It's just the latest example of religiously-motivated unusual behavior involving airports and planes.

A group of young Hasidic Jewish men was seen traveling through an airport blindfolded, apparently so they would not be exposed to the potential sight of ‘immodestly’ dressed women.

Reddit user ‘thenewyorkgod’ posted the image Monday morning, which has since amassed over 5000 comments. Most of the commenters expressed shock over such conduct, but some of the users have been posting their own similar experiences or pointing out how common these occurrences are.

In 2013, an Orthodox Jewish man completely covered himself in plastic sheeting during a flight to avoid being exposed to the dead should the plane fly over a cemetery.

This man was believed to be a Kohein, who are religious descendants of the priests of ancient Israel. Kohanim are banned from having any sort of contact with the dead in order to remain pure. This includes visiting cemeteries or even flying over them.

To try to save themselves, Kohanim employ a controversial solution that is not entirely allowed in the church — wrapping themselves in plastic bags. The bag is said to create a sort of barrier between the individual and the ‘tumah,’ or surrounding impurities.

The controversy exists mostly due to safety concerns. Even if they can be seatbelted in, the passenger wouldn’t be able to reach an oxygen mask or escape from the plane quickly if an emergency situation were to occur.

In addition, the question remains as to how they can breathe, as air holes are not allowed in the bag because they would invalidate the barrier.

In 2015, another controversy arose when a Hasidic man refused to sit next to a woman on a plane because she was a woman not related to him.

Laura Heywood was flying from San Diego to London in the middle seat while her husband sat in the aisle side. The window seat originally belonged to a man who happened to be a Hasidic Jew.

The man refused the seat as his faith prevented him from sitting next to any woman who wasn’t his wife. He asked the couple to switch places, but Heywood, believing the man’s request to be sexist, refused.

The flight ended up being delayed due to the disagreement.

Even fellow members of the Jewish faith find instances like these to be confusing.

Jeremy Newberger, a passenger who witnessed a similar episode on a New York to Israel flight, expressed his concern over the issue.

“I grew up Conservative, and I’m sympathetic to Orthodox Jews,” he said to the New York Times. “But this Hasid came on, looking very uncomfortable, and wouldn’t even talk to the woman, and there was five to eight minutes of ‘What’s going to happen?’ before the woman acquiesced and said, ‘I’ll move.’ It felt like he was being a yutz.”

Yea because they got no control over their eyes.
:yk

I do Alhamdulillah :moyo2

Why cant they simply lower their gaze if they have such a problem?

Just seems like an attention seeking gimmick. All ultra religious people are guilty of it.

May be this kind of blind folds will finally liberate woman and let them choose what they want to wear?

Hiding their eyes, no security concerns?

obviously if that were the case, they would have been halted by the security. But if they are following their religion then nothing harm in it to be ok as long as its not causing any harm to their surroundings

Women can’t wear niqab in some European countries now, what harm are they causing to their surroundings if they want to wear it?

its a ridiculous law to start with. If they can make sure (which they can) that there is no threat by having the get checked by policewomen. It's not a big fuss, its just political motivated actions

And some see it as ridiculous to cover your entire body when in public, there is no reasonable purpose to do this.

people will always find ways to hate and discourage the things they don't like personally. women didn't started wearing hijab in 2k but its problem for them now because of their disliking towards muslims or the religion

What people hate is people coming into their community and doing things that the community find offensive. Weather thats women going to islamic countries and wearing western clothes or muslim women going to western countries and wearing burkahs.

exactly, its a two way train. Most westerners are against it because they see some muslim countries where wearing their type of outfits are banned. But only sensible ones who actually believe in freedom of religion understands that this wouldn't solve anything and will only give birth to more chaos and unrest among people

If a community find niqab offensive then I wonder what a community felt when their own land for thousands of years were suddenly taken...

:))

You do know the history of Australia?

An entire race of people were wiped off the face of the Earth in Tasmania. Foreigners dint just come dressed in alien attire but came to kill and conquer.

I think this would have been a bit more offensive to the community.

Aussies are the last people who should be preaching about others coming and offending the communities already present.

I am sick of this argument that people have the right to see someones face, and that is why they don't want niqab. What if I want to see legs and get offended by any clothing below the knee?

The other argument of security risk has its merits (but gets exposed when similar head gear is excused). Not that I have a problem with burqa ban..but lets call it what it is..cultural arrogance and passive xenophobia of the western nations.

You mean like sailors and convicts from tens of thousands of miles away arriving and 'discovering' your lands and claiming them for themselves, whilst also destroying your communities and your way of life?

I see this as a compliment, you need to go back 300 years to find something that you can try to discredit Australians.

Quite ridiculous, but hey, as long as it's their choice and not being forced to then I suppose it's harmless.

Please also see post #22 where this all started. And your reply here is probably one of the worst I have ever seen here at PP. So it’s all about letting time heal the wounds? Come 23rd century germans will proudly talk about Holocaust and how many years it would have been since it happend?
And no would even mention ISIS in the 24th century...

Its more about the stupidity of trying to burden someone with the actions of a foreign country from 300 hundred years ago.

