Jayalalitha: The photograph 'ruling' an Indian state

The photograph of Jayalalitha at a cabinet meeting in Tamil Nadu

How is ailing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalitha still ruling the southern Indian state?

She has been in hospital since 22 September, and anxiety about her health has grown in the absence of clear information about her condition.

Her party, the AIADMK, which forms the state government, recently announced that she had transferred all her portfolios to her deputy OP Panneerselvam, who has stood in for her in the past. However, it was made very clear that she would remain chief minister.

So how then does her cabinet meet in her absence?

They seem to have found a neat workaround - a photograph.
An official picture released by the state government shows Mr Panneerselvam at a cabinet meeting with a framed photograph of Ms Jayalalitha prominently placed before him. And it's not just cabinet meetings that the photograph is attending. It is also present at review meetings of several ministries.

Comedian and actor TM Karthik says this could be one way the state government is responding to the constant clamour for photographs of Ms Jayalalitha as "proof" that she is well.

He says that the next move would be to release her most famous "pictures" - alluding to some of the more celebrated films she has acted in - every Friday.

"Why do they keep the chief's pictures in their meetings? Well, a picture can speak a thousand words, slightly less than what the real would," he said.

Not everyone finds the development amusing though.

"This is sycophancy at its worst. I have never seen or heard of anything like this in a cabinet meeting in my career,'' political analyst, G Satyamoorty, told BBC Hindi. ``What they are saying is that we are sworn into office in the name of Amma and not the Constitution,'' he added.

The photograph is probably doing a better job at governing than the politicians. :))

So she is the kim jong un of Tamil nadu. Worshipping of politicians in some countries is cringeworthy.

Tamil Nadu is one of the best governed states though. JJ is an excellent example of a benevolent dictator.

He he..This is not even close. There are other things that will blow you away if you see that.:yk

  Still probably looting millions of dollars but she is definitely less corrupt than Karunanidhi who loots 100s of millions of dollars  .

Well it would be pretty difficult for a photograph to be corrupt and loot the populace, but then perhaps that's the appeal. The concept isn't as crazy as it appears.

Definitely. His family is the most corrupt family after Nehru-Gandhi family.

One of his minister alone looted $300,000,000 LOL. These guys are disgusting pigs. But people are dumb, they will never elect a reputable, deserving contestant. Just wait till Indian next generation mature in 15 to 20 years.

She is actually in the hospital for about a month, she has been in the power in and out since 1989. Usually her and another scoundrel take turns each term, this time she has won back to back. She is no saint but a better politician than the other guy. She was also a movie actress once and her rival was a movie actor as well.

The ideology of Periyar that the DMK supposedly ascribe to has a lot of supporters in TN. All DMK need to do is whip up some chauvinistic rhetoric and people will vote for them in droves. Sad state of affairs but that's the reality there.

TN elections and leaders are a joke nowadays, extremely caste oriented ,the previous time they could had forgiven Karuna for corruption but he messed up the law and order situation very bad, women didn't feel safe under his leadership and rightly was shown the door.

Amma is terrible as well and being from Chennai i rather have DMK than Amma but i can see the reasons why people vote for Amma rather than Karuna in other areas of TN.

Ain't nobody got time for Periyar. Everyone either don't vote or vote one out of the two politician who is more likely to win. I know a politicianin India who used to drive around an Ambassador car, now his parking lot is filled with an Aston Martins and a 7 Series BMW. He only takes his Ambassador car out to the assembly lol.

South India and in particular, Tamil Nadu are fascinating places to me always in pretty much every aspect. Hopefully one day I'll get to visit it

I would like to know why ? I prefer Amma as she is a less of a pushover, and actually crimes were pretty very minimal when she was in power (at least in Trichy). It wasn't easy to bribe police official back in the day when she was in power, when Karuna came, things went upside down. Things were worse in Madurai areas where Alagiri, who has beef with his step brother Stalin, ran the city with goons.

Actually Periyar's was DK ,Annaidurai a politician separated from DK with DMK and funding and went soft on Tamil Nationalism and focused on Tamil regionalism which is what people voted for a line somehwere in between.

DMK's infrastructure projects for Chennai are better than Amma's ,ease of business is easier and doesn't close down a project just because it was started by Amma.
Law and order almost remains the same in Chennai as its a metro.

I'm pretty sure Jayalalitha is dead and they keep putting off the announcement to avoid the mass suicides amongst her devotees that will eventually follow. Just a theory of mine.

How autonomous are different states in India

Like what can modi do which would effect Tamil Nadu on a micro level. (Like effect people's daily lives)

Also has there ever been a PM from TN or Kerala?

Its federal level, they could decide their taxes previously but now there is going to be a common tax regime with 4 slabs in the upcoming qtr.

They can decide on the languages, govn, police, education(state ones),subsidies(on certain things),Govn officials(on state level) and all those matters.

Central govn decides finances on a national level for example can increase or decrease prize of electronics, gold, subsidies create a bid for spectrums decide on railways etc all those things will have effect on Micro level.

