Iran shot down Israeli drones on northern Salmas border, its state media claims

Iran said it had downed Israeli drones that crossed its northwestern border near Salmas, the state-affiliated Nour News reported Saturday.

“The Islamic warriors succeed to bring down the Israeli drones that have crossed our border,” the news report said. CNN has approached Israeli forces for comment.

Drones have been a key element of Israel’s attack on Iran, which it launched in the early hours of Friday morning. Israeli security officials said that ahead of the attack Israel had established a base for launching explosive drones inside Iran, and the drones were later used to target missile launchers near Tehran.

Iranian media claims two Israeli jets downed, pilot captured; Israel rejects report

Iran's air defense has downed two Israeli Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets as well as a large number of micro aerial vehicles, capturing a female Israeli pilot, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The Iranian army has not officially confirmed the report.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rejected the report. In a statement, IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee called the allegations "completely baseless."

The statements come amid heightened tensions following Israel's large-scale strikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, which have raised fears of broader regional escalation.

Iran's state-run Press TV reported that Iranian air defenses had shot down an Israeli drone near the Fordow nuclear facility, located close to the central city of Qom.

Early Friday, Israel carried out airstrikes on Tehran and other cities across Iran.

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's UN envoy, said that at least 78 people were killed as a result of Israel's strikes, while 320 others were injured, most of whom were civilians.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri, Chief Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Hossein Salami, Gholam-Ali Rashid, commander of Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, and Commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Division Amir Ali Hajizadeh were killed in the Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

Late Friday, Israel reported that Iran launched nearly 100 missiles toward central and northern Israel in two massive barrages, causing significant damage and injuring 41 people, two of whom are in critical condition.

I think Iran's military capabilities have been seriously overestimated and I'm actually shocked by the impunity with which Israel has successfully attacked high value targets with such ease.

There must be quite a few turncoats who absolutely hate the Mullah regime even more than they hate Israel/NATO and are providing Israel with sensitive intel.
Intelligence failures occur globally, and there have been numerous recent examples:

  • The Pahalgam attacks in IOK: Where was Indian intelligence?
  • India's attack on Pakistan: Where was Pakistani intelligence?
  • Ukraine's recent attack deep within Russia, a superpower: Where was Russian intelligence?
Similarly, consider the 9/11 attacks in the US, the London and Madrid bombings, and many others.

Iran is a completely isolated country, subjected to decades of sanctions, and there could be traitors within its ranks aiding these failures. Remember, Iran is not merely fighting Israel; it is contending with the USA, whose technological prowess is unmatched today. The USA supports Israel in every detail. Therefore, while Iran can be blamed for its failures, it is also essential to consider the potential reasons behind them.

A very interesting few days.

Iranian defensive capabilities were shown to be nothing but offensive capabilities were surprising. Israel was hit like never before.

Israeli once again confirmed it's ability to deeply penetrate nearby countries with intelligence assets and launch audaciously bold attacks.

Indians showed the full capability of Indian dome. Despite many tough moments during the last few days they were able to launch phul support attacks on behalf of Israel and even forgave Israelis giving Kashmir to Pakistan. Phul sapport capabilities are currently being replenished after a tough night.

GUYS, PLEASE BE SENSIBLE. THIS IS NOT A JOKE

TALK ABOUT THE TOPIC INSTEAD OF JOKING ABOUT THIS CONFLICT.

There is a difference between intelligence failures in some of the examples you have quoted and this .

Israel has allegedly struck bunkers of nuclear scientists and military command/sensitive areas like uranium enrichment .

That's absolutely damning.

I have not said the reasons for this are invalid. I get the impact of sanctions /isolation etc.

Mossad/ CIA and Other other agency agent's were already in Iran long before the attacked .they send the exact location of HVT.

Even they used some drones to attack Iran from within Iran.

Say's Israel.

We don't need to believe it.

It's very clear Israel/US want a regime change in Iran.

