Isle of Man sex education suspended amid lessons complaints

Sex education on the Isle of Man has been suspended amid reports of controversial lessons at a Peel school.

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) said it had appointed independent external investigators to look into the concerns.

Parents of some Year 7 students at Queen Elizabeth II High School have complained of "graphic" teaching.

But in a letter the head teacher warned them of "inaccurate information" being spread on social media.

The BBC has contacted the school for a comment.

A DESC statement said "the safeguarding and wellbeing" of children was the department's "main priority and people are urged to refrain from speculation, whilst the facts are established".

It said "malicious accusations and comments" had been shared online.

One parent, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, said her 11-year-old son was subjected to "obscene" information.

She said he told her about one lesson in particular when he was taught in class that there were more than 70 genders.

When he disputed this, believing there to be two, he was sent out of the room.

However, the school told the parent he was removed from the lesson for the way in which he spoke to teachers, rather than for what he said.

Vice Chairmain of Marown Commissioners, Eliza Cox, has also raised concerns after speaking to more than a dozen parents.

She said they told her that students had been embarrassed to discuss some of the lessons with their parents, relaying "graphic details about intercourse".

She said: "These parents had no idea that this was being taught to their children, they weren't able to prepare them.

"The children are actually quite traumatised."

A new curriculum on the subject was introduced in September, however all lessons have now been suspended for an investigation to take place.

However if the reports are correct then there has been a failure of governance in that school by allowing an untrained person to teach. The head teacher has requested a government quiet which she is cooperating with.

It's not about being liberal. Thing is Colleges and Universities are not segregated and kids coming from private Islamic Schools can get lost in the new found freedom. I think it's more important for parents to be involved in their kids day to day activities rather than what school they attend. You can still get an islamic education after school.

Islamic/Catholic schools don't just have religious contents. These institutions are fully accredited and also teach regular courses. At my children primary school we were given the govt Guidelines and its upto the school the path they take. You can do the bare minimum or more. Our primary decided to do the bare minimum. A friend of mine was so so disturbed what his primary school was going to do he took his children out and homeschools them.

The RSE Guidelines are online but parents have to be engaged and can't just fall asleep on the job. We had a massive non white cohort and the majority were on favour of the bare minimum. Anything above that would have given the board a headache. They rightly decided that wasn't a battle worth fighting for.

In high school I have opted my son out of sex education as I have already had those discussions and he won't learn anything productive in the school sessions. We have the option to opt out. If you do not find out why as you can do this.

The very fear of a teenager becoming pregnant - in the absence of the pill - serves as a discipline barrier and control against sexual desires among teenagers.

If we really want to teach teenagers about sex, then we should teach them about STIs, and how STIs are more prevalent among homosexuals, some of which, can be fatal. Or teach them that using certain human orifices during sex is unatural.

My kids primary school works alongside the parents.

However in another school in the next catchment area the parents were told that if their primary 1 boy came in and said they were a girl the teachers would start addressing him as "she" and they were under no obligation to let their kids know.

Primary teachers should not have this much authority over children. They do a fantastic job but are usually not the most clever ( hence why they chose that as a career). I don't want/need some barely educated hippy teaching my kid right/wrong and imposing their morality on them. They should teach them what happens when you mix two colours and the times tables at that age.

Children are being taught sex education lessons that have “no basis in any reputable scientific biological explanation”, the head of the schools regulator Ofsted has warned.

Pupils in some secondary schools have been told there are 100 genders, while children are being taught gender fluidity as fact in some major academy trusts and independent schools, an investigation by The Telegraph has found.

Amanda Spielman, chief inspector of Ofsted, told this newspaper she has warned the Government that the current relationships and sex education (RSE) guidance places no limit on what can be taught.

She warned that Ofsted is currently powerless to sanction schools teaching inappropriate material.

Her intervention comes after The Telegraph revealed widespread evidence of “age-inappropriate” sex education materials in schools.

A dossier of evidence gathered by Conservative MP Miriam Cates was presented to Rishi Sunak last week, which led to the Prime Minister ordering a review of the Department for Education’s (DfE) RSE guidance.

Pupils in Years Seven and Eight at schools overseen by The Kemnal Academies Trust, one of the largest academy trusts in the South and East of England, have been taught using a diagram of a “gender unicorn” - showing sliding scales of male, female and other identities, alongside spectrums of gender expression and sex assigned at birth.

Schools have always done that. I had a Christian service every week in school and we were taught RE too. We were also taught science which is another belief system.

Educate yourself. The people who have biological defects are a tiny negligible fraction. Hijras are mostly biologically male. Read the last line in the ruling.
