'Spectacular' Barca star Yamal finds new ways to amaze

After lighting up the European Championship last summer, Lamine Yamal is still finding new ways to amaze those watching him in action.

The 17-year-old wrote his name into the Champions League history books on Tuesday night, becoming the youngest player ever to score and assist in the competition as he helped Barcelona beat Benfica to reach the quarter-finals.

This season he has contributed to 28 goals, and is approaching 60 goal contributions for club and country.

And just to emphasise - he is only 17.

That goal he scored earlier was stunning. It was like a chip shot with his side foot. Astonishing!

Lamine Yamal to be investigated over dwarfism row

Spain's Ministry of Social Rights has asked the country's prosecutor's office to investigate Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal after he reportedly hired people with dwarfism to perform at his 18th birthday party.

Lamine Yamal hosted a party on Sunday at a rented property in Olivella, a small town 50 kilometres north west of Barcelona, with guests including YouTubers, influencers, and several Barcelona team-mates.

It is alleged Lamine Yamal hired a group of entertainers with dwarfism, something the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE) described as "unacceptable in the 21st century".

When contacted by BBC Sport, the Directorate General for People with Disabilities - part of the Ministry of Social Rights, ConsumerAffairs, and 2030 Agenda - said: "ADEE has filed a legal complaint.

"Therefore, this Directorate General has asked the Prosecutor's Office to investigate to determine whether the law and, therefore, the rights of people with disabilities have been violated."

The ADEE said it "publicly denounces the hiring of people with dwarfism as part of the entertainment," and said it would take legal action as it "perpetuates stereotypes, fuels discrimination, and undermines the image and rights" of people with disabilities.

In a statement it said: "These actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful.

"The general law on the rights of persons with disabilities expressly prohibits the following practices: 'Shows or recreational activities in which people with disabilities or other circumstances are used to provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision from the public in a manner contrary to the respect due to human dignity are prohibited'."

However, Spanish radio station RAC1, external broadcast an interview with someone claiming to be one of the entertainers present at the party who defended Lamine Yamal.

"No-one disrespected us, we worked in peace," said the artist, who asked to remain anonymous.

"I don't understand why there's so much hype. We're normal people, who do what we want, in an absolutely legal way.

"We work as entertainers. Why can't we do it? Because of our physical condition?

"We know what our limit is and we will never exceed it: we are not fairground monkeys."

The performer said it lasted one hour, and afterwards the entertainers joined in with the party.

"We dance, we distribute drinks, we do magic... there are many types of shows. Everyone had a great time."

When approached for comment by BBC Sport, a Barcelona spokesperson said the club was "not in a position to comment on an act that falls strictly within the private sphere", but added their position would be reassessed once "concrete information" has been ascertained.

Injured Yamal out of Spain World Cup qualifiers

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is out for "two to three weeks" after aggravating a groin injury and will miss Spain's World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria next week.

The 18-year-old, who missed four games after the issue first arose on international duty in September, returned to action on Sunday when he came off the bench to help Barcelona to a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

But the injury flared up again after Yamal played in Barcelona's Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain on Wednesday.

This is what Spain football manager Luis de la Fuente had to say about Yamal's absence from the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

"The injury risk is always there. If Lamine Yamal plays for Barça, why wouldn't he play for Spain?"

“Risk in football will always exist. When they arrived here, they were already playing regularly with their clubs, so the situation was no different with the national team. Everything given to them is within the rules and handled by the doctors. These are routine, completely normal procedures that also happen in their clubs — we shouldn’t treat it as if it’s something dangerous.

"I don’t think I made a mistake with Lamine’s physical management. The risk is zero, only the normal risk that comes with playing football, whether here or at his club. Whoever comes here does so healthy and fit to play."

Lamine Yamal injured himself as he scored the penalty that gave Barcelona a narrow victory over Celta Viga and extended their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points.

The 18-year-old converted from the spot in the 40th minute at the Nou Camp after he skipped into the box and was brought down by Yoel Lago.

But straight after slotting past Celta keeper Ionut Radu, Lamine Yamal signalled to the bench and went to ground clutching his left hamstring.

He limped off the pitch with the help of team doctors and headed straight down the tunnel as he was replaced by Roony Bardghji.

The injury will also be a worry for Spain with fewer than 50 days before the start of the World Cup.

"We have to wait," Barcelona boss Hansi Flick said after the match.

"We have to see what it is. I think there's something, because he felt it and after the goal he would not leave the pitch without a reason. Hopefully, it's not so bad."

The victory moves reigning La Liga champions Barcelona - who have six games left -a step closer to retaining their title.

Flick will hope Lamine Yamal's injury does not keep him out of next month's Clasico meeting with second-placed Real Madrid.

Lamine Yamal, who has scored 16 goals and assisted 11 more in La Liga this term, was named the Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024 as Spain lifted the trophy.

"I hope [his injury] is for as few weeks as possible. He'll be tested and we'll see what it is," Barcelona and Spain midfielder Pedri told Movistar Plus.

"I wish him the best of luck, and he should stay calm - he's young and will surely recover well."