Satanyahu is repeatedly saying that whatever we are doing is good for the people of Iran

‘Drop Israel’: How military escalation with Iran divides Trump’s base

After taking the oath of office for his second term in January, United States President Donald Trump said he would push to “stop all wars” and leave a legacy of a “peacemaker and unifier”.

But six months in, missiles are flying across the Middle East after Israel attacked Iran, risking an all-out regional war that could drag US troops into the conflict.

The Israeli strikes on Iran, which Trump has all but explicitly endorsed, are now testing the president’s promise to be a harbinger of peace.

They are also dividing his base, with many right-wing politicians and commentators stressing that unconditional support for Israel is at odds with the “America First” platform on which Trump was elected.

“There is a very strong sense of betrayal and anger in many parts of the ‘America First’ base because they have truly turned against the idea of the US being involved in or supporting any such wars,” said Trita Parsi, executive vice president at the Quincy Institute, a US think tank that promotes diplomacy.

“They have largely turned sceptical of Israel, and they strongly believe that these types of wars are what cause Republican presidencies to become failures — and what causes their broader domestic agenda to be compromised.”

‘Drop Israel’

Several conservatives questioned the Israeli strikes on Friday, warning that the US must not be dragged into a war that does not serve its interests.

Top of Form

Influential conservative commentator Tucker Carlson — seen as a major figure in Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement — said the US should not support the “war-hungry government” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“If Israel wants to wage this war, it has every right to do so. It is a sovereign country, and it can do as it pleases. But not with America’s backing,” the Tucker Carlson Network morning newsletter read on Friday.

It added that a war with Iran could “fuel the next generation of terrorism” or lead to the killing of thousands of Americans in the name of a foreign agenda.

“It goes without saying that neither of those possibilities would be beneficial for the United States,” the newsletter said. “But there is another option: drop Israel. Let them fight their own wars.”

Republican Senator Rand Paul also cautioned against war with Iran and slammed hawkish neoconservatives in Washington.

“The American people overwhelming[ly] oppose our endless wars, and they voted that way when they voted for Donald Trump in 2024,” Paul wrote in a social media post.

“I urge President Trump to stay the course, keep putting America first, and to not join in any war between other countries.”

Right-wing Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene also sent a message suggesting that she opposes the strikes. She has previously cautioned Trump against attacking Iran based on Israeli assertions that Tehran is about to acquire a nuclear weapon.

“I’m praying for peace. Peace,” she wrote on X. “That’s my official position.”

While many of Israel’s supporters have cited the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, the government in Tehran has long denied pursuing a nuclear weapon. Trump’s own intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, testified in March that the US “continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon”.

Charlie Kirk, a key Republican activist and commentator who is a staunch Israel supporter, also voiced scepticism about engaging in a war with Iran.

“I can tell you right now, our MAGA base does not want a war at all whatsoever,” Kirk said on his podcast. “They do not want US involvement. They do not want the United States to be engaged in this.”

Israel’s attacks

Hours before Israel started bombing Iran on Friday — targeting its military bases, nuclear facilities and residential buildings — Trump said that his administration was committed to diplomacy with Tehran.

“ Look, it’s very simple. Not complicated. Iran can not have a nuclear weapon. Other than that, I want them to be successful. We’ll help them be successful,” Trump said at a news conference on Thursday.

A sixth round of denuclearisation talks between US and Iranian officials was set to be held in Oman on Sunday.

Nevertheless, on Friday, Trump told reporters he had known about Israel’s attacks in advance. He did not indicate he had vetoed the bombing campaign, though Secretary of State Marco Rubio did describe Israel’s actions as “unilateral”.

Instead, Trump put the onus for the attacks on Iran, saying its officials should have heeded his calls to reach a deal to dismantle the country’s nuclear programme.

“I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come,” Trump wrote in a social media post.

Parsi said that, at the outset, Trump wanted to reach a deal with Iran, but his demands for Tehran to end uranium enrichment led to a deadlock in the talks.

“Instead of pursuing the negotiations in a reasonable way, he adopted the zero enrichment goal, which predictably would lead to an impasse, which predictably the Israelis used to push him towards military strikes and escalation,” he told Al Jazeera.