You mean as you are doing considering that the vast majority of Muslims in countries like Germany, France, UK and even the USA are 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th generation (or even more) born and bred in those countries? Or are you putting a minimum time frame as to how far back you go? I'm betting that a significant percentage of current Australians have far less ancestral history in Australia compared with many millions of Muslims living in the UK, Germany, France, USA and the like having ancestral history in those countries.

In your case. a case of the pot calling the kettle black me thinks. I believe in some places they refer to it as hypocrisy.

I dont understand how someone can think a small amount of women a certain attire can offend a nation which was created on genocide and which in the last 100 years have flown soldiers to all parts of the world killing the local communities. Strange logic some people have.

The only reason Islam spread to South Asia so rapidly was due to Arab conquest.
Nobody is innocent.

Indonesia which until recently had the biggest Muslim population wasnt down to any conquest.

Conquests do change peoples identities. What about America, Australia and others where Christianity is present. What do you think this was down to singing carols to the natives?

I can give you a short history in my ancestry not that I think it will do any good because of your ignorance of anyone with white skin. My great great great grand father died at age 41 near London due to working in coalmines, his wife unable to care for six children sent my great great grandfather with two siblings to Australia to work for a produce company. The produce company owned my great great grandfather for two years to pay for his passage to Australia. Upon completion of his time he worked another 15 years to save enough to buy a farm. His farm was taken from him by the british government for non payment of taxes after 5 years. Severe drought and increased taxes due to the drought made it impossible for him to pay taxes and feed his family. He died in a tent in Bendigo gold diggings, his son which is my great grandfather continued to prospect for gold but could not afford to pay the taxes (miners rights) and was pushed further and further into the bush eventually walking his family from Bendigo to Adelaide where he died of starvation. His son my grandfather met my grand mother who came to Adelaide on a boat from Europe and they made their way to Fremantle.

My grandmother found work as a nurse (when I say work she got a bed and food only) my grandfather walked 700 miles into the middle of WA (read desert) to gold prospect. After two years he had built a small house and my grand mother joined him. He never found gold but built a cart to carry ore and acquired a bullock to pull it, thus made enough to live hauling ore to a battery. His son, my father worked for Afghan camel drivers loading wool bales until trucks arrived then he drove trucks. They all died quite young due to the harsh conditions they lived. Aged 12 I moved to the city and started an apprenticeship at 14 as a bootmaker. At 19 I met my wife and married at 23 and started my own family, I worked during the day and studied at night. For six years I worked full time and run my own business and did not have one day off for six years and worked a minimum of 12 hours a day.

I owe nothing to anybody and I got nothing from anyone, I'm an asset to Australia and I'm proud of that. My family all work hard and we all pay taxes which is in excess of $100,000 a year. I employ people and I work for the community and have very deep connections with the Aborigine community (Yamagee people) and they have accepted my family into country. I talk their language and know their customs and respect their traditions. I could just go to their sacred sites because legally I have a right but I don't because I respect their traditions.

So I put up with bigoted and ignorant posts here about me living in Australia, I don't have to justify anything to anyone. There are two types of people, those that make something of themselves and then you have the victims who always have someone to blame for their own failings. Muslims need to stop crying and whining about being picked on, get off your *** stop the whinging and prove that you are part of the community, constantly bellyaching only gives people more reason to dislike you. Muslims are the biggest whingers in the world full stop.

Not at all, I'm just saying that you can't say that about Australians without looking at your ancestry first. Everyone's hands are dirty in this regard.

A religion cannot be linked to ancestry. lol

It's family or ethnicity not your religious choice. How old are you?

What I meant was that your ancestors were forcefully converted to Islam (assuming you're Pakistani).
Funny how you act intellectually superior yet can't comprehend the simplest of things.

So that's one of your ancestors. What about the other 31 'great great great grandparents'? All worked in the same coalmine?
(Mother & father =2,
+ 4 Grandparents
+ 8 great grandparents
+ 16 great great grandparents
+ 32 great great great grandparents)

A rampant Islamophobe spending half his waking life ranting about Muslims on a predominantly Pakistani website. Oh the irony of it! :)))

Do you know something I dont? Please tell me my ancestors names and who forced them to convert? lol

Not if their religion is going to effect my business, other than that what their religion is makes no difference to me.

Yeah my other grand parents were the duke of queensbury and the royal family.

Would I employ a whinger, I do. Some of my employees have nothing better to do than whinge about everything, its too hot, its raining, I don't feel good. Just shut up and do your work get your pay and do your whinging elsewhere.

Interesting. You know more whingers than Muslims personally, yet you feel Muslims are still the biggest whingers. lol

Im just wondering how you come to such a generalisation? How many Muslims do you know personally? Or do you base this on something else?

Just like how you base your generalisations of Americans and Australians, I just follow your recipe.

But you made generalizations of Muslims before he did of Americans and Australians. :yk2 :shaq

You put up your opinion of white Australians and Americans in general and I'll apologise if required.

I mentioned both nationalities in relation to their nations history not individuals as you have done with Muslims. I accept your apology.

Bringing up the history of Australia is important but to belittle the average Australian based on something that they have zero control over (something that happened centuries ago) is a dumb argument.

