3rd cricketer after Sobers and Simpson to convert his maiden century into a triple. Well done!

I really wanted Nair to beat Lara,Screw declaring

India have the series, demoralise England and utterly destroy them

No offense to him, good batsman but he is not beating this score could end up like Lala Amarnath, hope he proves me wrong.

Has everything to be a top class batsmen for India . Best player for spin in India , plays pace and bounce very well . He doesnt have to beat this score .

Wow...Karnataka batting products Karun,Rahul,Pandey are making their names...Better than that Bombay Product Rohit Sharma who has no temparament of tests

IIRC he plays from Karnataka but is from Rajasthan, someone correct me if i'm wrong.

What I like about him is the calmness that he exudes. No real celebrations even after big milestones.

It was a great knock regardless of condition.

Just a 3rd test and got a triple at a SR@80.

I am not sure if I am happy for Nair scoring 300 and cementing his place or the fact that at least for near future he's put Rohit out of contention :) 5 more tests at home, hopefully he does enough to cement his place as no.6

I think one thing is common 90% Indian posters want Rohit out of Indian test team :yk

India's batting strength:-

Openers:

Vijay
Rahul
Dhawan

Middle Order:-

Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Nair
Rohit
Manish

Wkt-Keeper

Parthiv
Saha

Karun luckily survived a boat accident in Kerala. People rescued him as he don't know swimming.

Gun performance.

I am not sure about his game against pacers but his pacing, awareness and the way he played this knock has been nothing but outstanding.

Pretty sure the rest 10% are paid fan-boys. :yk

Jokes aside this is what you do with opportunities you get, you make it big when the team NEEDS it, not against some random hapless team that doesn't even want to be here.

Also much like his ODI career India can't afford to just keep playing him till he gets it right in tests, this performance should make Nair first choice for the rest of the home season even if Rohit gets fit. I'd be shocked see Rohit just walk back into the team if he passes the fitness test.

I didn't see his innings, what makes you feel not so sure about his game against pacers?

Last test series he played , he was the most consistent performer for India

Hi Rohit, hope your recovery is on track.

Jk

Anyway yes stats make it seem and his contributions were key but with so many opportunities and exposure away to world class attacks, he's yet to get that consistency India needs in home condition. The fact that we're in a winnable position despite England batting well in this series is because they scored big and not just fancy 60s-70s

I had given up on Nair after his first two outings. How he has redeemed himself. Well done, young man!

In the near future India is going to have one powerhouse of a batting lineup in all formats.

I didn't see his innings, what makes you feel not so sure about his game against pacers?

He was a bit jittery when the ball did stuff. Not every ball but noticeably.

Got dropped on 30 odd off a pacer...then again dropped after he got a century off a pacer.

Almost got lbw when Keaton (pacer) got one to jag back.

But people who have seen him more closely have mentioned that he doesn't have any weakness against pace and bounce per se but may struggle a bit against swing.

Classic Bangalore school of batting product, no OTT celebrations, superb both on the backfoot and frontfoot, compact and more importantly the ability to sweat it out in the middle for long long time!! GRV, RD and now Karun Nair!! You go boy!

Sad thing is most of the fans were busy whinning regarding declaration and forgot to enjoy his inning. :inti Scoring 300 in his 3rd test is not a joke at all.

I know that bros,Raina community is from Kashmir but Suresh Raina grew up in UP and that's where he learn't to play.

Isn't it funny when people, even after seeing someone post for so long, are presumptuous about u and not willing to give u the benefit of doubt for something as basic as Nair surname? For the record I knew what I meant, but unfortunately i don't know.

ill be honest and say didnt watch a single ball or even know of the guy's existence but just came across it on cricinfo.

Congrats to the lad!

This is some achievement

Is he the 2nd Indian to get one?

Karun also became the first Malayalee to score a Test century.

Though he is settled in Bengaluru and plays Ranji Trophy for Karnataka, Nair, whose parents hail from Chenganoor in Alapuzha district in Kerala, regularly visits his home town.

Leading Kerala Ranji cricketer Sachin Baby told the media that he is really excited to hear the news that Nair has become the first Malayalee to score a century.

Yes. 2ND only after Sehwag.