No PM from TN or Kerala but there have been presidents and one PM from Karanataka(not for long though).

Lol it was a rumour circulating wildly few days ago. Everyone was fearing it's gonna be carnage in the roads. But I'm pretty sure that's not the case.

Imo it's the safest state for women in India, people are straight forward, they respect your privacy.

Probably better than any Britisj Raj states up north. South > North. Both are better than West Bengal, even Mogadishu is better than West Bengal.

South is definitely not better than North. This is coming from someone who was brought up in South and now I have moved to North.

South especially TN is so restrictive in its culture. While they are not aggressive or anything they don't really gel well with people who aren't southies.

You come down south, you learn our language, we don't tolerate barbaric practices, we eat pork, drink alcohol and show our face..........wait never mind, let me correct myself.

In South, we eat rice and dosa, not rotti, we watch Rajnikanth movies not Sharukaur or what ever that 50 year old guy pretending to be a 25 year old's name is. We don't do Dandya, we do Dandanakka, we don't like handsome heroes we like either fat, mentally unstable or malnourished looking dark unappealing men chasing light skinned beautiful actresses to fulfill the fantasy of romancing with a North Indian girl which would never come true in real life. We don't vote for authentic politicians with history, we vote for people who have history of acting in movies and make them a politicians. We also oppress women in the name of "culture " and "tradition". Maybe Northies are weird so the Southies are repelled by them ? Enough racist comments for me today.

Thivagar Last time i checked most of kollywood actress are from Kerala. I think u are talking about Tollywood here.

And yeah who is "we" here.

We also get North Indian actress. Kajal Agarwal is my favourite, Namitha used to be my favourite . North Indian actresses generally act in more edgy/western roles, while South Indian actresses generally act in more "traditional" "conservative" "decent girl" roles. Pretty much sums the mentality in TN.

"we" = South Indians, I filled my part for Tamil Nadu, now you add, then we'll get Kaayal to add some in behalf of the Malayalees and that is how it goes.

Ironically that's what guys down south think too.

You bring a hindi speaking north indian and an urdu speaking Pakistani and I can barely diffentiate.

Unless of course if the said Pakistani has typical Pakistani looks - blonde hair, blue eyes and good facial features.:srini

South especially TN is so restrictive in its culture. While they are not aggressive or anything they don't really gel well with people who aren't southies.

What do you mean by "restrictive" in culture? Girls wear here churidhar mostly instead of sleeveless tops or flashy tee shirts. Then again, it's common in Kerala as well. Don't think it's "restrictive" in any way, they don't wear it because of cultural restrictions. They wear it because they are comfortable in it. I don't think you can brand a girl "loose in moral character" just because she wears modern dresses or "restrictive in culture" just because she happens to wear authentic dresses. They wear whatever they wear just because they are comfortable in it. Nightlife is definitely present here but is nowhere near when compared to the other metros. If you're someone who loves the nightlife, Chennai is not the best place for you.

I think the gelling part is true all over India. You find it difficult to gel with people when you have a communication problem. What happens is when someone comes from the north, they don't know tamil and find it difficult to interact. Hence they mostly stick with the guys knowing hindi. Not many other guys know hindi and so they find it difficult to interact with the other group. It's simply a case of communication gap. If you know even a bit of the local language, you can quite easily gel with the people. JaDed probably knows that better than anyone else here. Forget north indians, there is a nepali girl who is a famous anchor in a popular comedy channel in TN. She came to India to study in a women's college in Chennai and she became a VJ by chance and has now even started acting in films. Difference is that she is more fluent in tamil than a local.

Typical inferiority complex. No wonder you people give preference to Sindhi imports like Tamanna over your local 'beauties'.

Its a well documented fact that tamilians and madrasis hate north Indians from the core(reasons ranging from being ashamed of their average looks to their awful food). One should read the critically acclaimed novel 2 states from Chetan Bhagat to know the horrors faced by north Indians in south and how discriminated we northies are in the land of idli and dosa.Should be seceded asap.

You guys should actually feel happy that you get to eat something different apart from the daily roti and dal chawal.:srini

Same case in bollywood. Preference given to half whites and other foreign actress then. Same story everywhere.

What is wrong with you? Why do you bring North Vs South angle in every thread?

But since you mentioned it, staying in South India for more than a week will be nightmarish for most North Indians. Many of my friends declined admissions to prestigious South Indian colleges simply because it was "South India".

For decades, Bollywood actresses have been 100% Indian, and the recent increase in foreign imports is down to globalization. South Indian industry in comparison have always suffered from this inferiority complex where they have been too ashamed to cast their own.

I respect them for choosing their own male leads, but why do females have to be chosen from outside states?

Thivagar i noticed this too why are u unnecessarily making it about north/south.?
Zak_Fan Look you have your prejudice about south indians. But just because your friends have declined does not mean everyone is the same if that was the case. Hyderabad and Bangalore would not have so many north indians. Plus the poor migrant folks don't have the luxury of choices like you do. They go wherever they can make money.

This is a weird post.

