Italy win Euro 2020 after defeating England in a penalty shootout

Italy vs England: who will win the EURO 2020 final?

To be honest I don't think England will ever have a better chance of winning a major tournament. Not only did they have a fairly easy route through after beating Germany, but the two biggest threats to them, Belgium and France got knocked out in the quarters. I don't think they'd have had much chance against them as they had genuine goal scorers in their team whereas Italy and Spain both were light on world class strikers despite being good footballing teams.

I agree. But where was Kane tonite? Completely went AWOL when it mattered

:)))
What a perfect 24 hours of no sleep. Jumped up at 3:30 am in anticipation of Messi winning. And now for England to lose and the sorry faces of their disgraceful fans and their hype.

Why didn't Sterling take a penalty - instead they left it to a young kid who had been on the field only a couple of minutes.

A great opportunity opening missed. I knew as soon as it went to pens, Italy were going to win. With all the attacking talents available, it was a pretty poor performance tonight

It was a mismatch. The score would be 4-1 on another day. England fluked their way to the finals. Forever and always chokers.

You know how. VR may or may not be conclusive but one can easily judge it for themselves after watching the replay (plus he has the track record for being a cheat).

Therefore he deserved to be on the losing side.

Of course everyone wants to blame the 4 black players now

It’s expected to miss 1 or maybe 2 penalties in a shootout. To miss 3 is simply unforgivable.

Sterling and Kane flop in the final.

England threw it away in the second half, it was always going to be difficult in a shootout with Donnaruma.
I thought they could have even taken the game in the second half of ET, but JG stamps on Grealish took the sting out of the game.

Kane actually ran the show in the first 45 mins and was the reason why they scored, a negitive change of tactics in the second half took him out of the game, but he was bullying both Chiellini and Bonunnci in that first half, when the team dropped back, he was alway going to struggle alone upfront with no pace in him.

Hell yes!!! England is probably my most hated country and have the worst fans in the world. So nice to see them choke hahaha

Get ready for racist abuse on social media from those loyal England fans.

Sad but true, it will be inevitable now - the 3 missers plus Sterling for bottling it.

Shameful stuff.

England's bid to end their 55-year wait for a major trophy ended in the familiar agony of defeat in a penalty shootout as Italy claimed the Euro 2020 crown at Wembley.

On a night of anticipation, tension and ultimate heartbreak in a feverish atmosphere, England looked on course for their most joyous day since 30 July 1966 when Luke Shaw gave them the perfect start after two minutes.

Italy, unbeaten in 33 matches before this final, slowly edged their way back into the game and were level in the 67th minute when Leonardo Bonucci pounced after England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford turned Marco Verratti's header on to a post.

And after a tense period of extra time failed to find a winner, it was on to penalties and bitter disappointment for England manager Gareth Southgate and his players, who had gone into this final on a wave of expectation and high emotion.

England missed three of their five penalties, Marcus Rashford hitting a post and Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Jadon Sancho before - so cruelly for such a fine young player - Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka also saw the giant Italy goalkeeper save his spot-kick.

Harry Kane and Harry Maguire were on target for England while Pickford kept hopes alive with saves from Andrea Belotti and Jorginho while Domenico Berardi, Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi scored for Italy.

The tearful 19-year-old Saka, who showed such courage to step forward, was consoled by England team-mates and manager Southgate but there was no real consolation for them or the expectant fans packed into Wembley.

After so much hope, England's long wait goes on.

England won't have a better chance. Window still open given the squad is strong but Southgate really messed up with delaying those subs. Should have started Grealish.

Grealish is.***** and another hyped up englishmen

If.you want quality look at Chiesa and that verratti fella

He's always keen to take a penalty for Man City why not today.

I was suprised that maguire and saka stepped up before him and grealish, maguire was a big surprise, but doesnt matter, sterling stuggles with one on one in open play, not sure what pens he took for city.

Sterling will be remembered as bottler and a coward after tonight. He should have taken a penalty.

