"Just give your best and fight till the last ball" : PM Imran Khan's message to Pakistan Team

When I started my cricketing career I assumed success was 70% talent & 30% mind. By the time I finished playing cricket I felt it was 50-50 ratio. But now I tend to agree with my friend Gavaskar it's 60% mental strength & 40 % talent. Today role of mind will be more than 60% 1/5
— Imran Khan (@ImranKhanPTI) June 16, 2019

It's getting embarrassing now.

It's not the tournament final. It's just another match. Why even the PM is sending a series of tweets for this?

First was the embarrassment where the team went to the PM residence before the start of the cup, to get some blessings. That didn't turn out too well.

We should act professionally. Take it as a game. Not some sort a final.

Agreed, should’ve just sent a private message to Sarfraz.

Also, what is ”Raillu Kattas”? I didn’t get that.

Regardless, I'm glad he's addressing the issue of Railu Kattas in the team. I think the only Railu Katta we have is Imad Wasim, who's neither a bowler nor a batsman.

About time we get rid of these bits and pieces Railu kattas.

Bring in specialists - start from Haris.

What does raillu Kattas even mean? Am i missing something?

It’s all pointless words from Imran Khan.

These kind of things put more pressure on the players. You’re building up the occasion more and more on the players minds when big figures like Imran Khan start making statements like this.

I love the ‘rallu kattas’ part though:yk

I remember as a kid growing up in lahore, raillu katta used to play from both sides of the team. He used to be a filler when the teams were unbalanced. Like he would bat and field/bowl in the same innings.

I think the term here means more like not a specialist player, more of a filler.

Nothing embarrassing about the tweet and a great message from a great Leader.
The whole team should feel proud that we are blessed to have Imran Khan as our PM.
Who could be better person to offer such moral boosting words.

Hint if the pitch is dry bat 1st... Looks like we will be bowling then.
Husnain In.?

Okay.

But are we going to get rid of Railu kattas who have never won us any match?

Should have refrained from using the “Raillu Kattas” word out of respect for the players who have been selected to play for Pakistan in this World Cup.

The correct word is actually “Reylu Kattas”. It is a common term used in street cricket in Pakistan to refer to good for nothing players who are not very good at anything, basically bits and pieces players. They often play for both teams.

There are about 2-3 players in our squad who fit this description, and it is pathetic to see the PM of the country use a derogatory term for such players right before such an important match.

Ind vs Pak is a mind game.

You believe you can win, you’ll win.

It is all in the mind.

The team who will absorb the pressure, will win today.

That was probably the case in the 90’s, but not anymore. The skill gap between the two sides is huge.

For Pakistan to win, they not only have to play their best cricket but also hope that India is below its best, because if both teams are at their best, India will win.

Agreed, but going in there with a winning mentality increases your chances to win. Especially in a high pressure game like this.

He wants Malik dropped.
Think Malik will drop PML post retirement hehe

I agree India is a better side than Pakistan and if Pakistan want to win, they will have to play out of their skins.

But still a winning mentality helps a lot.

Absolutely. You can’t play your best cricket without a winning mentality.

Pakistani players are mental midgets. They can never play good cricket for a sustained period of time. This is the difference between minnow Pakistan and other teams.

We do have a young and fairly inexperienced team so i don’t understand why people expect them to be mentally tough.

That has been the case for the last two decades. Experienced or not, professional cricketers should have a high level of mental toughness.

Sure but we can all agree that he’s right. Malik and Imad have been useless so far.

Telling a cancer patient that he will die soon is also right. But you usually reserve that for when he asks: "How much time do I have?"

So Pakistan does the exact opposite of what Imran advised.

They ended up including TWO railu kattas:

Imad Wasim and Shaoib Malik.

:))) :))) :)))

:ua

IK should have avoided these tweets it's just a normal group match FGS and these things add more pressure on the player also this use of railu katta label here for a few player is is insulting coming from a PM for players who are select in a squad for WC representing Pakistan.

Really poor from IK expected better from him.

Some players perform better when they get a pep talk, not the case when it comes to Pakistanis so this might backfire.

So Pakistan' once again putting lots of pressure on its players which includes their coach. His press conference was horrible.

I agree they are TTFs but right now they are part of the WC squad and PM IK calling them railu katte is an insult.

This is gonna backfire big time and it added extra pressure on the players labeled "raelu katte"

Good stuff from Imran Khan. And lol at 'Raillu Kattas'. What does that mean? :inti

Raillu Katta: an allrounder who is neither very good with the bat nor very good with the ball. Someone who can just do a bit of both.

I think Imran was clearly trying to say don't play Malik, play Haris!

I have never been in favor of these messages which create unnecessary hype and pressure. At most a simple best of luck should suffice.

He's always been like this when it comes to cricket. He should avoid this but he will never listen to any advice when it is related to cricket. Khudi aqal aye to aye.

I am just confused. Why did the PM of Pakistan comment on group game ? If it was WC final, I can still understand.

By the way, they seem to have done everything opposite to his suggestions.

No it's not he is a PM now and should avoid this because he is not some ex cricketer turned opposition leader anymore.

