Local U-19 cricketer commits suicide in Karachi

A young cricketer who had been a part of Karachi's under-19 team allegedly hanged himself on Monday at his residence in Model Colony.

Mohammad Zaryab, a student of grade 11, was reported by his family to have killed himself after losing his position in the national side because he had exceeded the age limit.

His father, Aamer Hanif — himself a cricketer who played for the national side in five ODIs — told DawnNews that the deceased had been upset over his exclusion from the team and had been under extreme pressure from his coaches.

The aggrieved father urged cricket coaches to rethink their priorities and not exert undue pressure on young players.

Secretary Zone four Karachi Shamim Anwer, however, rejected the allegations that Zaryab was dropped from the team and was under pressure because of it.

While speaking to DawnNews, Anwer said that there had been an issue in just one match regarding the age of certain players of the zone's under-19 team, including Zaryab, because of a medical test report.

He said that the test was later revoked and all players, including Zaryab, were granted clearance certificates. "Zaryab continued to play [for the team] thereafter," Anwer said, adding that he was one of the best players of the team.

He said that Zaryab had not played the last few matches but that was because the player had himself chosen not to play owing to food poisoning. "Why would we drop a player who is helping us win?" Anwer asked.

Police said that the family has not yet approached them for the filing of a case.

The cause of death will be ascertained following a post-mortem examination.

The deceased's body has been shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College (JPMC).

This is just sad and gross injustice from him towards his parents. He committed suicide for not being picked for the Under 19 side? This is ridiculous. He had years after years to establish himself as a player in the game he so deeply loved. Guys above the age of 35 keep trying till the last point to make a comeback to the national team.

ina lilahi wa ina ilayhi rajioon

Always sad to hear these kind of things :(
Didn't he score 70 odd against outh Africa in the u19 WC?

Sad news.
Teenagers are immature mentally and very emotional plus pressure and expectations from family and coaches may be the reason.
Anyways not a way to quit but you have to fight and see that 45 years old Misbah is still playing.

This is real sad to hear. Its a first of its kind I heard at least in Pakistan cricket. Dont really know what to say on this.

Only he knew what went inside his head when he did it, very sad :(

Extremely sad - thoughts and prayers to his friends and families.

Very sad indeed. A lesson needs to be learned here, as the father said don't put undue pressure on youngsters. Coaches need to learn how to deal with different people at times. May Allah grant him Jannah and give his family sabr through this tough time.

Really sad to hear. Condolences to his family.

It's a sad reality that young aspiring cricketers have to deal with a lot of pressure. In Pakistan it is very difficult to pursue a career in sports while also getting a quality education. These lads usually have to make a decision whether they are going to devote everything to cricket or work hard for a good education and get a job. The kid might have been dealing with many other things as well, only God knows the full story. I have at least he is in peace now.

Not even 19. Could have chosen another career if Cricket is not working out.

RIP Youngster.

Very unfortunate, at this tender age every small set-back seems like the end of the world. It is upto the mentors and people around teenagers to downplay these set-backs and let the kid know that a year or so down the line it wouldn't even matter.

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi raji'oon

The rejection must have been heartbreaking for the poor kid. There is no support system in place to help kids deal with rejection or even injuries at that age. Kids work so hard on their craft probably ignoring everything else in life. Once the door is closed, he probably did not see any alternatives. Everybody is to blame here- the board, the family and the entire support system that doesn't know how to help someone in depression.

Tragic. RIP.

I wish someone had been there to explain to him there's always a chance to come back from bad times.

Heart breaking news may Allah SWT give patience to his family
