The ICC recently reported that Nepal saw the biggest surge in followers on its digital platforms last week—a rise fueled by their near-upset of England in the opening game of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Nepalese side came agonizingly close to pulling off one of the tournament’s greatest shocks, only falling short by a narrow margin.

Rohit Paudel, Nepal’s captain, had declared after the game that the team had not come to the World Cup merely to “participate.” They arrived with the belief that they could compete with, and even defeat, any team on their path. While heartbreak may still be part of Nepal’s remarkable cricketing journey, their best chance of securing a win in this tournament appears to be against Italy—a team that is also making significant strides in global cricket.

Both sides are realistically aware that progressing to the next round is a long shot. However, for either team to keep that slim possibility alive, Thursday’s afternoon encounter in Mumbai is effectively a must-win. A loss would almost certainly end any hope of qualification. Italy’s challenge has been compounded by the injury to skipper Wayne Madsen, whose participation remains uncertain. Yet on a pitch that has drawn scrutiny for its slow nature following the India vs USA match, Italy could still offer stiff resistance. What may appear as a clash of minnows carries plenty at stake in this tournament.

The crowd is fantastic, Asian countries need to support Nepal and help them grow. Schedule matches in Nepal and invite the Nepalese for 5 match T20 series.

Would be shameful from ICC and Asian boards if Nepal doesn’t get any matches against big teams before the next World Cup.

If Asia cup ever happens again Nepal should be given direct entry.

Italy produced a dominant performance with both bat and ball to secure their first-ever T20 World Cup win, thrashing Nepal by 10 wickets. After suffering a heavy 73-run defeat to Scotland in their opening match, Italy bounced back in style at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium with a completely transformed display.

Nepal struggled from the outset and were restricted to 123 all out after a slow and cautious innings. Italy’s leg-spinner Crishan Kalugamage was instrumental with the ball, claiming 3-18, while only three Nepal batters managed to score more than 20.

In reply, brothers Justin Mosca and Anthony Mosca wasted no time asserting control. It was just the second occasion in T20 World Cup history that siblings opened the batting together — having previously done so against Scotland — and they raced to 68 runs inside the powerplay and 97 by the 10-over mark. Nepal’s bowlers had no answers as both Mosca brothers struck unbeaten half-centuries, guiding Italy to their target with 7.2 overs remaining.

The comprehensive victory significantly improves Italy’s net run-rate and moves them above England in Group C. Italy will next face England on Monday, while Nepal look to secure their first points against the West Indies on Sunday.

Italy is my 2nd favorite team in football (Argentina is 1st).

So, it felt natural for me to root for Italy against Nepal today. :dav

Wait is the group we were supposed to be in? Well I am glad we boycotted and didn't have to face Italy.

Italy could've given Bangladesh a good fight.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they give good fights to England and West Indies. Even upsets are not out of the equations.

Feel sad that Italy won.

Nepal are developing home grown players and a good cricket infrastructure. They also have passionate fans of the game.

For the long term health of the game we need them to be engaged in cricket.

It's nice to seen an Italian team but they aren't really a long term prospect in cricket.
