A gunman firing from a Las Vegas hotel rained a rapid-fire barrage on a huge outdoor concert festival on Sunday night, sending thousands of people fleeing until SWAT units found and killed him. More than 20 victims died, and more than 100 others were wounded, officials said.

Online video of the attack outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino showed the country singer Jason Aldean performing outside at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event, interrupted by the sound of automatic gunfire. The music stopped, and concertgoers ducked for cover. “Get down,” one shouted. “Stay down,” screamed another.

Several SWAT teams were sent to the hotel immediately after the first reports of the shooting at 10:08 p.m., and officers overheard on police radio reported being pinned down by gunfire. Shortly before midnight the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that “one suspect is down,” and soon thereafter the police said they did not believe there were any more active gunmen.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of Clark County told reporters early Monday morning that more than 20 people were killed and “well in excess of 100-plus injured.” He did not identify the dead gunman, but he said the police were seeking “a companion” named Marilou Danley, a woman he described as Asian and 4-foot-11.

Video of the shooting captured nine seconds of rapid-fire, continuous bursts, followed by 37 seconds of silence from the weapon amid panicked screaming. The barrage of gunfire then erupted again in at least two more rounds, both shorter than the first.

In the confusion after the shooting, the police also descended on the Ali Baba Restaurant, about a 10-minute drive from the Mandalay Bay, and they also investigated reports of a shooting at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino, not far from the concert ground.

The police reported clearing out the Mandalay Bay’s 29th floor and working their way up to the 32nd floor. A police Twitter post described reports of an “active shooter” near or around the Mandalay Bay casino.

Video from the shooting showed Mr. Aldean, the final performer of the night, running off the stage as the gunfire erupted.

Two concertgoers described hearing round after round of gunfire.

“It just kept coming,” one of the witnesses, Robyn Webb, told The Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It was relentless.”

They said they saw about 20 people bleeding in the street.

“That’s when we knew for sure it was real,” said her companion, Matt Webb.

The police reported closing off about a mile of Las Vegas Boulevard and asked the public to steer clear of the area.

Police radio reports suggested that at least three people were transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for treatment. The police were told not to bring additional casualties — unless the injuries were life-threatening — to University Medical Center, another nearby hospital, because it was at capacity.

A photo posted by a Review-Journal photographer showed emergency responders transporting one injured person in a wheelbarrow.

McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas said that some flights destined for the airport were diverted because of police activity. The airport is just east of the Mandalay hotel, and after the shooting there were reports of people fleeing the concert by running onto an airport runway.

The hotel itself was placed on virtual lockdown after the shooting, guests said.

“We went into the hotel and they started shutting down casinos,” Todd Price, a guest of Mandalay Bay, told CNN. “We tried to get into our rooms, and they shut down the elevators and started to get everybody out.”

The Route 91 Harvest Festival bills itself as “three days of country music on the Vegas Strip,” and Sunday night’s performance was the last of the festival. The site of the concert, the Las Vegas Village and Festival Grounds, run by MGM Resorts, sprawls over 15 acres and has a capacity of 40,000 people. The festival’s website said this year’s three-day concert was sold out.

100 Injured.

Gunman was shooting from a elevated Hotel position.

Horrible, RIP to the victims.

Wow shocking.

RIP to all the dead. 20 people killed?

Saw a video on Twitter, it sent chills down my spine.

Police saying the shooter was a "local man" but had a female accomplice who was "Asian".

Americans usually refer to Orientals as Asian, although this time I have a feeling that's not the case. Disgusting act regardless, although that hardly needs saying.

Yes you are right - some news reports suggesting the name sounds oriental.

Police name Stephen Paddock , age 64 , as Las Vegas shooting suspect. He was killed by the police.
Another deranged white guy.

Las Vegas resident Stephen Paddock - a 64 year old - has been identified as the gunman. The accomplice was an Asian - Marilou Danley.

More than 50 people were killed and 200 injured when a lone gunman opened fire from a perch high up in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Sunday night, police said, making it the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

The "nonstop gunfire," according to one witness, sent bystanders outside the resort on the Vegas strip ducking for cover and scrambling for their lives. Tourists hid in their hotel rooms and flights headed into the McCarran International Airport were held elsewhere.

Bystanders sprang into action, caring for the wounded and at least one described someone dying in their arms.

Police said a Las Vegas police officer who was off-duty attending the concert is among the dead.

One video showed the terrifying aftermath as the injured lay on stretchers or on the ground with responders and bystanders surrounding them to give aid. Bystanders made makeshift stretchers out of police barricades, plugged wounds with their hands and used their clothing to try to stanch the bleeding from the wounded.

