslims were second, with 12 per 10,000 population.

In February last year, the government set up a working group, led by former Tory minister Dominic Grieve, to come up with a definition of anti-Muslim hatred or Islamophobia.

But Sky News learnt in October that ministers were moving away from the word "Islamophobia" and towards "anti-Muslim hostility".

Alongside the new definition, ministers have set out an accompanying text which says freedom of speech and expression are protected by law, which includes criticising or ridiculing a belief, including Islam.

"Portraying it in a manner that some of its adherents might find disrespectful or scandalous," is also legal, the text says.

What is the government's definition of anti-Muslim hostility?

Anti-Muslim hostility is intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts – including acts of violence, vandalism, harassment, or intimidation, whether physical, verbal, written or electronically communicated – that are directed at Muslims because of their religion or at those who are perceived to be Muslim, including where that perception is based on assumptions about ethnicity, race or appearance.

It is also the prejudicial stereotyping of Muslims, or people perceived to be Muslim including because of their ethnic or racial backgrounds or their appearance, and treating them as a collective group defined by fixed and negative characteristics, with the intention of encouraging hatred against them, irrespective of their actual opinions, beliefs or actions as individuals.

It is engaging in unlawful discrimination where the relevant conduct – including the creation or use of practices and biases within institutions – is intended to disadvantage Muslims in public and economic life.

Speaking in the Commons, shadow communities minister Paul Holmes said the definition risked "hindering legitimate criticism" - which Mr Reed rejected.

"We will not do what [the Conservatives] did and stand by and simply watch while Muslim communities face targeted abuse in ways that any decent country would consider to be absolutely intolerable," he replied.

Mr Reed announced the new definition as he unveiled a wider strategy on social cohesion.

The British Muslim Trust welcomed the move, with chairman Shabir Randeree saying it would "help guide institutions that have too often been too slow or too weak in their responses to incidents a tolerant and respectful country like ours must never accept".

The government is to also appoint a special representative on anti-Muslim hostility to engage with communities and help facilitate understanding and implementation of the definition.

Dar notes ‘alarming rise’ in Islamophobia, warns it worsens existing tensions and conflicts

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday noted the “alarming rise” in Islamophobia and warned that it exacerbates existing tensions and conflicts, threatening world peace.

He made the remarks in a statement issued on International Day to Combat Islamophobia, which is observed on March 15.

“In recent years, the alarming rise in Islamophobia has manifested in deeply troubling incidents across many parts of the world, including the desecration of the Holy Quran, attacks on women for wearing the hijab, vandalism of mosques, religious profiling, and the open expression of anti-Muslim hatred in public discourse and media,” Dar noted.

“Islamophobia exacerbates existing tensions and conflicts, creating a vicious cycle that threatens international peace and security,” he warned.

He reaffirmed, “On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we stand in solidarity with Muslims worldwide and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to combating prejudice, discrimination, hostility, and violence directed against Muslims.”

Dar highlighted that Pakistan, working closely with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), “played a crucial role in the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) historic decision to designate 15 March as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia”.

“This marked an important milestone in the international community’s efforts to promote harmony, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among religions, cultures, and civilisations,” he asserted.

Dar further noted that Pakistan also played a pivotal role in the adoption of another UNGA resolution aimed at strengthening international efforts to counter Islamophobia, including the request for the appointment of a United Nations special envoy to address this challenge.

Dar welcomed the appointment of Miguel Angel Moratinos as the UN special envoy to combat Islamophobia in May 2025, as well as the appointment of the special envoy of the OIC Secretary-General on combating Islamophobia in May 2024, “reflecting the growing international resolve to address this challenge in a coordinated and sustained manner”.

“Pakistan remains firmly committed to advancing international efforts to counter Islamophobia,” FM Dar reaffirmed.

He said Pakistan was working with the OIC member states and the UN special envoy on the development of a “UN Plan of Action that would provide a structured framework to better understand, prevent, and eliminate this challenge”.

“The international community must stand united in condemning Islamophobia while also addressing the structural conditions that allow it to flourish,” the deputy premier stressed.

“Pakistan calls upon all nations to undertake sustained efforts to promote mutual respect, dialogue, and understanding among communities, and to uphold the values of tolerance, dignity, and peaceful coexistence.”

Sack top Tory for calling Muslim Trafalgar Square prayers 'act of domination', says PM

Shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy had condemned the gathering of hundreds of Muslims led by London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, before they broke their Ramadan fast.

Sir Keir Starmer has called for a senior Conservative who said Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square was "an act of domination" to be sacked.

The prime minister described Nick Timothy's comments as "utterly appalling" and told Tory leader Kemi Badenoch that she should denounce his words and "sack him" as shadow justice secretary.

Speaking at prime minister's questions Sir Keir said he had never heard the Conservatives call out anything other than Muslim events, which led him to conclude "the Tory party has got a problem with Muslims".

Politics latest: Rayner warns Starmer Labour is 'running out of time'

But Ms Badenoch defended her shadow minister, saying he was "defending British values".

Mr Timothy posted a video of hundreds of Muslims praying in Trafalgar Square on Monday evening as they celebrated iftar, the meal that breaks the Ramadan fast.

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan hosted the event, and he could be seen praying with others and giving a speech in which he celebrated Jewish, Christian, Hindu and atheists who joined them.

Mr Timothy, who a chief of staff for Theresa May when she was PM, wrote: "Too many are too polite to say this but mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination.

"The adhan [call to prayer] - which declares there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination."

He said "these rituals" should be performed in mosques "but they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions".

"I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook," he added.

"It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn't happen again."