Chiesa wasnt a starter for italy at this tournment and had to work himself into, he was even about to be taken off in the semis till he scored.

However your wrong about grelish, he was Englands best player in this tournment, when ever he comes on is when they start ticking in attack, his stats for the little time he got is senational, its quite bizarre how he doesn't start.

Sterling just wasn't confident and I don't blame him. I remember him ballooning a penalty for City earlier in the season.

And Rashford miss was another level, he changed his run up 3 times before taking the penalty! Total lack of confidence and the pressure got to him.

Gutted. England were so close. Started off well in the first 20 mins and Italy bossed the game with possession.

It was a tense with a few England chances in the second extra time.

Its tough for the players to step up under extreme pressure.

I felt rashford should've taken a normal penalty and none went through the middle.

They were so close.

They have depth and who knows the world cup is next year. They have experience in very nervy tense games.

Rashford is usually a good penalty taker. Led United home quite a few times. I think the pressure of international tournaments is different.

What depth? How many of them are world class players that are playing in top european teams?

In reality these are just bunch of hyped up average English players. Nobody in europe will pay top dollar for them.

Pickford was immense tonight. Terrific keeping and was terribly unlucky with Italy’s equalizer. The penalty save of Jorginho was fantastic as well under extreme pressure.

England paid the price for not going for the second goal. In some way, scoring such an early goal backfired for them because they became overly cautious and it helped Italy who played with a lot of aggression and at a high tempo which ultimately knackered England.

The real star of the match was Chiesa. What a player. England simply couldn’t cope with him.

A very heartbreaking moment indeed. It was the perfect occasion for England to finally win again. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Rashford was the real villain of the shootout. Absolutely bottled it from the beginning when he was standing at a 90 degree angle to the goal like an idiot.

He was soiling his pants and was overcompensating by trying to be extra clever and got owned.

He is an excellent penalty taker when he keeps it simple.

His missing had a ripple effect on Sancho and Saka as well.

England basically lost the shootout the moment he stepped up.

Sterling should have taken it too along with Shaw and Henderson. For me they are the real villains, Rashford was a weird sub, there was no point of him bringing him so late.

England is a much better side than Italy, only Chieasa was threatning. But England should have killed the game after the early goal. I know Southgate prefers stafety and that has taken his side to final, but you could clearly see Italy wasn’t in the game the first 15-20 minutes. England have so many attacking players that they could have easily scored 2-3 goals in first half and finish this off.

And in the second half Poms got more defensive and Italy started creating chances and in fact could have won even before the penalties.

I have praised Southgate but today he wasn’t good enough. Sterling was completely off, Mount was extremely poor so why not send in Grealish and Foden early in the the second half? Even Rashford wound have been better option than Saka.

And not a wise decision to sub the subbed Henderson. As a senior player he should have stayed and taken the penalty instead of a 19 years old Saka playing few matches before this. England lost the game on their own in real match time. Not getting out the full potential. Would have loved Bielsa to coach this team.

Cant blame Rashford, that one is on the coach. He brought Rashford on practically the last minute, so probably even wasnt warmed up or mentally there yet.

its a young team, will only get better over the next few years, a wc semi and euro final is a decent achievement.

italy changed up really well after half time, chiesa was easily the best outfielder on the pitch. great performance from pickford.

shame abt the pens, but on balance the better team on the night won in the end.

Kane, Henderson, pickford, rashford, sterling, mcguire, trippier, the young lads, trent Alexander, the England goalscorer tonight.

They have got age on their side.

We've heard this all before.

England will never get a better chance to win the Euros. It was even raining for them, not too hot today but still played as if they were scared but this is the fault of Southgate. At home, Wembley you take the game to the opposition not go all out defence. The pressing stopped right away, Kane was in his own half when he should have been pushing up more. A manager who was a defender, has a defensive mindset will always allow the opposition to stay in the game.