Parsi added that he believed Trump engaged in deception over the past week by pushing diplomacy while knowing that the Israeli strikes were coming.

“Trump deliberately made statements in favour of diplomacy, in favour of not having Israel attack, leading everyone to think that, if there is an attack, it would happen after the six rounds of talks on Sunday,” he said. “Instead, it happened sooner.”

But a key part of Trump’s base has been a segment of the right wing that questions the US’s unconditional support for Israel.

“They really are representative of a solid constituency within the Republican Party, especially if you look at younger individuals,” said Jon Hoffman, research fellow in defence and foreign policy at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.

Hoffman pointed to a recent Pew Research Center survey that suggested 50 percent of Republicans under the age of 50 have an unfavourable view of Israel.

“Among the electorate itself, the American people are sick and tired of these endless wars,” he told Al Jazeera.

Foreign policy hawks who favour military interventions dominated the Republican Party during the presidency of George W Bush, who launched the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan in the aftermath of the attacks on September 11, 2001.

But those two conflicts proved to be disastrous. Thousands of US soldiers were killed, and many more were left with lasting physical and psychological scars. Critics also questioned whether the wars advanced US interests in the region — or set them back.

The nation-building project in Iraq, for instance, saw the rise of a government friendly to Iran and the emergence of groups deemed to be a threat to global security, including ISIL (ISIS).

In Afghanistan, meanwhile, the Taliban returned to power in 2021, almost exactly two decades after the group was ousted by US forces. The US-backed Afghan government quickly crumbled as American troops withdrew from the country.

During his campaign for re-election in 2024, Trump tapped into the anger that the two conflicts generated. On multiple occasions, he sketched an alternative timeline where, if he had been president, the collapse of the Afghan government would have never occurred.

“We wouldn’t have had that horrible situation in Afghanistan, the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country,” Trump said at one October 2024 rally in Detroit.

The US president also slammed his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris for her alliance with Dick Cheney, who served as Bush’s vice president, and his daughter Liz Cheney, criticising them as “war hawks”.

“Kamala is campaigning with Muslim-hating warmonger, Liz Cheney, who wants to invade practically every Muslim country on the planet,” Trump told another crowd in Novi, Michigan. He added that Dick Cheney “was responsible for invading the Middle East” and “killing millions”.

But critics say Trump’s posture towards the Israeli strikes in Iran risks embroiling him in his own Middle East conflict.

Hoffman, for instance, pointed to the closeness of the US-Israel relationship and the persistence of officials within the Republican Party who have been pushing for conflict with Iran for decades, like Senator Lindsey Graham.

“There is a tremendous risk of the United States being dragged into this war,” Hoffman said.

Iranians are getting mauled

Israeli airforce is totally dominating

Whilst look what happened to India they had to ground their airforce after the initial attack.

They then sent the same israeli drones which are causing havoc in iran and in pakistan civilians were shooting down herons and harpies with normal guns

Not sure how appropriate these comparisons with Pakistan are. While the performance of PAF in 2019 and 2025 was laudable, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Pakistan has never won a conventional war with India, the military through a tightly controlled media grossly exaggerates its achievements, and is still trying to tame militant groups (who've killed tens of thousands) on its soil.

Pakistan had a strong military alliance with the US for decades, and in recent years benefited from major Chinese sponsorship.

Iran meanwhile has been frozen out of the international economic system for decades, has been politically isolated, and virtually stand alone.

Few countries in the world would fare well on the battlefield after having its hands tied behind its back for so long.

Iran is a proud dictatorship but not a smart dictatorship. Like you rightly pointed out despite the isolation, Iran has proudly stood on its own. It’s praise worthy. But they’re haven’t been smart enough with their geopolitical stance and handling of affairs with global powers. Still Iranians remain proud nationalists who can hold their head high for everything they have achieved despite the blockade.

