We’ve all been there. You’ve had hair done over the weekend – maybe a little shape-up or some frosted tips. Maybe you just got rid of your bangs. You walk into the office on Monday morning, feeling like a million bucks. And no one says a thing. They haven’t even noticed. Fuming. What’s the point?

Well, we’re sure then that you’ll be able to empathise with Jesse Lingard and Wilfried Zaha, who are not happy that the avatars representing them in footy games, haven’t had a new trim for a while. Pro Evo have waded in and replied too.

Yet this is nothing new, other footballers have publicly stated they are not overly impressed by their appearance in games.

A couple of years ago, Sami Khedira was moved to speak out after game designers continued to pay no attention to his new do for two years.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Hey <a href="https://twitter.com/EASPORTSFIFA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@EASPORTSFIFA</a> , I'm really glad you like my long hair... but I'm wearing it short for almost two years now... 🙄😄💇🏻*♂ <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/FIFA18?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#FIFA18</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SK6?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#SK6</a> <a href="https://t.co/0MHsBZk3Bp">pic.twitter.com/0MHsBZk3Bp</a></p>— Sami Khedira (@SamiKhedira) <a href="https://twitter.com/SamiKhedira/status/918406369627295744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 12, 2017</a></blockquote>

Football computer games have come a long way since Pele’s Soccer, which came out on the Atari in 1981 and represented football players with blobs of solid colour, like some kind of exercise in abstract expressionism.

These days, players in computer games mostly look uncannily close to the original. Nevertheless, not everyone is always pleased with their likeness.

For instance, Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy wasn’t too sure about the likeness that designers had created for him.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Why do I look like Emile Heskey 🤔 <a href="https://t.co/C5tanleasn">https://t.co/C5tanleasn</a></p>— Benjamin Mendy (@benmendy23) <a href="https://twitter.com/benmendy23/status/910463950613024768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 20, 2017</a></blockquote>

Remember FIFA Street – that odd little foray from the people behind the main game into street football? It remains one of the great mysteries of the modern day how Peter Crouch managed to make it onto the front cover, in the company of Ronaldinho and Gattuso.

Stranger still is this characterisation of him.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">To this day I still can't understand how Peter Crouch made it on the cover of FIFA Street 3... It’s fair to say that the creators exercised creative licence and came up short - but the struggle is real and industry-wide. Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 was like a little shop of horrors – full of the furniture of your nightmares.

Look at Kyle Walker!

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Remember when Kyle Walker looked like Hollow Man in Pro Evo? 😂😂😂 <a href="https://t.co/an90ruDFxU">pic.twitter.com/an90ruDFxU</a></p>— 101 Great Goals (@101greatgoals) <a href="https://twitter.com/101greatgoals/status/848134002645053440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 1, 2017</a></blockquote>

Jeepers. Why does he have no eyes?

Or Rafael, who appears to be channelling Russell Brand circa 2007.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The question is, is Rafael on the move? Must be annoying when folk can’t get it right hey?

On the other hand, there are times when you don’t want your likeness anywhere near a product. In 2015, it was reported that Bastian Schweinsteiger considered legal action against a Chinese toy-maker for creating this doll in a Nazi uniform that bore a striking resemblance to him. It was called Bastian.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Bastian Schweinsteiger to sue toy company over Nazi doll called 'Bastian' <a href="https://t.co/BkDp0PYSEE">https://t.co/BkDp0PYSEE</a> <a href="https://t.co/2nhGhDeTGe">pic.twitter.com/2nhGhDeTGe</a></p>— The Telegraph (@Telegraph) <a href="https://twitter.com/Telegraph/status/657215963885129729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 22, 2015</a></blockquote>

A spokesman for the company claimed the likeness was purely coincidental.

Crikey. That’s definitely worse than not getting your new hairstyle noticed.
