ISLAMABAD: Korean Ambassador Kwak Sung-Kyu said Pakistan has great potential for Buddhist religious tourism.

“The current government is working towards the safety of religious sites as well as promotion of tourism,” he said, adding that Pakistan was home to the largest number of Buddhist sites and that promotion of religious tourism can greatly stabilise the economy of Pakistan.

Talking to Daily Express, he termed Pakistan as a friendly nation for Korea and said that the ancient cultural and religious artifacts in Pakistan were very unique. He said that Pakistan was home to the most ancient heritage of Buddhism. We request the Pakistani government to take special care of our religious sites and preserve them for our future generations. As per its contract with the Pakistani government, he said, Korea will provide modern equipment for the discovery of precious artifacts and cultural sites in Pakistan.

While addressing a ceremony held in Islamabad museum later on Friday, he said that Korea will ensure all possible support for Pakistan. “We will provide international standard machinery and equipment to Pakistan to help it excavate historic sites and artifacts,” he added. On the other hand, National History and Literacy Division Federal Secretary Amir Hasan said that the Pakistani government will take effective measures at every level. We are thankful to the Korean government for assuring their support, he said, adding that the machinery will help Pakistan unearth undiscovered cultural sites in the country.

Tourism promotion

Pakistan and South Korea have warm cultural relations which are deep routed in history.

The common heritage of Buddhism is of particular importance for cementing cultural and religious ties between the two countries.

The Republic of Korea and its embassy in Pakistan are committed to increasing relations with Pakistan for preservation of cultural heritage and to promote tourism in Pakistan.

As part of cooperative efforts, the Korean government has provided conservation equipment for treating and preserving Pakistan’s movable heritage, especially specimens of Buddhist art, which has been uncovered from the archaeological remains of Buddhist sanctuaries in the ancient Gandhara region to Department of Archaeology and Museums (DoAM).

The equipment included environmental control system for museums, devices for cleaning and conservation of antiquities including conservation consumables, stereo-microscope, ultrasonic cleaner etc. at the amount of US$50,000.

The equipment will surely be instrumental in promoting the country’s capacity to conserve its cultural heritage to the international level.

The project has been administrated jointly by the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) of the Republic of Korea, Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (KCHF) and DoAM, Pakistan with a common aim.

The Korean Ambassador and National History and Literacy Division secretary, DoAM director general and other officials from both sides participated in the handing-over ceremony that took place at the Islamabad Museum on Friday.

He also announced that there would be new upcoming initiatives similar to this. Among them, he is emphatically working to arrange a pilot Korean Buddhists pilgrim tour to the sacred Buddhist sites in Gandhara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by March or April this year.

This will be followed by a couple of projects such as; one more project for capacity-building of treating historical artifacts, and a programme to invite archaeological officials and academia, preferably from museums having collections of Buddhists artwork to Korea soon.

I hope Buddhist pilgrims from our Ladakh region are also allowed to visit these places.

Fun fact: Buddhist sites in Northern region of Pakistan have signs in Urdu, English and Korean because they get Korean tourists.

Yes we should celebrate Sikhism and Buddhism as being Pakistani religions. For too long have the Indians been hijacking Pakistani culture, it's time to set the record straight.

This is an asinine post without forethought. How do you plan to stake claim to Buddhism being Pakistani when Buddha was born in Lumbini (India-Nepal border)?

I presume your blind hatred for all things India/Indian is making you blurt out all kinds of antagonistic statements?

Sikhism and Buddhism are Pakistani religions. Where is the hatred in that?. You have no sense or logic. Go and see an optician.

I think you should see a psychologist before I see an optician and do something about your hate mongering.

As I said in my other post which you conveniently ignored - This is an asinine post without forethought. How do you plan to stake claim to Buddhism being Pakistani when Buddha was born in Lumbini (India-Nepal border)?

Perhaps they should upgrade the education standards in your local schools?

Once again where is the hatred in my previous post? See you need to see an optician nether am I following your posts around here Jack! Coz today the country where Nanak was born is Pakistan! The Buddhist sites are also in Pakistan as well so we have a rightful claim to these two religions. There was Saudi Arabia during the time of Rasoolullah(saw) however we have to accept these places are now in Saudi. You are just jealous of us being home to two great religions.

I meant that there was no Saudi Arabia during the time of Rasoolullah(saw). Today to see the holy sites Muslim people need a visa to visit Saudi to see Mecca and Medina. Similarly, there was no Pakistan during the period of Nanak or Buddha but today we are the rightful guardians. Hard luck!

Man, do you actually think before you type or just spout off whatever rhetoric gets into you? You counter your own logic and that is simply because you seem more driven by what to say in order to counter things about India instead of thinking logically.

If Guru Nanak being born in Pakistan = Pakistan claiming to be home of Sikhism
then, Buddha being born in Lumbini = Nepal/India claiming to be home of Buddhism, right?

Please just take a moment, breathe in+out and think about this without anger or your desire to say things for the sake of arguing. For context, I have many Pakistani American friends here and I'm a neutral American. I have no jealousy going on against your nation, matter of fact I only have pity for the common people suffering in your part of the world. Do trust me when I say this - nobody is jealous of Pakistan being the home of theocratic ideas (mostly Islamic in current times) this day and age. For you to make that claim is painting an unfair bad picture on your fellow Pakistanis.

I am too much an intellectual for you and don't expect you to understand my deep wisdom. Yes we are not stopping anyone else from claiming Buddha as their own but there are many versions of Buddhism in case it missed you. Zen Buddhism is more Pakistan associated in the sense that it's a bit different to other Buddhist philosophies, there is not one Buddhism.