He then made an idiotic decision to give Rashford a penalty, he's hardly kicked a ball in the match. He has bottled it in many big matches, one of the most over rated players in the world today.

There is nothing herioc about coming 2nd, the boys done well ..:inzi..and the rest of it. This is an extention of the arrogance the media was showing, calling for knighthoods, planning bank holiday day off on Monday etc.

England need to change their mindset and learn to stop bottling it when it really matters. I dont see England having any chance in the world cup.

Said so before the tournament began that Italy would win it like they have done. Never right off the Italians or put them in the "other" category particularly with their water tight defence they have always been so difficult to score against. In this tournament they played much more attacking Football which is against their tradition. Even when England scored so early I knew the Azzurri would come back in to the match, only way England could win was to score a few in the first 30 mins when they were the dominant side. After the break the Italians were all over them like a rash, was a matter of time before they rightfully equalized. England just don't win crucial penalties no matter how much they practice in training sessions the real thing with so much pressure on is a totally difference experience. Southgate made a mistake in not getting Sterling to take one.

I blame Southgate for ignoring certain players who would have had a better chance at scoring pens then the likes of Saka.

Qatar world cup will suit the team who are good at keeping the ball, with the tempretures humid for me teams like Italy Spain will come to the fore again.

Sterling is the key for England, if he performs England win or play well, grealish is so overrated it beggars belief

i didnt think they'd make it to the final when the tournament started, hence why i thought it was a decent achievement.

england lacks an attacking midfielder who can control the centre of the pitch, the central mid fielders dont have any significant attacking output. until that is sorted i dont think eng will consistently challenge the best teams (as was the case here)

Southgate brought in Sancho and Rashford specifically for the penalty shootout. And they both missed. That does not look good on his part. He made 19 year old Saka shoot last. Why not make Sterling shoot last? I feel this is on Southgate.

Grealish should’ve been in starting line-up, or at least beginning of second half. Southgate naused up. Absolute zero point on bringing him on during extra time. England were just not attacking at full throttle. Defensive tactics.

Missed the best chance to win it. I just don’t see England in another final again.

You cannot create the tension and pressure in a knock out game, let alone the final. There is no such thing as a penalty specialist. A penalty shoot-out in the final is all about nerves of steel.

He made Saka go last because Sterling bricked it.

This is on Rashford too. This is was not an episode of Strictly come dancing.

Penalties is most defiantly a mental game rather than a tactical one, especially in the biggest match for your country. When the game begins you can see how nervous the players are but then they ground themselves into it, by subing your penalty takers on the last minute of the match while they have been sitting on the sidelines biting there nails is idiotic, Rashford by far is MU best penalty taker but wasnt given the time to get rid of his nerves.

The loss is on southgate, england only got Germany and Italy to test themselves while average players like sterling and saka got the recognition against weak teams, and better players like Sancho, Rashford, Grealish, Foden got left out.

It was obvious as soon as grelish came on england staring attacking again after spending more then half the match defending, rashfore should have come on with atleast 15 mins to go.

Bottlers will bottle, written in stone.

England with their overrated stars brought back to Earth.

They can go back to blaming their black players.

Depends which Italy turns up.

Stupendously awesome Italy (vs Belgium, vs Wales): Italy win.

Quite good but also slightly lucky Italy (vs Spain): game is 50-50.

Scrappy, dodgy and ordinary Italy (vs Austria): England win.

So I have no idea really. Lol

Excited though! :)

So the latter two were on display and England should've gone for the jugular like Denmark tried to but didn't. Southgate parked the London bus

Seems like Sancho and Rashford were brought for penalties.

Southgate has a thing for penalty shootouts. In the 1996 Euro semifinals, England and Germany were level 5-5 after 5 penalties. Then Germany scores to make it 6 in a row.

Southgate steps up to take England’s 6th penalty…

At least his team beat Germany this time, a small measure of redemption.

Yes where was Sterling? And why didn’t Grealish take the last penalty? Saka was knackered.

