James Anderson's dream XI of players he has played with or against in international cricket

Alastair Cook
Virender Sehwag
Virat Kohli
Joe Root
Sachin Tendulkar
Andrew Flintoff
Rishabh Pant
Shane Warne
Stuart Broad
Glenn McGrath
Dale Steyn

----------------------------------------

His comments on each pick,

Cook -
“I got go Cook just on volume of runs and he’s one of my best mates. We played together he was captain for a bit we just became really close and yeah amazing player,”

Sehwag - “I’m gonna go Sehwag. I just feel like Sehwag’s got that ability to take a game away from you he can win a game in a session. He wanted to hit every ball for six, he was really exciting to watch but obviously difficult to bowl,”

Kohli - “Kohli for me. I think Kohli’s just phenomenal like match winner he’s got everything,”

Root - “Joe root every day of the week. I think just he’s someone that… he I think Harry Brook could potentially become England’s greatest ever batter but I think Joe Root England’s greatest ever batter,”

Sachin - “I just think Sachin, he like the one people sort of put up there as the greatest ever, amazing. I think 200 test matches however many ODIs playing with the amount of pressure he he’s seen as a as a God in India so to have that amount of pressure of a billion people watching every time you go out there and play I think he dealt with that amazing.”

Flintoff - “I’d probably go for Fred just because he’s got that something special about him, he change games um with bat ball and in the field similar to Ben Stokes. He can just pull something out of the bag when a team needs it. I just think for match winning sort of influence that got Fred,”

Pant - “Pant I think, he’s almost there like one of the best keeper batters in the world. He’s inventive with his shot making he can you know he’s just got a really strong game for most situations I don’t know enough about the keeping to know whether who’s the best keeper out of the two but I’d go Pant.”

Warne - “Shane Warne, without a doubt one of the greatest characters to ever play the game like you we just mentioned about Fred and what he brings to a team he brings to the game of cricket and Sachin as well in that mold of people looking up to someone He had that in bucket loads he had that Charisma you know someone you wanted to go and watch you pay you know pay your money to go and watch someone like that,”

Broad - “I’m going to go Stuart, just because I think he did it sort of consistently over a long period of time. I think just for pure consistency I go broad.”

McGrath - “I just think McGrath, having grown up watching him and then playing against him I just feel like he there’s no one better who’s sort of metronomic and his accuracy and relentless could move the ball well in every all condition,”

Steyn - “I’m picking Dale Steyn. I didn’t play a lot against Bret Lee played a bit. I mean yeah amazing bowler frighteningly quick could swing it as well. but I just think Steyn was, I think Steyn was the best bowler of this generation like he had everything speed could swing it accurate like he was just a nightmare to play against and he wanted to he had that sort of uh anger in his eyes where he felt like he wanted to kill you when you were batting against him,”

--------------------------------------

A decent XI. I personally will prefer to have some other players who played at the same time, but Anderson is entitled to have his opinion.

Pant was the first one started playing reverse slap against Anderson.
I can understand picking Pant due to how he felt playing against Gilly and Pant, but I did not get ommision of Steven Smith. Broad and Flintoff is due to him playing along with them a lot even though better substitutes are available.

Anyway, it's intersting list and his opinion.

I’m surprised he didn’t pick Rizwan

@gazza619 @Kianig89 @Ahmed216 @Local.Dada @Caved12 @Major

What! Where is the 'greatest' batsman from Asia of the last 30 years, Younis Khan?

Think he was trying to win Indian fans for next season IPL. No way he will pick Sehwag and miss out Steve Smith.

Beyond any doubt. Why else would he not have the 'great' Younis Khan in his team? It's irrelevant what his experiences were bowling to him.

Surprised to see Sehwag on the list. Can't remember too much notable against England but I'm thinking mainly tests in England. Maybe he did more in India.

Also surprised to see no Smith. I wonder if he deliberately excluded current Aussie player.

Rates Flintoff higher than Stokes..

Hmmm
I think he isn't too happy being told to retire by Stokes and Baz. Comes across as quite annoyed when he talks about it.

But of course one of the greatest moments in English cricket was the Flintoff inspired Ashes.

Flintoff wa something else that series. Not sure about the stats but from memory it was one of the best displays of fast bowling.

Am surprised to see no hayden, gilly,ab, smith.included broad when there are better options such as bond, bumrah, Johnson, Cummins, rabada, Harris etc are there.guy seems be highly insecured not to include obvious great aussie players.

It’s available in the YouTube. This is an episode between Steve Harmisson and James Anderson. Anderson gets to chose one between two names for a particular spot so this is how the playing XI would be made. Choice went by,

Cook vs Warner - he chose Cook
Sehwag vs Rohit - he chose Sehwag
Kohli vs Williamson - Kohli
Root vs Smith - Root
KP vs Sachin - Sachin
Flintoff vs Kallis - Flintoff
Gilly vs Pant - Pant
Warne vs Ashwin - Warne
Broad vs Johnson - Broad
Steyn vs Lee - Steyn
McGrath vs Bumrah - McGrath

That’s how the final XI is formed. Because Smith was compared with Root, so Anderson will obviously pick Root. Hence, Smith misses out. Between Flintoff and Kallis, he chose Flintoff. Between KP and Sachin though, he had the guts to ignore the Englishmen.

I don't think Sehwag did much against Eng. But not having Smith caught my attention most in his list.

Thanks. It make more sense now. He was picking between two choices. I see now why Smith is missing here. If he can pick Flinotff over Kallis then Root over Smith goes too.

Tough 4th innings Chase in Chennai 2 weeks after 26/11 and absolutely murdered the English bowling which had Anderson, Flintoff, Swann and Harmison ( IIRC )

I am aware of that but Shewag did not do much outside of one-two innings when Anderson was playing.

When Anderosn played in matches with Sehwag, Sehwag's scores were..

0,0,0,0,0,6,8,9,9,17,23,25,30,33,49,83,117

He selected the 11 when he was trying to get IPL contract, not to be . Pant over Sangakara and Gilli, Kohli over Pontin, Lara, Devillier and Kallis is ridiculous

He selected the 11 when he was trying to get IPL contract,

Is he playing in any IPL team? I don't follow IPL.

It looks like this is simply him picking out of two choices for each position.

he picked Sehwag which is highly questionable, Pant over Gilchrist is insult to the legend , may be Anderson had ulterior motives

He was picking from binary choices,

Cook/Warner, Sehwag/Sharma, Kohil/Williamson, Root/Smith, Pieterson/Sachin, Flintoff/Kallis, Gilchrist/Pant, Warne/Ashwin, Broad/Johnson, McGrath/Bumrah, Steyn/Lee

That explains some of his picks. Pant over Gilly seems questionable and other questionable picks were due to English bias and understanble.

No one will pick Root over Smith or Flintoff over Kallis...

I will also pick Sehwag over Sharma. It's a no brainer.

Anderson is deluded or this is not his team. No way he selected Sehwag, pant above players like Younis, Sngakara, Kallis, Gilcrist...

My post was in response to your take quoted in red above. And the most likely reason is that its extremely difficult for any batsman to survive the quality of bowling attack that England had in that match on a D4 pitch. (I watchhed that match and it was exhilarating!)

but you are right ... this was binary choices and perhaps a PR exercise

Anderson is deluded or this is not his team. No way he selected Sehwag, pant above players like Younis, Sngakara, Kallis, Gilcrist...

Was this recorded pre IPL Auction, or after?

If it was pre IPL Auction then you can understand, otherwise if not he is deluded
