Legendary Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad believes veteran left-arm fast bowler Wasim Akram should be considered for the coaching job. His comments came to the forth after the speculations are at rife that Pakistan’s head coach Mickey Arthur might fail to extend his tenure.
Miandad in his interview reiterated that other countries are availing the services of their very own legends. He further questions why they being as Pakistanis can’t afford to avail their services.
“Look the world is availing from the expertise of Wasim Akram and our other players as they tell their players practically through demonstrations how to remove faults and improve [their] performance. Their tips are doing wonders. So, if other nations are availing from their expertise why can’t we ourselves benefit from our former great cricketers?” Miandad told AFP.
Recently, Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side has failed to secure a semi-final spot during the twelfth edition of the ICC World Cup 2019 in the United Kingdom (UK).
Interestingly, Miandad has himself served himself Pakistan as a batting coach in 2011. He maintained that the local heroes should not be made to work under a foreign coach in the top-flight cricket.
“If you feel their appointment is imperative then send them to the cricket academies. Don’t make your own greats players work under them (foreign coaches) at the highest level,” Miandad stated.
With Miandad backing local stars to coach Pakistan, he believes there should be conditions set for the particular posts. He added if local coaches don’t meet the criteria, then they’re supposed to avail services of a foreign coach.
However, he stressed that if they meet the criteria, then it is sheer injustice for signing a deal with a foreign professional coach.
“They’ll at once jump to take the credit if players perform well under them. But if they (players) [fare] poorly in some international event, they put the blame on the players, saying they (players) are unwilling to learn and improve their skills. You can hire the services of a foreign professional coach if you don’t have experts in that field. But if you have more competent people at home for that slot, then it would not be fair to rope in a foreigner,” Miandad added.
In the technology-driven era, the coaches have further opted for digitally-based methodologies. He also conceded that if the coaches are trained who don’t have access to technology, they will undoubtedly bring a change.
The 62-year-old Karachi-based cricketer has admitted the fact that technology has its merits and has been on the rise in other countries. But he reiterated that in Pakistan the system is pretty different. He further suggested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that they require trainers at the top level rather than coaches.
“True, digital coaching has worked a lot in foreign countries. But there is a hell of a difference between their systems and that of ours. That is why I say we need trainers at the senior level and not coaches,” Miandad said.
Miandad had represented Pakistan between 1975 and 1996. He featured in 233 ODIs and 124 Tests for Pakistan.