Countries like Italy and Spain play the smartest and most tactical football. Northern European countries like Germany, Netherlands, and England play the most physical and hard running football.

I was curious about how the Italian defense would handle Kane and Sterling after they ran rampant against Germany, Ukraine and Denmark?

I have to say I was extremely impressed. The way they shut down Kane and Sterling was spectacular. Cut off the passes to them and maintain positions so that they can be challenged quickly, often by multiple players, if they do get the ball. Extremely high football IQ.

just like pakistan, raw talent is in abundance in England. They will come out strong on future just like pakistan will do in case of cricket in coming years.

England's Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy was "incredibly painful" but the players gave "everything they possibly could", said manager Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions, appearing in their first major men's final for 55 years, were agonisingly beaten on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

"We are all together. They have given the country some unbelievable memories," Southgate said on BBC One.

Captain Harry Kane said defeat would "hurt for the rest of our careers".

"We should be extremely proud as a group of what we have achieved," the Tottenham striker added.

"I couldn't have given more, the boys couldn't have given more.

"Penalties is the worst feeling in the world when you lose. It wasn't our night but it's been a fantastic tournament and we should hold our heads high.

"It's going to hurt for a while, but we're on the right track and we're building and hopefully we can progress from this next year."

'The players should be incredibly proud'
England reached their first men's European Championship final by topping their group, then defeating Germany, Ukraine and Denmark in the knockout stage.

Luke Shaw gave them a stunning start to the Wembley showpiece by scoring in the second minute, but Leonardo Bonucci levelled in the second half.

They were the only two goals of the game, and Italy edged home 3-2 on penalties as Marcus Rashford hit the post, and Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka had efforts saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Southgate said: "Tonight is going to be extremely difficult for all of us, of course. You have to feel that disappointment because the opportunities to win trophies like this are so rare in your life.

"But when they reflect on what they have done, they should be incredibly proud of themselves.

"The players have been an absolute credit. They have given everything they possibly could.

"They have been an absolute joy to work with and they have gone further than we've gone for so long. But it is incredibly painful in that dressing room."

Southgate said the Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the Football Association, had been to see the England players after the game.

"I just said we could have no recriminations. The calls for the penalties were mine," he added.

"They have done more than more than any other England team in over 50 years."

'Games are decided on fine margins'

Defender Harry Maguire missed the first two games because of an ankle injury but was a mainstay thereafter, being part of a backline that conceded just two goals in the tournament and none from open play.

The Manchester United captain told BBC Sport: "It is hard to take any positives at the moment. We are heartbroken. We are all devastated. The lads gave absolutely everything and emptied our tanks on the pitch.

"It was a ding-dong battle - we had the first half, they had the second, and extra time could have gone either way. It wasn't our night on penalties. The fine margins went for them, the bounce of the ball. We are disappointed.

"We conceded a wonder strike from a free-kick [against Denmark] and a set-play in which it has ricocheted three or four times and it fell to them.

"Games are decided on fine margins and it was with them tonight, not us.

Why can't England win anything in football? Isn't it like their main sport?

Roy Keane has lambasted the senior England players who allowed Bukayo Saka to take the decisive penalty in England's shootout defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

Saka's penalty was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma as England suffered heartbreak at Wembley.

The 19-year-old has never taken a penalty for his club side, Arsenal, but was given the responsibility of taking the all-important fifth kick in the shootout.

"If you're (Raheem) Sterling or (Jack) Grealish, you cannot sit there and have a young kid [Saka] go up for a penalty ahead of you, you can't," Keane told ITV. "You cannot let a shy 19-year-old go up in front of you. They have a lot more experience, Sterling has won trophies, they had to get in front of the young kid and stand up."

England's other penalty misses were by 21-year-old Jadon Sancho and 23-year-old Marcus Rashford, both of whom had performed peripheral roles in the tournament and were brought on in the final minute of extra-time.

