A look at the eight players in the running to win the Player of the Tournament at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (Afghanistan)

Matches 8, Wickets 17, Average 9.41, BBI 5/9

Fazalhaq Farooqi led Afghanistan’s charge in the group stages with his scintillating new ball display, picking 12 wickets from his first three games, including a career-best 5/9 versus Uganda and 4/17 in his side’s historic win over New Zealand.

Prodigious movement with the ball under lights produced great results for Farooqi, and the 23-year-old looks set to serve Afghanistan well in the coming years.

Jasprit Bumrah (India)

Matches 7, Wickets 13, Average 8.15, BBI 3/7

As if making up for the fact that he missed the last edition of the tournament due to an injury, Jasprit Bumrah has shown peak form in the tournament.

This was most visible against Pakistan in New York, where the irrepressible pacer bamboozled the opposition in each of his short spells, and guided India to a six-run win with his 3/14.

Anrich Nortje (South Africa)

Matches 8, Wickets 13, Average 13.46, BBI 4/7

Anrich Nortje’s return to international cricket in recent months has been spectacular. The speedster made the most of spicy wickets in USA, kickstarting his campaign with a 4/7 against Sri Lanka.

He’s also been effective in the West Indies, bowling a brilliant final over to secure a close win against England and getting 2/7 in the semi-final against Afghanistan.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan)

Matches 8, Runs 281, Strike-rate 124.33, Highest score 80, Dismissals 6

Along with Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz has converted Afghanistan from a bowling-centric outfit to one that can compete with the bat.

He began with a solid 76 against Uganda and continued churning important knocks in the tournament. These include match-winning efforts against New Zealand (80) and Australia (60).

Tabraiz Shamsi (South Africa)

Matches 4, 11 wickets, Average 9.27, BBI 4/19

The fact that he’s the only spinner in the list speaks volumes of Tabraiz Shamsi’s impact in the tournament. Despite being a part of a pace-heavy lineup and featuring in just four games, Shamsi has made an impact in each appearance.

He began with a stunning 4/19 against Nepal that helped the Proteas secure a close win. In his last two appearances, Shamsi has played a crucial role by picking back-to-back three-fors.

Rohit Sharma (India)

Matches 7, Runs 248, Strike Rate 155.97, Highest score 92

India skipper Rohit Sharma walked the talk of a positive approach, scoring runs at a brisk pace in all his appearances.

Despite failing in the middle stages of the tournament, Rohit didn’t change his style and helped provide his side with brilliant starts towards the business end. His best knock came against Australia where he scored 92 from just 41 balls, hitting seven fours and eight sixes, to set up a match-winning total for India.

Arshdeep Singh (India)

Matches 7, Wickets 15, Average 13, BBI 4/9

Arshdeep Singh has fulfilled the tough task of taking the new ball for India with aplomb. Barring the England semi-final, he had a wicket in every game.

Though the left-arm pacer was slightly expensive against Pakistan (1/31), he followed it up with a stunning 4/9 against the USA to restrict the North American side to a modest total that was chased down by India.

Quinton de Kock (South Africa)

Matches 8, Runs 204, Strike-rate 143.66, Highest score 74, Dismissals 7

The third opener and second wicket-keeper in this list, southpaw Quinton de Kock is the only South African with more than 150 runs in the run-up to the final.

His best knocks came in the form of his two fifties against the USA (74) and England (65), which helped South Africa seal a spot in the semi-finals.

I think it should be Rohit Sharma. Took his team to world cup glory undefeated and his own performance is also pretty good.

Bumrah bamboozled none of the Pakistan batters, they’re fear of him coupled with there lack of guts put paid to people like Rizwan who gave his wicket away!

If you take that point away, you just gave another. Imagine being someone who has cast mental damage to your opponents that they can't play you

A genius of his craft: Reflecting on Jasprit Bumrah's T20 World Cup 2024

Helping India lift the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Barbados, Jasprit Bumrah's campaign was capped off by Aramco Player of the Tournament accolades.

Jasprit Bumrah's T20 World Cup 2024 will go down in history as one of the greatest individual campaigns ever seen in the event's history.

Collecting 15 wickets at an average of 8.26, Bumrah finished with an astonishing economy of just 4.17, by far and away the best rate of those to bowl a minimum of 20 overs at the tournament. He joins teammate Virat Kohli (a two-time winner) as India players to claim the Player of the Tournament award.

From the glitz of New York in the north to toil of Guyana in the south and culminating with silverware in Barbados, we take a look at his all-conquering campaign.

Coming up big in the Big Apple

India began their tournament stateside at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, and while bowlers enjoyed their share of the spoils on a friendly surface, Bumrah remained a point of difference.

The right-armer's first three overs of the tournament against Ireland leaked just six runs, claiming wickets of Harry Tector and Josh Little, holding their opponents to just 96. The quick was crowned Player of the Match for his efforts, a feat he then matched in perhaps a more pivotal performance against Pakistan four days later.

Defending just 119, Bumrah struck to remove Babar Azam inside the Powerplay, finding the opposing skipper's outside edge and into the hands of Suryakumar Yadav. He returned to beat Mohammad Rizwan in what proved to be the match's turning point, before deceiving Iftikhar Ahmed to finish with figures of 3/14 (4), conceding just the one boundary.

Putting the 'Super' in Super Eights

Across the 12 overs bowled in the Super Eight phase of the tournament, and across three grounds, Bumrah finished with 6/49 in a four day stretch to help India top of the group.

Afghanistan's batters had no answer against him in the Barbados, with both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai undone by change-of-pace deliveries to fall inside the Powerplay. He returned to remove Najibullah Zadran, conceding just seven in his four overs in another victory.