'London will always be a place for everyone'

Sir Sadiq hit back at Mr Timothy by posting pictures of Monday night's gathering along with photos in Trafalgar Square of crowds celebrating Christian Easter, Hindu Diwali, Sikh Vaisakhi and Jewish Hannukah.

"London is, and will always be, a place for everyone. #UnityOverDivision," he wrote on X.

Former Conservative attorney general Dominic Grieve described Mr Timothy's comments as a "very odd post from a Conservative who says he believes in freedom of expression under law and is a principal spokesman of the Free Speech Union".

He asked if he was advocating to "enact discriminatory legislation targeted at Muslims".

'Stop fanning flames of division'

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy told Mr Timothy to "stop fanning the flames of division" as he too pointed out Sikhs, Jews, Hindus and Christians "are all invited to mark religious festivals on Trafalgar Square by Sadiq Khan".

Lucy Powell, deputy leader of the Labour Party, called it "an extreme reaction" as she said people of all religions working together is the "real Britain, not the desperate hatred being whipped up here by a leading Tory".

Do you support mass prayers on streets in western nations?

It was given the Green light by the Authorities. Which is supported by the Government. Its only closet Islamophobic bufoons like Doggy Patel. Surely Doggerman Fishi Rishi and a few other Torries and Reform Corrupt MPs who are making a meal out of it.

do you have a problem withh mass prayers in a western country
Yes in public places like streets and alleys. Religion should be between 4 walls and we don’t want to be redirected to alternate routes just because it is prayer time for some.

No other religion does this in public in the west. Look at the video above. Not only praying in streets, but openly taunting the locals and daring them to stop them.

Then they wonder why there is Islamophobia. :mv

HEREDo you support mass prayers on streets in western nations?

Dear champ pal, mass prayer make no sense whatsoever. Particularly when they are said to be commanded by him who wants people to pray to him.

It is because human beings waste their time when they pray instead of thinking, planning, saying and doing what needs to be thought, planned, said and done for solving their problems.

Human mind works in a particular way which praises someone voluntarily only and only when it is impressed by someone or something by its creativity eg you see a nice building or a garden and you say wow, what a nice building or a garden or something. What a skilful builder or a gardener etc. If you put a gun to someone's head and tell him to praise you then, can we really call it praising? No.

You honestly request for something of someone only and only when you genuinely need it, not otherwise. So daily prayers commanded by God are clearly a hoax. Praying together as a crowd makes no sense because all people who are praying are not all impressed by something at the very same time nor are they in need or want of anything in particular because God has already provided all things for mankind for their fulfilling their needs and want and all mankind need to do is purposefully properly organise and regulate themselves into a purpose based proper human community and think, plan, say and do what needs to be thought, planned, said and done according to his provided purpose based proper guidance for mankind purposefully properly and all will be ok.

All these useless, time wasting, harmful and destructive beliefs and practices have been created, spread and maintained by dominant and leading, secular and religious people, their helpers, supporters and backers for fooling the masses in their human populations in the very name of God, so that that way they could use them for furthering their very own harmful and destructive agendas against humanity and pass on all the blames onto God.

It is because when people do not bother to prepare themselves purposefully properly for seeking, receiving, studying, accepting and acting upon their creator, sustainer and cherisher provided purpose based proper information about his creation and revelation for mankind purposefully properly, they are only exploited, manipulated, blackmailed and used abusively by each other. It is because God created mankind with differences so that they could help, support, and back up each other by their complementing each other purposefully properly but mankind instead use their God gifted advantages over each other against each other. The religious leaders only justify what dominant people do to undermined masses as God's will for them.

This is why all such secular and religious institutions must be replaced with actual God advised purpose based proper institutions so that humanity could have unity, peace, progress and prosperity for carrying out his provided purpose based proper program for mankind purposefully properly by accomplishing its goals according to his provided purpose based proper guidelines for mankind.

This is what actual islam is all about and this is what ummah actually means. Unfortunately there is no muslim ummah any more in the human world till mankind bring it about and maintain it purposefully properly. That needs very, very hard work and muslims rather pay lip service to islam, God and humanity than think, plan, say and do what needs to be thought, planned, said and done purposefully properly to put things right as they should be.

Muslims are most criminal people in the human world because they have not fulfilled their God assigned duty and responsibility about taking his message to whole of humanity purposefully properly so all people anywhere and everywhere in the human world are confused about God and humanity as to what God's purpose and plan actually is about mankind and how they can fulfil them as they should.

Hope this explains my point of view for you and rest of people on this forum otherwise visit HERE.

Meanwhile regards and all the best.

Islamophobia is a terrible term and we muslims need to demand that others stop using it. A phobia is a rational fear of something. People have phobia of spiders, heights, other things. Those phobias do not make them bad people, it's a rational fear. Islamophobia is coined by westerners and racists who hate islam but want to feel justified in their hatred so using the term "islamophobia" makes their hatred fear rational.

Use terms like anti-Muslim hate, or anti-Islam hate. Call it out for what it is. Don't use Islamophobia, it makes us seem weak, and hatred of us seem rational and reasonable.

Do Christians host their prayer meetings on the streets? Show me where they do it?

Any religion that brings their religious rituals on to busy streets must be lampooned.

In the videos I posted, you can clearly hear the Muslim man goading and threatening the western people to try and stop them. If it was a peaceful prayer, why should inflammatory slogans and speeches?

One has to be a special kind of clown to not notice what those street prayers are up to. They say it out loud in their speeches. :mv

"We will throw Pig meat in front of their home on Eid, let's see what they will do"Hindutva scum giving threats to Muslims on Eid This has become so normal in India and if Muslims retaliate, they'll play victim, while the muslims will face jail and a bulldozer.