England's only successful penalty takers were Harry Maguire and Harry Kane.

"I chose the penalty takers based on what we've done in training and nobody is on their own. We've won together as a team and it's absolutely on all of us in terms of not being able to win the game tonight," said England boss Gareth Southgate.

"But in terms of the penalties, that's my call and totally rests with me."

Italy manager Roberto Mancini said "I was due this" after his side beat England on penalties to win Euro 2020.

Mancini failed to win a major trophy as a player with the Azzurri, finishing third at Italia 90 and runner-up at the Under-21 European Championship in 1986.

"I was very fortunate to play in a great side in 1990 and a terrific under-21 team in 1988," he said.

"Despite the fact we were the best team, we didn't win it and lost both times on penalties."

After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Italy have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under Mancini, and are unbeaten in 34 games.

The former Manchester City boss said his tears after the game were for the whole of Italy.

"It was the emotion which happens after achieving something incredible. It was the emotion of seeing the guys celebrate and the fans in the stands," he said.

"Seeing everything we have managed to create, all of the hard work we have put in over the last three years, but specifically the last 50 days which have been very hard.

"It's the fact we have been able to forge this team spirit over the last 50 days, they have really created something which can never be separated going forward. They will always be synonymous with this triumph."

After giving the country a first European Championship since 1968, Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini said he felt "there was something magical in the air" since the tournament kicked off in Rome a month ago.

"A few tears fell. We all deserved it, at this age we realise even more what it means to win such a trophy," said the 36-year-old.

"We have been saying that something magical is in the air since the end of May, day after day."

Enjoyed watching the English side lose at home.

LOL!

Not a fan of bringing players on for a minute or 2 just to take a penalty.

Also where were Sterling, Grealish and Shaw hiding when it came to the penalty shoot-out.

I don't actually think black players should take penalties for England, especially those who are still quite young. There must be an added pressure knowing you are going to get abused and sent monkey memes on social media if you miss.

On what basis.. Italy had to do it the hard way in the competition. England had the easier draw, played almost all matches at home and yet needed a dubious penalty to pass through to the final. Italy were clearly the best team in the tournament.

No sense in bringing on two subs just before the penalty shootout. Should have brought them on earlier and allowed them to warm up.
I just felt they were overwhelmed.

Apart from that, Southgate did well.

Not every one looks at the situation in a colour of skin perspective. Plus if Sterling had score and England had won, then the 'black' players you refer to would've become sporting imortals. No risk no reward.

Bottom line, Sterling bottled it, Rashford was overwhelmed with the pressure. Saka poor guy, never had taken a penalty in an international games.

All this bravado talk about practising penalties is meaningless - the tension/pressure of a shootout cannot be created in the training ground.

It makes it worse, when you consider the final was at Wembley!!!!!!!

This is loss on Southgate.

I know not everyone looks at the situation from a colour perspective. But clearly some do, and that is why it was mentioned even in this thread well before the social media abuse started. No point in burying your head in the sand and pretending it's not there.

But I agree that Southgate is to blame, he should have taken into account the added pressure and tried to ensure that more experienced heads who might cope better take the kicks.

Gareth Southgate says he wants to lead England to 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Gareth Southgate confirms he wants to lead England into 2022 World Cup; FA CEO Mark Bullingham intends to offer an extension until 2024 Euros; Southgate: "I don't want to commit to something longer than I should and I never want to outstay my welcome"

Southgate and his players suffered heartbreak at Wembley on Sunday night as England were beaten 3-2 on penalties by Italy after a 1-1 draw after extra-time.
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said during Euro 2020 he wants to hand Southgate, who also took England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, a new deal.

When asked about the possibility of a new contract, Southgate replied: "I don't think now is an appropriate time to be thinking about it. We have to qualify for Qatar. I need time to go away and reflect on Euro 2020. I need a rest.

"It is an amazing experience but to lead your country in these tournaments takes its toll.
"I said at the time it is great to have that internal support, you greatly value that as a manager.

