KARACHI: We will make Karachi the cleanest city in Asia, vowed Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan convener Farooq Sattar. He said that the party has pledged to turn certain union councils (UCs) in the city into model UCs.

He said that for that purpose they have selected a few UCs in Korangi and Malir and Landhi districts and another in Shah Faisal. He was speaking to the media during the inauguration of a project to pave 100 streets with concrete blocks in 100 days in UC-6 in District Korangi. This project is part of the mayor’s 100-day cleanliness campaign.

He stressed that in one UC, a hundred streets will be paved with concrete blocks and sanitation and cleanliness in the UC will also be improved. Sattar also claimed that in every model UC, a school and dispensary will also be constructed.

“We have decided that we won’t look back from here and without any resources and powers we will turn Karachi’s UCs into model UCs, one by one,” he added.

The strength of Karachi is the unity of its people, he said. “We are taking such steps so that the development of Karachi remains long-lasting,” he added.

Sattar said that they have devised a plan where the infrastructure and sewerage system will remain intact for many years to come at a minimum cost. He said trackers must be installed in garbage disposal vehicles to ensure they go to Jam Chakro to empty the trash or else they might throw the garbage in other districts.

The MQM-Pakistan leader requested the chief minister and local government minister to hand over pumping stations so that they can ensure the equal distribution of water to residents.

They may me make angry everytime they talk. All they do is talk! I might go on vacation to Pakistan in a year or so, I'll see how much it's change since my last visit.

Karachi is the dirtiest place I've seen in my life, big talk from this dude, posters seem to suggest he's corrupt like 99% of other Pakistani politicians.

Farooq Bhaee return us our Karachi of 1970's we will clean it ourself.

Keeping desi cities clean is not only a function of the government holding a mop, but the people learning to quit littering as well.

Desi cities can never be clean

Only Islamabad is clean and even there if you go to areas which are densely populated with residents and commercial ventures, the areas resemble Lahore now

Not sure why these dreams are just trashed by people. It is great to have such aim because without that nothing can be achieved. Same is the case with swacch bharat scheme, people run it down without understanding it is actually the people's duty to keep it clean.

If not our generation, atleast give opportunity for next generation to take it further.

Karachi police begin arresting people for throwing garbage in the open

A few days after the Sindh government imposed a ban on dumping of household, industrial and hospital waste in the open, the Karachi police have started taking action against citizens for throwing garbage and registering cases against them.

Police arrested two suspects who allegedly threw garbage on a main road in Karachi's old city area, said Nabi Bux SHO Adil Khan.

The officer said two persons namely Abdul Qadir and Irfan were arrested and a first information report (FIR) was registered against them under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The case was registered on behalf of the state.

The arrested men were presented before a local court which released them on bail, said the SHO.

Khan said the action was taken after the provincial government recently imposed a ban on dumping of trash outside the home instead of at designated places and burning of garbage, which causes environmental pollution and health hazards.

Similar action against throwing garbage outside homes was also taken in Garden, Saudabad and Khawaja Ajmer Nagri areas.

The Sindh home department on recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed water commission had banned dumping of household, industrial, commercial and hospital waste in open spaces of residential and commercial areas.

The ban has been imposed in light of environmental and health hazards caused by the open disposal of waste.

The home department had authorised the SHO of concerned police stations to take action against the violators of the ban.

The Sindh government has been struggling to contain Karachi's garbage emergency for years. In neighbourhoods across the city mounds of garbage can be observed piling up everywhere.

There is no reliable data about the amount of solid waste the metropolis generates on a daily basis, though estimates suggest it runs into thousands of tonnes.

Much of the waste ends up in dumps, alleyways and open spaces where it remains for weeks if not longer, while some of it is burnt in bonfires that unleash a vile miasma that chokes the entire locality.

Too little; too late. From videos and pictures; karachi unfortunately looks like a dump:/ How can people dump their own city; i dont drop litter here and everyone plays their part to keep the city clean. People even pick up their dog poop and I see videos on Snapchat of grown men peeing in the open in Karachi #JunaidAkramSnapchat. This is so bad; thing is that they think that this is normal and they don't even wash their hands later. Health, hygiene and social responsibility should be taught at schools from a very young age. Pakistan should implement aspects of the Japanese schooling system where children are taught on how to behave properly in a society. The local government should also provide suitable facilities so the population can dump their rubbish or recycle it. Ofcourse; the people and govt need to have the right intentions and work togather. Pakistanis make out themselves to be islamic; isnt hygiene the basics of Islam?!?

but but ignore this and lets focus on other things like Imrans marriage or Altaf bhais speech..or why NS was disqualified. etc etc..

Pakistani's have been destroyed as a nation. The education system has been gutted to such an extent that students cannot develop any form of independant critical thinking. As a result the right questions are simply not asked. People need health education and basic amenities. If they get that they can deliver a better society...otherwise welcome to the dump..

I too wonder the same.Pakistan education system is a total failure. They teach nothing about personal hygiene, ethics and manners.Majority of Pakistanis do not even brush their teeth or wash their hands before eating. They have no idea what is a balanced diet and the importance of exercise.

Similar to Japan, Hong Kong’s education system begins teaching students about health, manners, hygiene, road manners and ethics from kindergarten thus producing well-mannered, informed and productive members of society. This needs to be done in Pakistan too.