Pakistani dictatorship on the other hand has shamefully sold themselves nation for its own benefits. They have ruined the image of Pakistan worldwide as a begging bowl nation of a mercenary armada who sell themselves to the highest bidder. But they’re extremely cunning. They have navigated through the geopolitical landscape of the world beautifully to ensure they can ask anyone for a loan or weapons anytime.

I pray for Iranians. I hope they don't suffer much. The terrorists israelis are worst of the lot along with a certain country (mera bharat).

These israeli terrorists must pay for their sins. Iran must not remain silent. Iranians fully support their government for the appropriate response.

People are crazy(indians) if they think Iranians are not supporting their government in this war. They have already seen more than enough in 2 days. Countless numbers of children and women have died in the hands of terrorist israel.

I have many Iranian friends and they all are behind their country and showing their support by uploading the country's flag.
They might not like Iranian government much but they are supporting their country.

I'm not interested in debating every geopolitical decision Iran have made since their revolution. However let it be clear - Iran signed a nuclear deal in 2015 with the US and other global powers.

The IAEA found them compliant with the terms of the deal.

However the orange piece of human excrement, egged on by his fanatical pro-Israel advisers, withdrew in 2018 because his ego couldn't tolerate accepting an agreement signed by his predecessor.

History and facts show who violated the nuclear agreement, and whose hands are covered with blood.

Israeli military says nine Iranian nuclear scientists killed

The IDF says that it has killed nine Iranian nuclear scientists and experts. Previously, the Israeli military said it killed six during the initial wave of strikes it launched against Iran on Thursday night.

Israel now says the nine were killed "at the beginning" of the operation.

Separately, an Israeli military official has said the Esfahan and Natanz nuclear sites have been significantly damaged in strikes, according to reports from the Reuters news agency.

The official tells Reuters that over 150 targets in Iran have been attacked. Most drones and missiles that have been launched towards Israel have been intercepted, the official says.

Question is isreal still hasn't destroyed Irans nuclear stuff deep underground they might need b2 bombers for that which they don't have??, once this settles down what stops Iran from building one within a few months??

When/if Isreal bombs irans oil and gas infrastructure, does Iran bomb oil refineries across the middle east, does oil go to $150 a barrel?

America is literally helping Israel down missiles which Iran is attacking them with.

I am sorry but if you are so dumb you believe Trump who lies with every second of his breath and is so corrupt can be bought by anyone. you deserve to be duped. He is in the pocket of Arab nations and Israel and US has a major hand in this attack and escalation which was planned for a long time.

Nature is really unkind towards stupidity, gullible people don't survive long. Lying conmen like Trump have forever taken advantage of stupidity.

Exactly. And many Muslims even voted for Trump and some like the above poster are still duped by his lies.
Whoever said US is not helping Israel ? Dont be so naive and dumb and pretend that politicians are angels. Biden or obama or kamala are no angels as well. Well, the ME trip has forced saudi qatar syria just to have some token paper opposition to israel attacking iran. If Iran was dumb to believe that no attacks ere gonna happen, their generals deserve it. The US has been asking its staff to leave the region for days. US embassies getting notices etc. In a way, this will set back Iran years back form making a nuclear weapon. The Pak posters here and you must be happy as they are the only Islamic nation to have a nuclear bomb ! Duped by a politician's lies - well guess what , every politician lies ! If you believe otherwise, I have got the Brooklyn bridge to sell you.

Regime change: The Mullah regime's and raison d'être was death to America and death to Israel. Fifty years on, iran has suffered way more than america or israel. Eventually, the regime will fall, and whoever comes in their place will want Western benefactors. You remove the Iranian regime, and the entire Middle East is under Israeli and Saudi control. this is the weakest and most isolated ther regime has ever been, they hoping that military embarassment will weaken local support for them.

Both are disgraceful nations - India as well as Israel.

Frankly Iranians as pussies... they are only good for getting others to fight for them be it Iraqis, Lebanese, Syrians, Yemenis or the Shias from Pakistan.

They are found wanting all over the place.... A country that is 1500 km away is attacking you via the air at will. All Iran can do is respond with hit and miss missiles with the stockpiles running out eventually. Who is going to re-supply it?