Everyone thought sanju samson will be the next big thing from kerala cricket n now these lad making the headlines in international cricket..Time

Rahul must be biting his bat for what he did to himself (Chance of breaking Lara's record on that pitch?)
Having said that it requires some tough temperament and bit of luck to score such big runs, kudos to Nair!

Why are these references to Community, regions? He is an Indian, accept that and appreciate. If regions are taken into consideration it can't be denied that he has played all form of first class cricket in Karnataka.

Many Malyalis on the Facebook and other networking sides are already celebrating this as the achievement of " One of their Own "

Region and background matters, especially when it's a first unique achievement from a certain part. Sreesanth also enjoyed massive popularity among his home state fans.

Sometimes Cricketers not only represent India but even their State / Town on the National Circuit. Earlier Sreesanth was the token representative of his state/ Cricket Association in the National team.

We malayalees are the discarded people when cricket/films are concerned. People from north , when they consider south India , they only reach as far as Tamil Nadu.So we celebrate our every achievement.

Very good innings of course but certainly not a chanceless one.

Dropped on 34 and 217 on chances which should have been taken, nicked but escaped since England were out of reviews and should have been out to Jennings' first ball.

Lineup for the next test should be - Rahul, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane.

On the flip side, what was really super impressive was the effortless ease with which he accelerated once he went past 100. A bit Brian Lara-esque if you may.

Rahane struggles in asian conditions

I am a sort of a Northerner and I can assure you that I am very well aware of the beauty of "God's Own Country" and its high literacy rate.

Rahane can be pushed to opening spot (or dropped at home as Nair is superior against spin!) because both our openers are injury prone and Murali Vijay is aging as well! And in overseas (against stronger opponents) anyhow we are going to play extra batsman I guess Nair gets a chance (Unless Jayant cements his place as a batting-alrounder) Not too much of an headache for management if they are wise enough to play the chess-game with selection (and its not bad to have good options at hand!)

Well done here, but declaration was too late. 180-200 runs was enough to declare.

It is not because Kerala/Malayalam is sidelined as such. It is because they just didn't produce enough quality cricketers (shows in their Ranji achievements). Sreeshanth became popular for both his talent and ill-doings. Malayalam films and actors are quite popular in their own ways (non-commercial, but critically acclaimed across India) I don't think any region in India is sidelined as such, in that way most of the non-Hindi languages of North India including Bengali are least known to South Indians! (Everything from North India is assumed as Hindi or Urdu!)

It is good to see Indian batting talent doing well and more importantly their ranji performances bieng rewarded.
Similar to Rahul, there are two young talents scoring tons in Ranji.
Hopefully they will be in team soon : Shreyas Iyer and Risabh Pant.
Both are talents equal to Karun Nair and Rahul.

A batting lineup of

Rahul
Vijay
Pujara/ Karun Nair/ Shreyas / Risabh
Kohli
Rahane / Karun Nair/ Shreyas / Risabh

( not to mention Rohit sharma as waterboy ;) )

and to add to it
Ashwin ver 2.0 as batsman
Jadeja and Jayant Yadav decent contributors

Indian batting looks strong for next few years

That is good to know . But I am afraid you are more of an exception.

Yes, In case India was 0-1 behind or 1-1 or even 2-0 up! But 3-0 is fair enough and why waste the efforts on a dead pitch? If its going to give result to us, it will give in good enough time like in Eden-Laxman-Dravid case :) We won previous tests with good amount of time left. Lets hope it happens tomorrow also, all it needs is 1 good tight spell by spinners. Mishra should come to the party, lets hope!

Pant is a Rahul-level talent.

If he can keep well to Ashwin and Jadeja, he will be a mainstay of this team for a decade.

I like to see every team trying to win every match unless they are in danger of losing it. India had no chance of loss after 180 runs lead and it would increased the chance of win. Series score line is irrelevant.

Great stuff from Karun. I knew he had a good Ranji Trophy record, but the way he took up the chance to move from 200 to 303* is just unbelievable. Even if he ends up a Spin track only player , he would be an asset for the team.

PS: Unfortunately, I think the moment Rohit hits some good white-ball form , he'd be preferred over Karun for his "Aggressive batting ".

The flattest track one can possibly get..

