I would pick Smith, but Williamson isn't too far behind.

After having seen all 3 of these guys, I have changed my stance.

Root is definitely the best Test batsman and will have the most decorated career out of the trio.

In terms of longevity, it will be Williamson.

Smith will be the Steve Waugh of this era (in terms of batting).

Williamson is the most complete batsman out of the current lot and my favorite. However, I think Smith has proved to be the biggest match winner in this era. So, I will have Smith on my team for now. Williamson can change it by winning something big for his team with his batting.

They all have similar test records, but Only one of those guys has lead his team to world cup win with his bat... should count for something.

Wouldn't exactly call a 10 run difference in average very similar personally for Kohli.

Smith. He's probably the best success story in my generation, went from an ridiculously mediocre cricketer to the world's best batsman.

Root has become way inconsistent, needs to perfect the art of scoring hundreds like Smith does.

Plus it's hard to remove Smith, Kohli and Kane once they're set.

All three are at pretty much at the same level, so this debate will move to and fro on series-by-series basis.

Root is more fluent than Smith and Williamson but they have better temperament.

He has had a bad summer.

Root has a very poor conversion rate. He has missed out on a lot of tons due to the same reason.

Williamson today, Root tomorrow. Smith not in the same league (all surface players)

btw by the above I mean that Root will be better after he has had more experience but currently, Williamson is better.

Still stand by Williamson, it's such a shame that he'll end up play far less Test matches than the other two.

I think the debate will linger a bit longer within the coming years. Smith has dipped down in form a bit and Williamson and Root didn't set alight the WCT20. Depending on which format I'd choose each player but if I had to choose someone right now, it'd be Root. He's too good. Lol at that guy who said Rahane is better than Root.

Root has the most potential in Limited Overs and Williamson in Tests. All 3 are great

My favourite out of the 3 is Smith. But I think Root is the best one out of 3 and will just edge ahead of both when all 3 are finished.

What if Root fails in entire series ?

That's the flow of wrist slitting.. it's an emotional response rather than rational one

Kohli > Smith > Root > QdK (may surpass Root soon if he continues to perform in Tests)

Kane is falling away and has proven to not be an all round batsmen like those 4.

Smith. I don't understand how Williamson is leading.

Smith is consistent everywhere. Williamson gets a bit bogged down although today's T20 knock was one of his better ones.

All formats:

Kohli
Root
Smith
QdK
Williamson
Won't be long before QdK takes Kane's spot in the Fab 4.

Kane simply isn't as talented or as mentally strong as those 4, they will be the batsmen of this era while Kane, Rahane, Azhar Pujara, Warner, Bravo, Rahul, Babar etc. will make up the second tier.

Kane's tour to SA and India have really exposed him, his mediocre captaincy hasn't helped his stature as a cricketer either.

Didn't see Crowe play, but considering how highly legends of the game speak of him, he's no chance of surpassing him.

I wouldn't be so harsh on him if people didn't overrate the hell out of him, he is flawed and nowhere near those 4 IMO.

There are close to a dozen batsmen in the world I would swap for Kane in a heartbeat - Kohli, Smith, QdK, Root, Rahane, Babar (has more potential and is a better AR cricketer), AB, Cook, Warner and Faf (excellent leader and better cricketer).

Kohli elevated his stature in tests while Williamson seems to have gone down in last half of 2016.

Williamson has also been accused of minnow bashing and to be fair his avg does drop heavily to 45-46 if you exclude the WI and other minnows and even more if you exclude the current SL team.

I would rate Williamson at perhaps Cook standards in tests( who himself is just a good test bat) and Amla level in odis.

As a batsmen across all formats, he is behind Kohli, Smith, Root, AB,Warner and Amla among active ones while Qdk has skill set to supress him sooner.

I'm glad people are starting to acknowledge it, I am tired of being told of how great he and his technique is. I don't care about any of it if it doesn't result in winning games. I think Amla is a bit too much, he's more like Fawad Alam in LOI's.

That average of 45-46 is only high because he cashed in on the roads in Australia, his numbers in SA, India and England are abysmal.