Now their folly of acting against Pakistani interests will bite them in the backside in helping India to the kill thousands of Pakistanis via TTP and BLA.

Is India going to help them... No.

Israel-Iran War: Key Developments and Live Updates:

Retaliatory Strikes and Casualties:

* Iran launched waves of missiles in retaliation for Israeli strikes targeting Iran's nuclear program. Explosions were reported in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Tehran.

* The Israeli military (IDF) claims to be "still striking" Iran, having hit over 150 targets in the past 24 hours, including a nuclear site in Isfahan, and surface-to-air missile infrastructure in Tehran.

* Iranian state media reported 60 people, including 20 children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a residential building in Tehran. The BBC has not independently verified this figure.

* In Israel, officials stated three people were killed and dozens injured by Iranian retaliatory strikes. Seven Israeli soldiers were "lightly injured" after an Iranian missile hit central Israel, but have since been released from hospital.

* A resident of Rishon LeZion, outside Tel Aviv, described widespread destruction in their neighborhood, with houses damaged, cars destroyed, and two neighbors killed by an Iranian missile strike.

* A high school student in Tehran expressed fear and a desire to leave Iran due to the continuous explosions. Supermarket shelves in Tehran are emptying as residents hoard goods, and streets are quieter.

Military Claims and Strategies:

* Israel: The IDF claims to have killed the head of intelligence for Iran’s armed forces, Gholam-Reggha Merhabi, and stated that over 20 Iranian military commanders have been killed since the operation began. An Israeli military official told Reuters that the Esfahan and Natanz nuclear sites have been significantly damaged.

* Iran's Nuclear Facilities: Joe Inwood, BBC world news correspondent, reports that many of Iran's crucial nuclear facilities are buried deep underground, posing a significant challenge for Israel to destroy them. Israel's most effective weapons, like the ROCKS or Air LORA, would require multiple precise strikes to "burrow down" through layers of reinforced concrete. The US is not currently involved in the strikes, and Israel does not possess the more powerful "bunker buster" bombs (GBU-57/B or MOP) needed for deeper targets. Destroying Iran's nuclear program through military means is considered "not feasible" by analysts, though it can be set back.

* Israeli Defense Minister's Warning: Israel Katz warned that "Tehran will burn" if Iran continues to launch missiles, stating that Iranian citizens, especially those in Tehran, will "pay a heavy price."

International Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts:

* Iran's Warning: Iran has warned the UK, US, and France that it will target their bases and ships in the region if they assist Israel in defending against Iranian strikes.

* UK Position: Downing Street confirmed that Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, agreeing on the need to de-escalate. The UK is ready to work with allies for a diplomatic resolution. As of the report, the UK had not taken part in any military action or efforts to defend Israel, and there had been no request from Israel for such assistance.

* US-Iran Nuclear Talks: Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated that continuing nuclear talks with the US is "unjustifiable" given the current situation and what he called Israel's "savagery." Tehran is undecided about participating in scheduled talks in Oman on Sunday, claiming Israeli strikes were conducted with Washington's approval, rendering negotiations "meaningless." The talks, mediated by Oman, aim to reach a new agreement after the US pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal under Donald Trump. The International Atomic Energy Agency recently declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations.

Situation on the Ground:

* Jerusalem's Old City was quiet and largely deserted, with shops shuttered and access to Al Aqsa mosque temporarily closed for security reasons.

israel was hit, but with military support from world powers, their defensive capabilities ensured that damage was restricted. They know Iran cannot inflict serious damage, that is the whole reason they were able to launch an unprovoked attack on Iran in the first place.

The impression you are left with is that Iran is throwing whatever they can at israel as a response to the evil regime in Tel Aviv, but it seems like a forced response of desperation than one which can have the impact required.

Iran is no doubt out gunned but for me they seem to also incompetent or there is lots of Israeli spies in the Millitary. There is no rational explanation as to how Israel killed their Generals and scientists.

Iranian media: Top adviser to supreme leader dies in hospital following Israeli attack

Ali Shamkhani, Iran’s top adviser to its supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has died in the hospital a day after Israel launched airstrikes across the country, Iranian media reports.

