Pakistan under-19 cricket team manager Nadeem Khan on Sunday said the way his side lost to eventual champions India in the World Cup semi-finals, it looked like they were under some spell.

“We were confident that it would be a close match but as the match progressed and our batting went down for 59 it made one wonder if there was a magic spell on the team,” Nadeem said.

“It appeared as if our batsmen had no idea what was happening out on the field or how to tackle the situation and pressure.”

India, after outclassing Pakistan, went on to beat Australia in the final and win the U-19 World Cup for a record fourth time.

Nadeem, who toured India in 1999 with the Pakistan Test squad, appreciated the gesture of the Indian team coach Rahul Dravid to later visit the opposition dressing room and boost the morale of the players.

“It was a very nice gesture only confirming Dravid’s stature in our eyes,” Nadeem said.

The former spinner, who is the elder brother of Moin Khan, admitted that a lot of work needed to be done to improve youth cricket in Pakistan.

“I wouldn’t say our performance was satisfactory even though we managed to make the semifinals. Compared to previous youth teams the current generation of junior players lacked in many areas,” he added.

WoW Dravid visited their dressing room. Reminds me of his same gesture after 2007 defeat to Bangladesh. He is a classy bloke. About Magic? lol is he kidding.

If angels of Allah can make fielders drop catches, then magic spell to get batsmen is fair play I suppose.

Well we can get an overlook of why our players don't show constant improvement, they dismiss allot of their flaws leaving everything to Allah, how is Allah going to help when you aren't doing anything yourself? a very lazy mentality. PS it is not the first time our people have dismissed our losses as "magic" casted by the opponents, seriously how delusional can one get...

Awful how he is putting the players down just so that he can get a pat on the back. Absolute lack of class.

Good gesture by Rahul to visit PAK dressing room; Dravid good ambassador of the game as always :salute

Dravid has always been a class act. And this Nadeem Khan guy needs to see a psychiatrist

Lol magic! Never mind the batsmen aren't good enough, there was a spell on them..:D.

Normal phrase used in Pakistan, no need to make it bigger than it is. But Dravid is class.

Amazing that we finished third in an U-19 World Cup when the manager blames batting collapses to magic and the captain is selected due to his English skills.

Dont know why people are throwing hissy fits around. Its normal to use such words in a conversation especially urdu conversations. He is obviously using it as a metaphor to emphasise on how pathetic the players played in that game. To say he really means it was real magic is wrong.

reminds me of the episode of family guy where god is making the patriots lose

We really need a new U19 manager, perhaps Javed Miandad would be a good option.

What he means by 'magic spell' is the thing that happens to Pakistan when they face India in major tournaments. It has very little to do with player skills and all to do with their heads.

Pakistan seniors have done well in CT to breakout of it after so many years but it remains to be seen if that was a flash in the pan or not. Juniors have traditionally been unaffected but that changed this time. Worrying signs.

Or pak U19 team skills were not up to the standard required to beat Ind U19 team; just accept that and make plans for next U19 WC

I have to agree. These are just kids at the end of the day and U19 matches and tournaments are there for player development and should not be viewed the same way as first class cricket.

1) so he should tell the kids that their skills arent up to the standard?

2) what did Kohli say after losing CT final? He didnt accept they lacked anything. He said they could not have done anything more and all their preparations were perfect. It was just that the opposition played better.

Agreed, something like that he could have said which people can understand and believe . Instead of talking about magic spell

That is what expected from Managers; suppose to be trained in giving politically correct media statements!

Dravid speaking at a presser:

"I didn't go to the dressing room but Pakistan had a very talented left-arm fast-bowler who bowled very well in the tournament, I met him outside the dressing room and congratulated him and said 'well done in the tournament'. It's exciting as a coach to see good talent, we had some great talent and they were also very appreciative of our cricketers. Their coaches mentioned to me many times that the standard of cricket we play was a benchmark. They were effusive in their praise and I also acknowledged that they have some good talent as well."

Do we have anyone in managerial/high position roles that do not spout out lie after lie?

That's what happens when you appointment a useless manager, who is putting the blame on black magic instead of providing us the logical reasons of a loss.

Its a common phrase in Hindi/ urdu conversations. Doesnt mean he meant it literally.

Don't disagree with skills part. But will emphasize the point again: total capitulation was not just about skills. It was about the head as well - which is a pandemic in Pakistan teams vs India.

Good point ... Also Pak U19 team need professional staff to get still better results in next U19 WC.