"I want to take the team to Qatar, I feel we have made progress over the four years, we have had a fourth, a third and a second-placed finish and that is as good as anyone.

Gary Neville says he is saddened but not surprised by the online abuse aimed at Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, after they failed to score penalties in England's Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy
Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were subjected to racist abuse on social media after failing to score in the penalty shootout.

Southgate described the abuse directed at the players as "unforgivable", saying: "It's just not what we stand for.

"We have been a beacon of light in bringing people together in people being able to relate to the national team, and the national team stands for everybody and so that togetherness has to continue.

"We have shown the power our country has when it does come together and has that energy and positivity together.

"It's my decision who takes the penalties, it's not a case of players not volunteering or more experienced players backing out."

Southgate added: "We heal together as a team now, and we are there for them, and I know that 99 per cent of the public will be as well.

"Bukayo in particular has been an absolute star in this tournament, incredible maturity and the way he has played has brought a smile to so many people's faces. He's become such a popular member of the group and I know he has got everybody's support."

Southgate added it was too early to be able to reflect on the positives of the journey to the final.

"I know in time we will have an appreciation of that and I know the messages we are getting underline that," he said.

"But when you are in sport and you get to a final you know those opportunities are rare and to be so close and to know what that has taken and know you have to pick up and go again, that is very hard the day after.

"We will go again of course."

England players react during a penalty shootout at the end of the Euro 2020 soccer championship final match between England and Italy at Wembley stadium in London, Sunday, July 11, 2021. Italy defeated England 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Southgate says his group now knows what it takes to do well in tournaments and is excited for the future.

"Russia was the beginning, we had seven in the starting team from Russia and that experience has been critical through the big matches in this tournament," he said.

"So to add the young players in at the time we did, there is another group with more learning and understanding.

"Because of what they have been through in these two tournaments they will have a belief that they can get close. The cycle and the expectation of the group will know what's needed to get to the level to get to win and that should be a process that stands us in good stead."

Styris, Neesham comment on England's Euro 2020 final loss, take dig at ICC's boundary count rule

Euro 2020: England lost to Italy 2-3 on penalties in the final at Wembley Stadium in London.

England's hopes of lifting their first-ever European championship trophy were dashed on Sunday at the Wembley Stadium in London. After a gruelling contest that went to the penalty shootouts, England lost the match 2-3 on penalties with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Buyako Saka missing their strikes. Former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris, and Kiwi allrounder Jimmy Neesham commented on England's Euros defeat while also recalling England's win at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The final between England and New Zealand at the ICC 2019 ODI World Cup saw a myriad of controversies, the biggest one being regarding how the contest was decided. The match ended in a tie, and the following Super-Over also ended in a draw.

England were declared the champions as, at the time, the ICC rule stated that if the Super Over ended in a tie, the team with more boundaries will be declared win the match. While the boundary count rule has been changed now, and a Super Over is followed by a 2nd Super Over if the first one ends in a tie - clearly, Styris and Neesham are still not over the 2019 World Cup defeat.

Neesham :

Styris :

Meanwhile, this was the first major international trophy that Italy have won since their 2006 FIFA World Cup win. The Azzurri had last won the continental title back in 1968. Italy had reached the final in Euro 2000 and Euro 2012, as well, but had lost to France, and Spain, respectively.

On what basis.. Italy had to do it the hard way in the competition. England had the easier draw, played almost all matches at home and yet needed a dubious penalty to pass through to the final. Italy were clearly the best team in the tournament.

Firstly England should have started with Grealish and Foden/Rashford or at least have made the subs early in second half.

And if these two teams play a series of 5 mathes England would win 4-1 because they have better players, quicker players and if you understand football properly there is no doubt there whatsoever which players are better.

Italy have been terrific, no doubt about that, and I personally have been an Italian fan since 1990 WC. But this version of Italy is not a better side than this very England side.