Shamkhani had previously served as Iran’s top national security official for a decade and had represented Iran in the China-facilitated rapprochement talks with Saudi Arabia.

Hindutva Hypocrisy Exposed:

Hwo exactly did Israel "start" this when Iran has been funding Hamas, Hezbollah, Houtis, Syrians all to attack Israel as proxy for decades?

How has israel started this when Iran literally has a countdown clock openly in public for Israel's destruction and its leader always talks about complete destruction of Israel for decades?

Don't make the mistake of thinking entire world is dumb. Even the dumbest person will not think Israel started this.

They might be violating human rights and going over board here, but you have to be a complete liar to claim Israel started this.

Don't use your religion to hide behind lies and hypocrisy.

  1. Clock started with Hamas (1987), Hezbollah (1982), Houtis (1992)
  2. No mention of Israel atrocities and genocide and land grab since 1920s
  3. No mention of ongoing and daily slaughter of Palestinians babies, children, women and civilians in Gaza

The "Low IQ" Hindutva have the nerve to call other hyprocrites!

Iran can be accused of many things but cowardice and unwillingness to sacrifice themselves on the battlefield is not one of them. During the Iran-Iraq war, their forces literally threw themselves in front of Iraqi tanks and artillery in human waves despite being massively outnumbered and overpowered. They faced down Saddam's gas and chemical attacks.

If Iran is the champion of funding proxies then Pakistan takes a close second with all the lunatics we've sponsored - including sectarian thugs like SSP/LEJ who've killed their own citizens for the temerity of being a Shia or a minority with little pushback from the state until recent years in places like Parachinar. If these people took weapons from Iran to defend themselves after their own government abandoned them, I don't blame them for one second, and I'm no Shia.

At least support for Hezbollah served its purpose of driving Israel out of Southern Lebanon while support for Iraqi militias helped defeat ISIS. Houthis delivered a wonderful slap to the face of Saudi Arabia when it bombed Aramco. 10 drones cut 50% of Saudi oil supply causing boy wonder MBS to pee his pants - since then he's been desperate to reconcile with Iran. Killing of civilians obviously I don't condone.

There are two sides to every story. I cannot find any independently sourced evidence that Iran has supported TTP but if Iran's accused of leniency towards BLA, same can be said of Pakistan and Jundallah/Jaish-e-Adl. Besides this is old news as more recently Pakistan and Iran have cooperated to root out Baloch insurgents:

Iran can also point out Pakistan's footdragging for years over building its part of the gas pipeline. Imagine a nation with chronic energy shortages delaying a project that would supply them with cheaper energy than imported oil because its cowering in fear of US secondary sanctions and Saudi Arabia. An independent nation that puts its peoples' interests first would tell both to go jump in the river. Has India stopped importing Russian energy since Ukraine ?

There should be no antagonism between Pakistan and Iran. Iran were the first to recognise Pakistan and the Shah was the first head of state to visit Pakistan. They supplied us in 1971 in our darkest hour. Instead of taking potshots, Pakistanis should back them in their darkest hour against these vile Israelis led by a crooked fascist wannabe who prolongs wars for political survival.

This war should not be Irans alone to fight. I always thought the Iranians were using the Palestinians, who just needed someone to give them some weapons. But Netanyahu is determined to take over the ME and Iran is the last part of the plan. Where is Egypt? A huge army that will fight who? Who are Qatar and Saudi buying the trillion dollars to fight? Why hasnt PK spoken up? Why did PK abstain on the IAE vote and voted the same way as Ind. Where is Turkey? Netanyahu thinks himself as terminator and he wont stop unless these pathetic and cowardly countries actually show a bit of backbone.

Difference is Israel has been targeting Generals, Scientists and getting it right.

Israel has officially requested that the United States join its ongoing operation against Iran, particularly targeting underground nuclear facilities such as the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), which the Israeli Air Force does not have the means to effectively strike without “bunker busters” like the GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator).