I am perfectly calm that you should be able to see in my writing nonetheless thanks for worrying about my health. I think you are an Indian American to be honest so why not just admit it? What bad picture am I painting when as I Muslim claiming Buddhism and Sikhism as being part of our ancient culture? If anything this should tell you that I am proud of Pakistan's pre-Islamic past as well. Unless you have visited Pakistan you are in no position to pass judgement. Doing so makes you look like an idiot.

Good, let's get all that name calling out to destress. People generally resort to name calling when they cannot respond with logic. Nobody is questioning you if you want Pakistan to be tolerant of other faiths. There are many versions of all faiths - your own faith included, and there are many versions of no faiths as well.

Since we are talking backgrounds - I assume you are a British Pakistani? Or are you a Pakistani living in Pakistan? I'm sharing this for context to hopefully lower your hatred of me - I'm of multiple mixed ethnicities, some of it Indian. My parents themselves are not completely South Asian. I'm a veteran and have served overseas in one of the many muslim lands. So my loyalty is absolutely for my land (USA) and nothing else - so I'm not some version of Indian looking to get you (enough with that inferiority complexed paranoia already!).

Since you claim to be "too much of an intellectual" (is this even proper phrasing?) with possibly Einstein level thought processes - perhaps you should not conflict your own logic? Once again your posts are making your own community people look in a bad light ... just sayin'

Bud - I care a hoot about your health, you can get cancer and die tomorrow for all I care. Your posts are not calm or reasonable but full of one sided opinions and hatred. I do care when few rotten apples are ruining the image of an otherwise wonderful bag. This is true for all brands of apples, not just your own - so I'm consistent in my judgements.

Where is the name calling you are on about?? Yes of course there are many groups in every faith. I believe a particular brand of Buddhism is Pakistani. Please don't flatter yourself thinking I hate you when I don't even know you!!:maqsood Being even partly Indian means you will naturally have an affinity for that country like I do for Pak. You seem to have blind faith in your Amerika who I am not a bit envious off as you seem to think judging from your tone.

Rather you accused me of hate mails but have been unable to prove it at all so I am still waiting. My posts are supporting Pakistani non Muslim heritage where as I am still to understand what point you are trying to make, come again!. " Bud - I care a hoot about your health, you can get cancer and die tomorrow for all I care" shows the absolutely classless person you are yet you accuse other people of hatred! Remember karma and all that or what you wish upon others will visit you! Your mails are full of hypocrisy and sheer garbage making no sense whatsoever. It is you with your insensitive ramblings which are exposing your sorry personality. Then again that should not be surprising considering you are an American veteran whatever that means. As long as I get my message across is all that matters.

It is not classless at all. You are hate monger who seems to continuously attack the background (religion/nation) of a person in each of your messages. Add to that you are a total stranger (as am I to you) so as total strangers we carry no affinity towards each others and ain't nothing classless about that. You don't care what happens to me and vice versa, and I only called a spade a spade. I did not wish anything upon you, I only said I have no preference or affinity for any eventuality that may occur as an unbiased stranger as would you in response to a comment you had made earlier.

You talk ill of my country and that America is evil while conveniently forgetting all the evils your own country has done. I'm trying to be generous and offer you a neutral ground stating that all countries have some evil but yet you do not want to relent. Perhaps attacking the other person's background and not their message/logic is the only way you can debate?

What proof for your hate messages? Read your own messages where you start making unprovoked statements of my background/nation without me ever asking about your background. I got into asking about you only after you made some wrong assumptions of my background and start talking ill of it. Want proof? Read your own goddamn messages.

Where are you from? Pakistan? How old are you?

You not impressed with my country? Then why are your countrymen desperately standing in line and begging to be let in to my nation? Do you see me talking bad about your nation in general like that? I care about the plights of common people in your part of the world thanks t bad policies of your government and military. But in reverse you take it upon yourself to talk bad about my country.

PS: It is spelled America and not Amerika - ask your madrassah mullah for an updated textbook.

It is not only classless but incredibly cruel however I expect that from someone of Indian ethnicity! Don't expect any hospital visits from decent people when karma strikes back! Yes good people do not wish any disease even upon strangers however that does not apply to someone like you! I am more then happy to put people like you in their rightful place. What comment did I make earlier that lit a fire beneath you? Oh yes you did mention the name of a dreaded disease so don't try to run away from it now.

It is okay to hurt India India as it's a troublesome country that deserves no mercy and the same goes to America and Israel as well for that matter. We can see that India has a terrorist as PM so you are in no position to attack Pak. It is well documented to what your tea selling PM did in Godhra and is doing in IOK that is all over for everyone to see. India deserves to be attacked, that is is good thing for all peaceful people.

Once again where did I personally attack any Indian in the sense that I attacked their religion or family! What I call personal is when you speak poorly of those suffering from cancer that you are now to ashamed to admit. Don't you think for a minute that I am someone who will run away from taking on someone like you. I guess you are hurt that your PM Modi doesn't have the guts to attack Pak like he promised some days back? I am sure you are listening all this in the temple you attend where badly people walk around with coloured foreheads. Get used to it boy for I am gonna keep attacking India, America and Israel, got that?? I don't give a damn about your background however since you are anti-Pak wondered if you were Indian which you are, no surprises there.

It's none of your business boy how old I am! What country do you refer to as "yours"? Well I will tell you that far more dirt poor Indians are eager to reach America then I am moreover I am only talking about myself when saying I am not impressed by your America! You need to ask other Pakistanis why they go to America, I am not a representative for the entire Pakistani community that you are asking me. You are free to talk poorly about my country besides you have done just that above with your claptrap of "evils done" by Pak. I don't like India, America or Israel that is not to say all people associated with these countries are bad.