The India camp then moved to Antigua to face Bangladesh, with Bumrah this time doing his damage at the backend to prevent any late challenge of his side's 196. More off-pace bowling was the order to remove opposition skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, before he hurried up Rishad Hossain for his second to finish with 2/13.

Runs flowed in India's final Super Eights match, taking on Australia in St Lucia, and it was Bumrah's expertise at the death that again pulled his side through.

As the Australians looked to make one final launch for India's 205/5, the in-form Travis Head was stymied by Bumrah, whose dipping off-cutter in the 17th over forced a miscue to Rohit Sharma to all but seal India's top-spot finish.

Stepping up: Sealing silverware with strong semi, final performances

Not one to shy away from the big occasion, Bumrah was a presence in both India's semi-final win against England in Guyana, and in the finale against the Proteas to lift the trophy in Barbados.

Teaming up with the left-arm orthodox of Axar Patel at the other end, Bumrah consigned the English to 34/2 in the fifth over, beating Phil Salt and making a mess of the stumps, again with an off-cutter almost too hard to pick out of his hand.

The opening spell set the tone for India, who held the English at bay in the chase, and the quick returned to trap Jofra Archer lbw to seal India's final ticket.

As his teammates posted 176/7 in the final against South Africa in Bridgetown, Bumrah went to work in the second over of India's bowling effort, and arguably saved his best for last with a dream dismissal of Reeza Hendricks with his third delivery.

Belying his bowling action - which points to moving the ball into the right hander - Bumrah managed to swing the ball away from Hendricks at pace, squaring the opener up before hitting the top of his off-stump.

Then, with South Africa needing 21 from the final 15 balls, Bumrah nipped one back between Marco Jansen's bat and pad to leave the Proteas six down and ultimately too far behind in the contest.

He finished with 2/18 (4), as India closed out a seven-run win.

Sam Curran in that list lol feels like such an odd man out. Embarrassing how Pak batters gave him wickets in the final.

na, he was good. He bowled some quality balls through the tournament.

I think Fazalhaq could had been the player of tournament here maybe

That's what wasim used to do to India in 90s.

Bumrah is doing the Same

Bumrah has taken his game to a greater level in the last few years where it’s been evident that he can deliver in the big tournament. You know you have reached that level when you come in to bowl 2 overs when 29 runs are needed from 29 deliveries with 6 wickets in hand and you give absolutely nothing away.

A well deserved MOTT for him.
One of the greatest bowlers of all time.

Bumrah was the true diffence maker, teams just had a hard time putting him away or playing him. Full credit to Bumrah and well deserved. He bowled like a champion this tournament

Don't agree that Bumrah > Akram but yes, Akram wasn't as consistent as Bumrah is.
In limited overs yes, but way to go in test. In limited overs, Bumrah is harder to hit than Wasim and picks up wickets quicker than Wasim. In test, he needs some more match changing spells despite giving better output than Wasim in 30-40 tests so far.

Every time Bumrah bowls batsmen looks clueless and seems to be picking up wicket in all of of his delivery. I only seen him get smashed once by Fakher Zaman in CT 2017, but I guess he was a novice back then.

So what makes him very difficult to hit? I am guessing the angle he bowls due to his sling action?

His weird action. Ball ends up at an awkward height at a great pace. There is swing too.

Every delivery of Bumrah was an event in this world cup. Except USA tail, Gurbaz and Travis Head, no one even tried to attack him. And he got them. Many just wanted to play him out. He got them too. He turned games at the start, in the middle overs and at death. His deliveries swung, reverse swung, cut, seamed, and bounced. As someone in the commentary box said, he knows how to bowl every type of delivery but the best part was he knew when to bowl what and had full control over it. Add some of Arshdeep's, Pandya's wickets to Bumrah's tally too

Your last line is a reason. People always think it comes into you. Then it decks back every so slowly. None explains that better than this spell against West INdies in the tests. He reduced them to 37/7 with 5 for 7 . Watch out his clean bowled dismissals. It would appear to be leaving. But it would come back

I never watched Hadlee, never watched Wasim , never watched Ambrose. But I have been lucky enough to watch Bumrah live. And I haven't seen anyone else having this high a level of skill and intelligence. I have never seen bowling like this and I probably never will.

The Greatest India ever produced.

Ambrose and Walsh were a treat to watch. There were spells when Ambrose was literally impossible to hit. I didn't see that match but once he took 7 wickets for a single run

Very late release resulting in less time for batsmen to react and dangerous bouncers if batsmen tries to come up, ability to swing and seam both ways at a high speed, slower balls without change in action and most importantly very good control. It's always a combination of many things and not just one thing which makes it hard to play.

Didn't watch Hadlee but watched the other 2. Were out of the world.

Bumrah >>>> Akram

Akram could bowl some magic spells but he was not consistent. I remember plenty of spells where he got smacked around.
Bumrah got thrashed around by Travis head against australia and got smacked in the final last year as well.

He has gone for plenty here and their. He's > Akram by any means. He's > Waqar younis as a bowler though, Easily.

I meant to say he's not > Akram

My abiding memory of Akram is being hit to all parts of Hobart by Gilly and Langer in 1999 test.
And my abiding memory is bumrah being hit across all parts by fakhar and Travis?

I don't see how that's really relevant. Every bowler will have some days or even series where their thrashed around.

Akram had many.

I have a feeling people will now pick Bumrah over Akram, if selecting an all format world XI. He has done enough to deserve it.

One of my favorite Bumrah spells and series. Literally half of his wickets that tour were magic, unplayable stuff.

In tests yes. Even in LOi it looks very much like a possibility. Definitely already above waqar and imran.

It's really between wasim and bumrah for the top spot.

One more icc trophy and most likely he will take the top spot. Currently number 2 for me.

In tests he needs to either win a wtc or help india win a series in SA and England. Then it would put him amongst the best ever list.