I respect your opinion, but disagree.

He has every right to comment on it as an ex-cricketer. It's infuriating to see these railu kattas in the team, and we're going to lose because of them again.

By the way, they seem to have done everything opposite to his suggestions.

Yes sir. There's a reason we've been on a constant losing streak - railu kattas like Malik and Imad Wasim have played key roles in us losing.

I think they could have still gotten away with that decision. But why not bat first ? This was no brainer. I understand the rationale of weather but quite frankly this team will not chase 200 in 25 overs any more easily.

Imran started this losing streak. He is the first captain who lost against India and he lost against the weakest side to ever beat us in World cups. I think Imran should keep his mouth shut and focus on his job at hand. Idiotic statement from the prime minister.

This is extremely embarrassing. Someone, please tell IK that he got more significant issues at hand to handle this is just a cricket match his country is on the verge of bankruptcy with several other internal and external matters and he got an incompetent government ruining it further.

I panicked when Sarfaraz win the toss but then he chose to field and I was happy. I expected our openers to be safe against Amir, see off the new ball and then capitalize. India doing well so far.
Pakistan’s best chance is to bat first, put runs on board and then let Amir n co. go guns blazing.
After Inzi sir retirement I have never seen Pakistan batsman comfortable chasing. Do you think Pak can chase 320 today?. If I was Sarfaraz I would always bat first regardless of pitch and conditions.

I don't see how. Pakistan has only really made a name for itself as a cricket team, what else has it achieved since it's inception? No surprise leaders have throughout it's history fallen back on cricket as their main focus of identity.

The real embarrassment here is the cricket team itself. It should be disbanded and retired, and let's see what is left. Not a lot I suspect.

He was right to suggest we should bat first. And LOL at people saying he shouldn't be commenting about this as it's just a group game. He is one of the most powerful people in Pakistan, a former international cricketer and he shouldn't be allowed to comment yet regular fans who have regular lives can say what they want? RIP logic

It is minnow talk.

He's just being realistic about the huge gap between these two sides.

He knows that if India are at their best Pakistan won't be able to win, but should at least give their best.

Pakistan made a name in a lot of things in the past when our cricket team was booming hockey was also doing great Pakistan was also considered a growing and developing nation. Relying on cricket means that they got nothing better to do maybe he find himself still as just a cricket captain who won the world cup of 1992 when not he is the prime minister of Pakistan which needs massive attention and competency to stand up as a nation.

If we thought that going down in every field will not effect cricket team too, we were utterly wrong.

I don't really believe in playing all specialists. If you do that, your tail would start at no.7 and we don't really have much better specialists either. Criticism of Imad without having played is unfair. He bowled well today and is a proper defensive bowler. Just because he can bat as well doesn't mean he is bits and pieces.
But this is a morale boosting tweet. Nothing wrong with that.
It must be painful for IK though with during his time, Pak used to be the favorites for the majority of time and now it's totally the opposite. The tides have turned totally since 2011. But it started with Dhoni becoming the captain and Pak cricket falling to lower heights during the tumultuous 2007-10 period.
Now the gulf between the quality of the two sides is huge.

Cricket is the major sport in Pakistan, this is the world cup. Not that unusual for a leader to offer some words of advice to the cricket team, especially as IK was a former world cup winner.

It is in huge interest of Pakistan if we normalize the realation with India rather than PM sending a 5 post tweet before the match that being said he is the PM now and he is found missing on bigger issues his tweets on cricket games just show that he is trying to cash in some easy good name. He also need to forget cricket and do something about Pakistan the country is under huge problems at the moment.

I know it is not abnormal for a PM to say few good words before major tournament in any sports or country but this deep tweet is embarrising since it is just a game and situation is fairly bad in Pakistan.

I feel IK has done fair bit to try to normalise relations with India, not sure that is even a valid criticism, in any case this is a sporting message, not really meant to be a political discussion, so I will leave that sort of debate to one of the many threads on TP.

These “players” are dragging the great Khans name in the mud, he shouldn’t allow them back in the country!!

I think it is more about taste and reading the situation, in my opinion, a sensible political leader would not have bothered tweeting before this game let alone making a whole speech.

I think those who are making a big issue of it are probably politically opposed to IK regardless of whether the message was appropriate.

I don't like his politics neither I like politics of any other politicians in Pakistan. I had a bit of hope when he was elected, but after him, in my opinion, if people are not corrupt, they sure are incompetent.

I am judging him here based on what in my opinion should be the way and what I have seen from more sensible and better leaders around the world.

PM Imran Khan advised Pakistan to bat first against India

And they did not listen to him as the team management thought we are brave enough to ignore Prime Ministers advise.

Pathetic statements by the pm.

Funny how he has the luxury to critisize but if any liberal journalist does the same than they are curtailed.

The captain makes the decision based upon the conditions. You dont make decisions by saying oh im gonna bat 2nd today randomly.

In 2015 world we batted second to india and still lost

Ok I see slot of negative comments about Imran Khan, question I would like to ask is, was he wrong about Safraz Decision? Clearly we should of batted first and everyone saw what happens when we included specialist in the team ( Harris)