Videos filmed by onlookers gave a window into the chaos that ensued, with some thinking that fireworks were going off. The final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival was taking place across the street from Mandalay Bay. Jason Aldean was the night's headliner; other performers included country stars Jake Owen, Big & Rich, Luke Combs and Dylan Scott.

In the wake of the shooting, the Las Vegas Police Department said the suspected gunman, who was believed to be a local resident, was on 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay hotel. Police responded to the scene, engaged him and he is now dead. Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock.

Authorities were looking for a companion of the shooter, Marilou Danley, and authorities later said this morning, "We're confident -- but not 100 percent sure -- we have located the female person of interest."

"We were just at the concert there, and Jason Aldean was playing," one of the concertgoers, named Mike Cronk, 48, a retired teacher, told ABC News. "Kind of sounded like some fireworks going off. I think there was the first kind of volley, and then all of the sudden second volley. My buddy's like, 'I just got hit, you know.' He got hit three times. Then people started diving for the ground. And it just continued.

"It was pretty much chaotic," Cronk continued. "Lots of people got hit. ... It took a while to get him out. We had to get him over the fence and hiding under the stage for a while, you know, to be safe. And, finally, we had to move him because he had three chest wounds."

Cronk said his group were finally able to track down an ambulance "and basically the one guy ended up dying in my arms because he was bleeding," he said. "And my buddy got in there. We got three more people in the ambulance. ... But I just got a message from my buddy -- and he's going to be okay."

As bursts of gunfire crackled in the air, people outside of the casino ducked and screamed, according to video filmed by witnesses.

"We're going to get trampled if we don't go," a bystander could be heard saying in a dramatic video of the incident. Confusion appeared to abound as those outside fled the scene with another person saying, "it's fireworks."

Michelle Leonard, who was located in a booth near the main entrance of the arena, said the shooting just “kept going nonstop.”

Leonard said “mass confusion” unfolded as people tried to flee the scene. She said the shooting seemed like it went on for more than a minute.

“I had no idea of where it was coming from or where to run to," Leonard said.

She said she injured her leg as she tried to escape.

Another witness, Jake Freeman, said he was standing on the rooftop of a nearby hotel when the shooting broke out.

“I had a bird’s-eye view” of the shooting, Freeman said in a phone interview with ABC News. He said he saw "crowds of people running” as people “dropped to the ground.”

“At the moment we didn’t realize that they were being shot,” he said.

Aldean, who performed at the country concert Sunday night, wrote on Instagram, "Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still dont know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night."

An official with McCarran International Airport said "an airport perimeter fence near the concert venue was breached by people fleeing the scene of the incident."

"Airport staff responded and have transported those people to the designated evacuation site," the officials said. "The fence line is once again secured."

Flights in and out of the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas were temporarily halted due to the incident.

ATF agents have responded to the scene and the FBI is assisting with the investigation. The FBI is also supporting local law enforcement efforts in Las Vegas.

Mandalay Bay Resort tweeted, "Our thoughts & prayers are with the victims of last night's tragic events. We’re grateful for the immediate actions of our first responders."

The resort said in a statement that "law enforcement requested that we put hotels in the vicinity on lockdown to ensure guest safety."

President Donald Trump tweeted, "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!"

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval tweeted, "A tragic & heinous act of violence has shaken the #Nevada family. Our prayers are w/ the victims & all affected by this act of cowardice."

"Pray for Las Vegas," Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said via Twitter. "Thank you to all our first responders out there now."

far right conservative media is already pushing the narrative that he was a revert to Islam, citing some random now deleted Israeli source, that not even Fox News is taking seriously.

While we dont have any facts, there desperation is telling.

Also what's telling is that the police are saying the guy shot himself before the police breached the hotel room

Its funny how its okay to politise something in every way possible apart from mentioning the lack of gun laws

White people seem seriously messed up now a days judging by the increasing frequency of these events.
Time for a little dose of civilization.

And they still will do nothing about guns.

Whites are the most curious race there is. Whether it's scientific discovery, or doing drugs or being serial killers.

They blow away every other group when it comes to trying something new. It's not a prejudiced comment it's my observation.

It might end up being called terrorism after all! :trump

What is this some sorta ISIS-KKK collaberation?
Should act as a cultural bridge for extremists from both sides.

The whole purpose of Isis's terrorism in the West is to create a sense of fear as well as getting publicity for themselves. Simply claiming they did it achieves both objectives. See how everyone is now speculating about Isis's involvement (or not)?