I believe Southgate messed it up with changing to 5 defenders and got too defensive and even when they had the opportunity to kill the game they didn't, esepcially in second half they started to believe 1-0 was enough, and that is never a safe lead in football.

For me this Italy side was Denmark of 1992 and Greece of 2004.

Italy won it, alright, good for them. But I still believe this England side is better. And if they can get a Biesla type of manager they will be a force even in the next WC. The fans of PL clubs have so much hate for eachother that it sorts of hamper the national team, where the patriotic desire is absent.

Your clearly are missinformed regarding the Italian side, they were missing 5 Top players from their squad, with chiesa injured last night and Spinazzola arguably the player of the tournament got injured against Belgium.

The 5 players who will make Italy even stronger:

Zaniolo
Spinazzola
Chiesa
Pellegrini
Sensi

Chiesa and Spinazzola were never expected to deliver, Chiesa wasnt part of Italys starting 11 till he got a goal and immobile and insigne failed.

The rest of the players would not have been selected ahead of JG or Verrati, so they would make them weaker not stronger

Italy was not the strongest of teams in this tournament, they had great unity and good form coming in the tournment with no pressure, they almost got brutally exposed by a very poor spain side.

At the end of day, manchini won, southgate lost, you could change the managers teams around and manchini would still win.

Italy have gone something like 35 games unbeaten for a reason. While Italy might not have players of the individual price tickets of their England counterparts, the football they produced as a team throughout the tournament was far superior, although that dropped off with the loss of the highly influential Spinazzola. Even yesterday their passing interplay was on a different levels to England.

I think those people who are looking at England as having the better players maybe don't understand that the game is about team dynamic and not price labels. Premier league players often look a lot better in their club sides because they are surrounded by the best players from all over the world. When you take them out, a lot of the flair goes with it, and you are left with a workmanlike England.

Southgate is the international version of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. Both are negative and defensive managers, who play boring football with two DMs every match. In big matches, both play 5 at the back, because they aren't good enough coaches to coach their team to be better defensively, so they have to stick an extra man in defence. Southgate made the same mistakes that Ole made in the Europa League final. But both of these managers get no criticism because they got mates in the media.

England scored an early goal and just sat back for the rest of the match. Italy didn't offer much in the first half, but after the second half, they were all over England and it was only a matter of time, before they scored and they did. Southgate didn't change anything to prevent that from happening, when even a blind man could see that Italy could score any second. He should have brought on both Saka and Grealish at the 60th minute, before Italy scored. But he brings on Saka after Italy scored and Grealish doesn't come on until the first half of extra time.

Then comes extra time, when Southgate is playing for penalties. He brings on Trashford and Sancho for penalties. Both Rashford and Sancho should have been on at the start of the extra time to run at the Italian defence. Bonucci and Chiellini are fantastic defenders, but they are 34 & 36 respectively and they were playing their second consecutive extra time. Rashford and Sancho fresh of the bench could have really troubled the Italian defence, but negative Southgate doesn't have the tactical nous to think like that.

Then we go to penalties. You make Rashford and Sancho take penalties, when they just came on and had no time to settle into the game. And you give the last penalty to 19 year old kid Saka. You put the hopes of the whole nation on Saka's shoulders. Saka is a very talented young player, but having him take the last penalty was criminal. It should have been Sterling, Grealish, Shaw or Stones or anyone with a bit of experience. Not a 19 year old kid, who has hardly played for England. What an absolute disgraceful decision.

Italy were the deserved winners. As an England fan, I am really annoyed. But I am a football fan first, and as a football fan, I am glad that Italy won. They were by far the best team in the whole tournament. They may not have the star quality of England, but as a team, they were so much better. And they play good football, which is the most important thing. Mancici (A top manager) changed their fortunes and their whole footballing culture. This isn't a typical defensive Italian side. This team plays good football, and I am glad that good football won over negative football.

And now hopefully, the arrogant English fans can shut up about the whole "it's coming home" nonsense for the time being.