Rohit is the most Talented Indian Batsman of the last 70 years, plus he's from a City that is way too superior in terms of producing Batsmen and thus, once he is fit he will get automatic preference over the likes of Rahul, Parthiv, Nair or anyone would be made to warm bench to accommodate Rohit.

Rohit deserves a permanent spot in the side on basis of his talent alone.

First triple centurion on a flat track. Rest were green mambas

Use your head rather than emotion for once

All I am saying is these knocks from both Rahul and Karun don't prove anything

Why are these references to Community, regions? He is an Indian, accept that and appreciate.

Honestly dude, I don't think its about regionalism and one-upmanship..

Kerala is traditionally a football crazy state (we used to look down upon Cricket till 10-15 years back !!). But since then Sreesanth made the team and Sanju got an IPL deal. The last 5-10 years has seen a HUGE increase in the interest in Cricket.
People from our state are believing that our guys can ACTUALLY MAKE THE TEAM. While earlier the South Indian players were strictly from the 3 Big South cities only ( Chennai, Bangalore & Hyderabad ) and all we got to do was watch it on TV. Yes, our cricketing infrastructure was never at that level but at the same time there was no necessary motivation for the young players as well to keep pushing .

So playing up the achievement of a Karun Nair is VITAL because more and more kids here actually seeing Cricket as a viable Sports career .! At-least the IPL if not Domestic cricket. It'll help grow the game here. Just like what MSD did for cricket in Jharkhand .

Nobody is raving about the technical perfection of the innings. Its just the long innings temperament and pacing. And that too early in their careers. An appreciation for those youngsters and their supportive family . We normal ones are looking into that only rather than you technicians.

First kerala player to represent India was Tinu Yohannan who got badly whipped by Gayle in one of the matches. Maybe it was also his last.

Then came Sreesanth with his drama antics and fake aggression and fizzled into fixing.

Then, fans were looking forward to Sanju Samson as ideal replacement after Dhonis retirement. Sanju even showed great promise at the start but didn't fulfill his potential and has seemed to be lost from the selection radar.

Now, it's Nairs turn to impress.

I don't know which coach it was, but somebody who keeps a eye on domestic circuit made a comment that Kerala has best fast bowling talent coming up in India. And named maybe Sandeep warrier and others?

it proves that they can build a innings , which alone makes you a very good test batsmen . For now thats good enough .

Karnataka player .

Malayali settled in Karnataka just like me. :) But seriously who gives a damn where he is from. The guy scored a triple hundred against England so early in his career! That's what really matters. And also we have found a solid no.6 . He couldve sprouted right out of the Indian Ocean for all I care !

Indian fans after realizing Rohit's test career is almost dead

Stop this nonsense talk now, everyone has their own right to be proud of their identity. No one should tell them what they should be proud of and what they should be not. When someone makes India proud he is an Indian, but when someone embarrasses you, then he becomes a "UP" "Bihari" and etc. We all know how typical Indian male behave. Let people be proud of who they are. We don't this JAI HIND talk now.

Dude Ram Lakhan is a Karnataka fellow.

Nair is a Keralite who came up in Karnataka system.

Bachchan wrote on Twitter: "KARUN NAIR 303* vs England. This no 'white wash' you 'distempered' them. DISTEMPERED : emotionally or psychologically disturbed !!."

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar also congratulated Nair. "Aaj hamari Bhartiya team ke khiladi Karun Nair ne 303 run kiye. Main unka Abhinandan karti hun aur puri team ko badhai deti hun (Today our Indian team player Karun Nair scored 303. I congratulate him and the team).

That was Vijay, knicked but no reviews. And why should Karun have been out to Jennings's first ball when it was too high?

This had me in splits :)))

Kerala is a small state so obviously less chances for people to get selected for national team there is no discrimination towards any state/ ethnicity. People using his community name in this thread is just

For us South = Tamil because it's a strong influential community amongst rest south states, similarly north = Hindi for majority south Indians.

Kerala is not a small state by population. and nor is it any backward state like Jharkhand.
It is the most developed state of India. The issue is that malayalis don't bother about playing cricket.

Well technically it was Abey Kuruvilla who lived not very far from where i do in Mumbai. Lol. Keralites love their football too much.
