Title is self explanatory. Two greats of the Indian cinema. As a lyricist if you had to choose between these two, who would you go for?

Javed Akhtar is also very good lyricist . But Gulzar is more versatile .

The kind of words that Gulzar uses is very different. He uses farsi as well. Moreover Gulzar sahab , some of his lyrics have his clear cut stamps , takes the lyrics to another level. Those lines only he can write.

Both average.

Neither can complete with Sahir Ludhiyanvi.

Lol. Ludhianvi used to write songs for the tangawallas and losers wallowing in self pity.

Sampooran was a ghalib wannabe..used to put some ordinary words where they were not needed to create an element of surprise. words like takiya, chaadar, takiye ki rui..sardi ki dhoop. Also penned the song which promotes eve teasing which is sung by middle aged men at parties. huzoor is kadar..

Javed Akhtar sahab is a class apart. He could pen a song after hearing the tune meant for the song. Like he did for Mr India's kaate nahi kat-tay.. He was given the tune first and had to weave his magic around that.

Why do you think he changed his name?

Purely aesthetic reasons, you will be surprised to find out many of your favorite writers, poets etc write/wrote under pen names. Gulzar just sounds more exotic especially since a lot of his poetry has Urdu/Farsi/Arabic words in them. A name like Sampooran (no offence) would have killed all the mystery.

I don't think he did for those reasons,as per I read long ago(unable to Google) it was due to his father and brother not in favor of him indulging in the same activity.

He directed and wrote songs for Machis. Lyrics of chodh aaye hum wo galiyaan were just mesmerizing.

It was awesome movie can't believe it didn't do well, but his movies of 70s are better, Aandhi, Angoor(comedy of errors), Koshish,Mere Aapne, Achanak.

He worked with Hrishikesh Mukherjee initially and that is something that refelective in his direction as well.

He out and out admires Bengali culture and their literature even though his pen name was Gulzar, probably a reason he made a series on Ghalib as well.

Sampooran has been a beneficiary of the myth that urdu is a language of the refined. While poems in Sanskritized hindi are looked down upon, even the shallow poems in urdu get admired because urdu. Self serving cabal trying to impose their cultural domination on unsuspecting natives. The moment you say you like Sanskrit you are tagged as an intolerant, and if you say you love Urdu you become secular.

That's your insecurity and nothing else. Hindi Kavita even now is one of the famous channels on YouTube featuring many artists reciting em.

The only reason Urdu gained so much momentum was because most of the lyricist knew that language and unfortunately after partition, many coming from that side only knew how to write Shahmukh script (including my grandfather) but was taught devanagari and shudh Hindi by my grandmother after marriage as she became a Hindi teacher.

Now you can go on blaming the Muhajirs for commercializing it , although Amitabh Bachan did help reverse it in terms of actors but he cannot write lyrics.

Ghalib was a rare gem, didn't expect anything less from Naseeruddin Shah, Jagjit Singh was brilliant as always but was surprised by the direction/screenplay of Gulzar am not so sure about the music but it is one of the best OST's out there .

Many of the songs are perfect for me when depressed or for a rainy afternoon coupled with chai.

Although coming back to the topic at hand, even Ghalib's real name was Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan.

Court Summons Javed Akhtar Over RSS Remarks, Next Hearing On February 6

A Mumbai court on Tuesday issued summons to veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar in connection with a defamation case filed by a lawyer over his alleged remarks against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) made during a television interview last year.

The lawyer, Santosh Dubey, had in October last year filed a complaint against the 77-year-old lyricist-poet before the metropolitan magistrate court at suburban Mulund under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation).

Mr Akhtar, in the TV interview, had allegedly drawn parallels between the Taliban and Hindu extremists in the backdrop of the radical outfit seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

The complainant, who claims to be an RSS supporter, alleged the former Rajya Sabha member, with a view to score political points, unnecessarily dragged the name of the Nagpur-headquartered organisation in the row and defamed it in a "calculated and well planned manner".

The statement made by the accused during the interview was a "well planned" move to defame the RSS as well as to "discourage and misguide people" who have joined the organisation or would like to join it, lawyer Mr Dubey had alleged.

After hearing a brief argument and on perusal of documents on record, metropolitan magistrate P K Raut issued process (summons) to Mr Akhtar.

The matter was adjourned to February 6, the date on which Akhtar has to appear in the court, said the complainant.