The best metric for judging which side is dominant on the field is to look at time of possession percentage. Italy was ahead by something like 64% to 36% which showed utter dominance. Yes, England was ahead by a goal but no good team sits on a one goal lead.

And if these two teams play a series of 5 mathes England would win 4-1 because they have better players, quicker players and if you understand football properly there is no doubt there whatsoever which players are better.

No. Football is a team game. It is not about which of players are better, it is about which team is better.

The best English players Kane and Sterling were shut down by the Italian defensive unit to the point that people are asking where were they? I think the two had a total of zero shots at the Italian goal :))

Italy would win 5-0.

Italy vs England UEFA EURO 2020 final

Italy won the war of attrition, it´s as simple as that. In my preview of the Final, I said two things,....

.... The key for Italy would've to be to try to starve England of ball possession and to slowly down their spirit which they'll be full of in the initial half an hour or so, seeing their supporters etc. Italy will have to play the game of patience.

I just get this strong feeling that if England score first, it'll happen a bit early in the match. However, if Italy score first, then it'll be past the 50th minute of it.

... and I was spot on with both! The longer the game got, the longer England´s lead stayed only at 1-0, and then when it stood at 1-1, the more nervous the home team and its supporters got. Italy won the game of nerves, and it´s one thing which they know full well how to pull off. There came a point in the match where the Italian players literally played on the minds of the opposition with all their usual fouling and other such tactics that they´re most known for, and it was this which fully hinted that Italy had by this point fully warmed up to the task. England were passive past the 30 minute or so, and Italy, on the other hand, kept picking on their game, kept gaining confidence, and then the equaliser too came, and the match entered the Italian territory. Chellini´s foul on Saka, I think, was pure comedy but yet trademark Italian playing style. "Where are you going, son?" is how I would interpret that scene. England relied too heavily on their 1-0 lead, and once they lost that, they looked lost for ideas as well, it seemed. Bonucci´s goal was that split second of madness which could´ve gone either way because England had almost, almost, luckily got away with it with the ball hitting here and there except going inside, until Bonucci finished the deal.

A question, was England´s goal the fastest in an international tournament final?

Anyway, there was a lot discussion on Pickford, given how unsafe he seemed in whatever action that we saw him in the matches leading into the Final, and he did almost do a massive goof up yesterday too, but his mistake luckily didn´t end up costing them anything, however, he was impressive in the penalty shoot-out. He did his bit alright, it´s just that his fellows kept putting the team behind. All in all, congratulations to England fans on their team´s unexpectedly good performance, commiserations to the team for having such awful and disgraceful fans. Now they can stand in Wembley and boo in the empty stands!

Actor of the Tournament: Raheem Sterling, a winner all the way!

Anyway, we were obviously supporting Italy, as were most neutrals. I felt fully soaked up after the match. It was an amazing ride of thrills and emotions. The roof literally came off the moment England missed the last penalty as my siblings and nieces celebrated madly. I, though, was in a state of disbelief even quite a few minutes thereafter. Myself and my brother watched the penalty shoot-out with our arms on each others´ shoulders, like the players do it. It was immense fun! :)):)))

It takes quite an effort to come back in a match after conceding a goal in the very second minute, that too being surrounded by such a hostile English crowd. England were unlucky, unlucky in the sense that, in the entire world, the only 20 to 25 men capable of beating England at their home, bearing in mind the circumstances and the crowd factor, ended up reaching the Final to stop them. Congratulations to Italy on a well deserved victory! They´re indeed a hugely talented bunch, full of spirit, determination, and motivation!

I was hugely impressed with Italy yesterday. Thoroughly professional and flawless. Didn´t let Turkey even smell the ball, mind you :afridi. If their yesterday´s showing is anything to go by, then I´ll call them a horse for the long race in the ongoing tournament. Watch out for them, I would say! ....

I said it here, fellows, right after the first match of the tournament. :msd