Wow Just Wow. Were you born just yesterday or something! How old are you?.100 % indian or not but they came from different states not just from north India. Seriously how deluded can you be? Then why were actresses in the past and even so many now from south india/bengal. Ilena dsouza genelia etc they have acted in bollywood there are goan in origin. Rambha even acted in bhojpuri movies. How can they can act in bollwyood but your girls can't act in south. And who told you all actresss in south are from North. There are south indians as well. most are. Wow Globalization !

Little bit, yes. But I am only touching upon the subject because it seems to be coming up a lot in multiple threads. Too much North India bashing everywhere.

So Bollywood which casts beautiful Indian actresses from all parts of India (and sometimes from outside) is fine

BUT South Indian movies casting any Northie actress (any actress that isn't a Southie is a northie only :)) ) is inferiority complex?

You know what's the common denominator in both Bollywood and South Indian movies?

Its NOT inferiority complex. Its the need to have pretty babes.

When Bollywood starts casting everyday average females as actresses then we can discuss about South's inferiority complex.

So if I go to Delhi or any Northie place, talk in Tamil, Malayalam or Telugu and try to make a lot of friends....I would gel well?

People will accept me with open hands and become my friends?

Pakistanis seem to be enjoying our posts, so let's stop fighting guys. :hug

I would accept you with open arms as long as you look like Shruti hassan and don't poke your nose in my internal matters which most malyalyis are renowned for.

I went to chennai once for some work, was supposed to be 10 days trip I came back in 3 could not survive the climate, the people and the food..

Please don't add to this north-south divide. We are all one and can learn good things from each other. Pains me to see some people still discriminate based on place of birth or skin color.

Come on CC, it pains me when people call you a traitor and a bangladeshi migrant. Show the world that you are not less than a Patriotic Indian by changing that flag to an Indian one first.;-)

What is the weird fascination of south Indian men with big mustaches?

Weird for you, but you are just one person who thinks his choices and lifestyle is normal, and any deviation from that is weird. Learn to have an open mind, don't see the world through your narrow parameters of normal and weird.

Flag is just a bit of colored cloth used by the governments to shrink wrap people's minds and then used to shroud the dead.

Putting aside the politics and the tensions created by politicians and the media, it would appear that, going by the posts in this thread, the differences between Indians in different parts of India (eg North versus South) are greater than those between Pakistanis and Indians, and were it not for politics, the average Indian will get along far better with a Pakistani than with another Indian from a different region of India.

Wrong or correct?

Of course, its normal for them. And it was normal in north India (and in many countries too ) in 80s and 90s when you would see most of men growing mustache. Fashion statements change with time and then came the clean shaven look and now beard is back. South Indians have stuck with taches. Is it a cultural thing?

My personal opinion is this most of the fights occur online only. Not in real life. I have never seen any tension between north and south and for that matter between other indians. But yes mumbai has issues with biharis etc.

Chennai is not whole of south india and most of the south indians do speak hindi(atleast passable hindi) also all south indians do not speak the same language so even them going to chennai and living is also difficult many times except that he may/she not crib about it so much as some north indians here do. Plus like i said most of the stuff happens online. The reality is very different. Yes for an average punjabi it may be easier to bond with pakistani pubjabi. But the same time he can also easily bond with tamil that is if he chooses or not it is his attitude and most north indians do not display negative attitude. In the end we bond because we live together.Places like bangalore mumbai pune etc develop new unique culture because of this mixed migrant population.

For my part i can bond with anyone including pakistanis and that basically depends on attitude and exposure to other communities. Even if there is no exposure most when they meet make an effort especially since they may have to spend more time/years in a new state.

The only thing i dislike about North indians as well as pakistanis is their racism but even that i can say exists online only. I wonder why i don't meet such people in real life and why only online??

My opinion is average Indian gets along well with an average indian from different region as well as with Pakistani. Remember one thing most pakistanis and Indians meet in foreign countries where they cannot exhibit their prejudice if it exists the host country will not tolerate it and also remember one thing it is north indians who actually hate pakistanis more than south or any other indian. Most regions do not have an obsession with pakistan as say North india.

I would not mind if South India secede away from Present India. The only reason south does not secede is because they are doing well economically and socially and do not face any kind of discrimination in present union of India. Most of the discrimination if u want to call it that happens online in the form of racial abuse related to skin color.

Hope this explains.

Really. I don't see telugu men with mustaches here that much. And what makes u think it is only south indians who sport it. Don't go by bollywood. Most Indian men do sport mustache from different regions and i have met many pakistanis too with it. U need to get out of chennai streety.

Good post. But just to lend it some much required balance, let's not forget about South Indians who are actually as racist. According to many posters here, "sense", "manners" and "intellect" are qualities exclusive to South Indians, and Northies are just weird, loud and hateful.

Actually, if I think of last many threads, the guy turning normal threads into North Vs South flame war has been a southern anna. Thivagar

Cultural doesn't mean everyone will have it. Was talking more about the older generation anyway. The younger generation likes the stubble more even here.
