John McDonnell has called for one million people to join a mass march in a bid to force a new election.

The shadow chancellor told trade union bosses that Labour needed every union to be mobilised and urged protesters to "get out on the streets".

A huge protest could be held through London on July 1 to put pressure on embattled Prime Minister Theresa May.

Mrs May has been under huge pressure since her snap election call ended in disaster, wiping out the Conservative majority and leaving them trying to get a deal with the DUP.

According to the Morning Star, Mr McDonnell told the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union conference that left-wing groups needed to mobilise.

He said: “We need people doing everything they can to ensure the election comes as early as possible.

“What we need now is the TUC mobilised, every union mobilised, get out on the streets.

“Just think if the TUC put out that call - that we want a million on the streets of London in two weeks' time.”

Protesters plan to meet outside BBC Broadcasting House from midday before marching to Parliament Square.

The news comes as a YouGov Survey on Thursday showed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s favourability ratings had surged to their highest ever level since the election.

Theresa May’s, by contrast, have plunged to around the depths Mr Corbyn had reached last November.

This is actually a Peoples Assembly protest but given the Grenfell tragedy also likely to double as a protest against the perceived failure of Austerity in this regard #JusticeForGrenfell

NOT ONE DAY MORE: #ToriesOUT - NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION
SATURDAY 1 JULY 2017
12PM, BBC BROADCASTING HOUSE, LONDON W1A 1AA
March to Parliament

Invite your friends on Facebook http://www.thepeoplesassembly.org.u...ly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=grenfell&n=2

On Saturday 1 July, we have called a national demonstration which is supported by Trade Unions and community organisations across the country. The Tories are in chaos, still trying to come up with a deal with the DUP so they can command a majority in parliament. Even if they can get a Queens Speech through Parliament, this arrangement cannot last long.

We're marching against a Government committed to austerity, cuts and privatisation. We're marching for a decent health service, education system, housing, jobs and living standards for all. We’ll hold a minutes silence for the victims of Grenfell Tower and a minutes applause for the emergency services who responded so bravely.

Of course at this time we must also send our deepest condolences and solidarity to our friends at the Finsbury Park Mosque. Colleagues there have played a central role to the People's Assembly. Now more than ever we need to show unity in such difficult times.

Well tomorrow's the 1st.

I assume Theresa and her government are shaking in their boots at the prospect of Labour magically forcing another election.

Corbyn is a great bloke and he'd probably be a breath of fresh air in government. I really don't like McDonnell though. Seems like a crooked old Leninist who would take power at any organic price.

Great day in London. Not 1 million but even the BBC commented on the 'impressive turnout'

I saw one estimate of 150,000!

I would put it at 20-30,000

I was at a jazz festival on the South Downs.

One Afro-jazz outfit did try political invective but it was quite generalised, more to do with how the species is at a turning point, and if one single human is hungry, the whole human family is at fault. No chants of Oh Jeremy Corbyn.

Maybe jazz festivals in the South Downs attract Liberal Centrist Remainers

Keep looking on the Labour website for upcoming events near me (with my postcode) but drawing a blank so far. Would like to be more involved. Is there a better way to keep track of what's going on around the country?

Dennis Skinner is too good