Like all the beloved prophets didn't invade and kill, get over yourselves.

Prophets didnt wipe out entire races and export foreigners to occupy their lands.

The rule these people follow is that "its been a long time now so we should forget about it and not talk about it" while the same people would complain that muslims are coming to their lands and wearing their traditional dresses (burkhas) and its offensive to women and all that nonsense.

What he means is if one is of Pakistani descent which was once a part of India then history tells us that

"Islam first came to the western coast of India when Arab traders as early as the 7th century CE came to coastal Malabar[5] and Konkan-Gujarat.[6] Cheraman Juma Mosque in Kerala is thought to be the first mosque in India,"

"Islam arrived in North India in the 12th century via the Turkic invasions and has since become a part of India's religious and cultural heritage."

So the assumption is that the original muslims in India were either Hindus or probably even atheists"

There are some whites and muslims who show racial/religious chauvinism and are proud of the exploits of their ancestors, no matter what. There are also whites who display what is called the white guilt. But the term "muslim guilt" is yet to enter our lexicons. Is it to be believed that no war crimes or ethnic cleansing was done by the all conquering turkic/arab armies when they spread to europe/asia? I don't mind those who either tell sanitised tales of the past, or those who justify everything that was done by their co religionists, but I am still searching for those who show muslim guilt.

Orthodox Jews try to be faithful to Judaism. Some might find this conduct quite strange, perhaps even objectionable, but it is better for men to cover - or lower - their eyes than stare at or ogle women.

Some men have extremely filthy eyes, and that reveals what is in their disgusting hearts and minds. I do not want to be controversial, but many south Asian men - including Muslims - have very dirty eyes.

Yes, that is a possibility. South Asian mothers tend to treat their sons like semi-divine beings, so it is not surprising if men have a disdain for all women.

At the same time, there is no doubt that some South Asian women also have dirty eyes - 'Gandi Nazar' - they stare at and ogle men in a truly disgusting manner.

This is why it is important to 'lower the gaze' - which means behaving in a modest and humble manner, and not treating people, men or women, as material objects of desire.

All religions which crossed their natural boundaries are spread through conquests. A lot of blood was spilled over this.

It always starts with spilling blood and killing thousands. Once conquered, the foreigners will sing Carols, sufi songs and convert the rest by manipulating the scripts or by throwing money at them and giving them rewards.

This is how both Christianity and Islam spread all over the world.

Noticing attractive person of opposite sex is part of being human. You call it ogling or staring, it is part of human nature.

when women try to cover up more and more, men try to ogle even more.

In Western countries, men do not ogle at women the same way as the Asian men do. Repressive societies are the breeding grounds for perverts, oglers and rapists.

I don't believe dirty eyes are a racial trait. You could argue that the more restrictive culture of South Asia leads to certain behaviours. Maybe if it there was a more open sexual culture like we have in the west then it would be less of an issue.

Having grown up with white English friends I can tell you that men and women certainly do ogle the opposite sex. I would have thought the fashion industry would tell you that much. Ogling is very much facilitated though, so once it is on display everywhere you don't need to try especially hard to partake in it. Think of a beach in California or a holiday resort in Spain.

Noticing and staring/ogling are different. Some men shamelessly check on you from top to bottom like they have never seen a woman before. And when we notice this and look back at them, they just change on to other things like nothing happened. It's really creepy and uncomfortable to say the least. Even a burkha is not enough to prevent this.

You just have to step out to notice that.

Women can wear skirts at the malls, bikinis at the beach. Not one peep cares about them.

In India, even when my wife wears full on Churidar, men still ogle like she was wearing a bikini.

Yes.

In Western countries, men notice a female.

In our Subcontinent culture, men ogle at the female. No matter how much she covers up, she is not safe.

Had some really terrible experiences during my recent visit to India. Men did not stop staring at my wife and relatives even when I am right next to them. I tried getting close to the ogler and shouldered him and looked in his eyes. That did not deter them to the least bit.

I feel sorry for all Indian females who have to step out of their house everyday.

Rapists will always be there. But the amount of ogling and staring that women get in India is sever times more than in Western societies. They stare at women like they have never seen a female.

Lack of female companionship is a terrible thing for youngsters in India.

Lack of female companionship is a terrible thing for youngsters in India.

We should not focus on just one aspect..Is there a data that men ogle less in western countries? They may be better at making it subtle.. but the point is places like UK has a rape culture, despite having an open society.

Then Indian men need to make it subtle. The blatent disregard for the privacy of women is terrible in India.

As I have said, me being right next to my wife and relatives and even shouldering them and looking in their eyes also did not deter them. If this his how it is in every city, then ...

What about Subcontinent? Indonesia is not the whole world.

A combination of conquest and free will by the people. Conquest brings the religion to land lands but doesn't necessarily mean everyone is then forced to convert. You cannot force anyone to believe in anything they don't believe.

I don't want to blame the whole Indian men for this but you will see one such guy wherever you go. Better to dress modestly, take care of yourself and ignore the rest.
There is no point in fretting over things on which we have no control ever.
