With Rohit Sharma’s retirement on the horizon, could Jasprit Bumrah be India’s next Test and ODI captain? His performance and decision-making on Day 1 of the 1st Test against Australia certainly suggest he’s ready for the challenge. Leading from the front, Bumrah’s incredible 4/17 turned the game on its head after India was bowled out for just 150.

He’s only the second fast bowler to lead India in Tests after Kapil Dev, breaking barriers and proving that bowlers can make exceptional captains too. Bumrah’s approach to captaincy is refreshing—he trusts his instincts, emphasizes adaptability, and isn’t afraid to take calculated risks.

Having learned from some of the best in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Bumrah looks prepared to bring his own style to the role. Could he be the leader India needs for the future?

What are your thoughts on Bumrah as the long-term captain for India?

I am genuinely excited about the prospect of Jasprit Bumrah taking up the captaincy mantle for India!

His performance against Australia was phenomenal, and it really showcased his potential as a leader.

Maybe the pitch also helped him and the other bowlers but I like how thing started for him.

Sunil Gavaskar loses it on air during Day 1 of the 1st Test against Australia as Jasprit Bumrah snubs R Ashwin:

"Really surprised with Ashwin and Jadeja not playing, they have got 900 wickets between them in Test matches. They are not bowlers who can just play in Indian or sub-continent conditions. They are very clever bowlers, they are very experienced bowlers. Even if they might not get you wickets, they will be able to slow the scoring down because of the cleverness of how they bowl."

"I would have thought that on these Australian wickets, there are big boundaries, so I thought you would have gone with both of them. But this is a new management, new thinking. They have gone with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is a promising cricketer, make no mistake about that. But is he ready for Test cricket?"

That’s what true ATG bowlers do. They win games out of nowhere, just phenomenal spell from him.

His impact away from home especially in Australia, South Africa and England is right up there with the greatest in the history of the game.

He's an amazing captain based of what I've seen so far but he can't be an all format captain. But maybe he's the right man to take india's test team forward

He won't play half of the games so not sure him being the captain.

Bumrah is the captain but most of field placements yesterday done by Virat Kohli.

Virat is better test captain than Rohit Sharma.
Kohli loves a fight/fight back and sets the attacking field.at first sight of attcak rohit will revert to defend. Primary sample is no slips for kuldeep in wc finals

During a show on a sports media outlet, Dinesh Karthik said:

“Bumrah did a fabulous job, but Rohit is the designated captain, and he is back, and he should lead this Test team. Simple as that."

Cheteshwar Pujara, while speaking on a sports media outlet, said:

"The way he [Jasprit Bumrah] has showed that in difficult circumstances when we had a tough series at home and when you are playing a first Test match in Australia and to put up a show like that."

"I think he has the capability of leading the team and he's a team's man. You look at him he never only talks about himself, he talks about the team, the other players. What advice he would give."

"There are times when players don't need advise and he accepts it, he says that.. if there is an experienced player he will keep quite. That is the sign of a good captain."

"He is very down to earth, very friendly with players in the dressing room and eager to help and he is good person to chat with. Even outside of cricket he has a humble personality."

Virat is a million times better than lard butt rohit
Vada pav muncher

Bumrah is still untested as captain

Former Australia cricketer Simon Katich believes that Jasprit Bumrah utilized his bowlers far better during the Perth Test than Rohit Sharma did in Adelaide, as he mentioned during a podcast:

"When you compare the two results, obviously, in Perth, Rohit Sharma missed out. And I thought Bumrah's captaincy, and particularly, the use of his bowlers in the length that they bowled, was far superior to what we saw in Adelaide. In Perth late on Day 1 when Australia were 7/67, India attacked the stumps and bowled much fuller and straighter lengths."

"Whereas, when you look at the pitch map for Adelaide, on the night of Day 1, they were a lot shorter and wider, and around the 7-8 meter mark. So they missed a trick. Rohit Sharma was at first slip; he saw it all unfold. He needs to be a bit more proactive with his quicks when that's happening. Because Australia got out of jail in that session only being one down and as a result, went on to win the Test."

Tbh, Bumrah hasn't proved anything yet in the domain of captaincy. People are in all awe for his performance in the Perth Test but we do they conveniently forgot how he let England chase 380 plus in the 4th Innings under his watch in England.

For Indians it's to easy to pin all the blame on Rohit

So u think bumrah have not improved past 2.5 years after that Test match.Eng match happened on an absolute road where 500 is achievable. Vihari dropped the bairstow catch and match too.But I think bumrah should not be the captain as he cant play all the matches.

He was inexperienced back then. That was his first assignment with no preparation. He did okay in the first innings. But what can he do when your batting apart from Pant/Jadeja fail match after match. It was on batsmen too. India had an opportunity to set a target of 500 but failed badly. Pitch got flattened out. He had no clue how to handle the situation. But in his second outing he looks vastly improved unlike Rohit who has shown zero improvement as a captain. Probably the worst Indian captain in a very very long time.

As per reports, Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the 5th Test in Sydney against Australia

Bumrah has already scored the highest score by an Indian captain in this series—15* and counting. That was how bad Rohit was in this series.

As per reports: Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be the vice-captain of India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The Indian team is different under him. It looks like Rohit's love affair has come to an end.

Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead India in Tests after Rohit Sharma's retirement, but there are a few possible contenders likely to take the lead
Jasprit Bumrah has previously led India in Test matches and is known for his leadership qualities on the field. However, concerns about his workload and injury history may influence the decision-makers. Nonetheless, his experience and tactical acumen make him a strong contender.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul has captained India across formats and has a calm demeanor that could benefit the team. His leadership experience in both international and domestic cricket adds to his credentials. While his recent form has been impressive, his fitness levels will be a factor to consider.

Rishabh Pant

Pant’s record in Test cricket strengthens his case. He has been pivotal in some of India’s most memorable red-ball victories in recent years, including series wins in Australia and competitive performances in England.

As a wicketkeeper-batter, Pant brings energy and resilience, and his on-field instincts have often been praised. He has also shown the ability to lead in pressure situations, making him a serious contender.

Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill represents the younger generation and has been earmarked for future leadership roles. His consistent performances and maturity at a young age make him a viable long-term option. Gill's experience as vice-captain in limited-overs formats adds to his leadership profile.

As per reports:

Shubman Gill has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain following Rohit's retirement from the format. With Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss some matches due to workload management, selectors are considering a long-term captain, and Gill, at 25, appears to be the frontrunner.

The squad for the five-Test tour of England, starting on June 20, will be finalized later this month. Rohit's struggles in the 2024-25 Test season and India's recent series losses influenced discussions about his successor. Bumrah, the designated vice-captain, has led in two Tests but his injury concerns have raised doubts about his availability.

Jasprit Bumrah: India bowler rules out Test captaincy, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant frontrunners for role

Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of being India's next Test captain, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant now the frontrunners, Sky Sports News understands.

It is understood Bumrah, who was favourite to take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, does not want to commit to playing all five Tests in a series due to workload.

He is unlikely to feature in all five Tests against England and selectors would prefer a captain who can consistently feature across a whole series.