Unfortunate, everyday just to wake up and see nothing has happened would be nice.

The so-called Islamic State group has released a statement through its news agency saying it was behind Sunday night's mass shooting.

Police had previously said that they did not believe the gunman - Las Vegas local Stephen Paddock - was connected to any group.

They said they had no idea what Paddock's motive or belief system was and described him as a "distressed individual".
Yes of course you were responsible for a 64 year old white guy from Las Vegas. These guys are such opportunists, they'll claim responsibility for anything.

The era of peace in the west has come to an end. Those in their teens to 30s and living in Europe and USA will have a difficult 20-30 years until the cycle of peace and tolerance comes back again.

How are Americans not protesting in huge numbers against the gun laws is beyond me,apparently according to Hilary's tweet NRA wants to make silencer for guns more easily available.

This is one thing I commend Obama for (although he has too much blood on his hands), that he tried to rein in the gun culture in gunited states of america.

Obama was good for Americans,he just wasn't good for Middle east that's only point I spoke against him on which his biased supporters outside America didn't understand, Obamacare was also need of the hour, the guy saved their economy from tanking, also knew how to speak.

I dont like the tone of some of the comments on here. 50 innocent people have died, they were someone's mum, dad etc. We know Trump is a complete cretin but its sad day when people come down to his level.

ISIS have to be the biggest trolls around.Really admire their PR team.Guess it helps that most of them come from pretty affluent backgrounds from Europe compared to the al qaeda who had most of its leadership made up of ganwar mullahs and thus lost the race to the Islamic State and have now just reduced to a mere small group.

Reports now suggesting death toll now has risen to 58 and people injured has risen to 515.

White people seem seriously messed up now a days judging by the increasing frequency of these events.
Time for a little dose of civilization.

Every society has its set of messed up people but the difference is, in most other societies and countries they don't give guns and automatic weapons in the hands of these messed up people, so the damage they do in other countries is significantly less.

Luckily we live in a free society and we don't tone police people expressing opinions. If you don't like it you can always go live in the US under your hero Trump.

Good analysis. Trump is just proving these American leaders do not care if people are killed at home or abroad but use the death of innocents for their own political agendas. These people are the lowest of the low, so called leaders of the free world which is laughable.

How did 500 get injured!? Was there a stampede?

That will be a political suicide, the only one came closer to strongly condemned it and do anything about it was Obama.

The guy wasn't Muslim, so on the news they are calling it a hate crime/mass shooting.

It's clearly terrorism though.

There is only difference of "religion" in describing an act of mayhem as terrorism or mass-shooting.

Nevertheless, the capitalist Trump and apologists of gun violence are not expected to do anything to make gun laws more effective.

This made me share few words from President Eisenhower's farewell speech.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Eisenhower's speech pointed towards the future wars of Vietnam and Iraq etc. But this mass shooting menace is also linked to this military industrial complex.

Not minutes after such a terrible attack takes place and people start analyzing and ponting out flaws in every word Trump says.

the guy who did it was an old white millionaire

legitimate for people to ask why Trump isn't calling for ban on all old white millionaire men ?

How did 500 get injured!? Was there a stampede?

He was in an elevated position in a hotel room with 10+ rifles on hand, could've done serious damage before police came to pin him down like deranged dog he was.

Still can't get my head around this guy's motives. He was a millionaire as well so not like he was ever going to want for anything.

Maybe he was just frustrated because he was coming to his end years and couldn't face it?

could you guys please stop

when someone kills people the first thing that is looked at is the motive.

Terrorism is a motive, to spread terrorism is a motive.

When a terrorist(most of the time muslim) carries out a terrorist attack he lets everyone know the motive. His backers let everyone know the motive of terrorism.

Here the guys motive is being looked at first

Thanks. Can I request that you also stop, if we are looking at motives only then you should also leave out the totally unnecessary reference that the terrorism is usually carried out by Muslims. The last thing we need here is point scoring when a tragedy like this unfolds.

No it is not legitimate.

It is frankly stupid. But thats expected of you so no worries

obviously mentally ill.

You could say that about just about all mass killers, but it's the background which provides the context.

i think the problem is the other ones actively use islamic literature as what inspired them to do these attacks whereas these giuys arent really identifying any doctrine for their actions

Yes this guy was shooting at those people out of love and affection.

I don't think there is that much of a disconnect. This guy might have been mentally ill, but it still takes some organisation to collect an array of weapons like he did and arrange them in such a manner he could kill over 50 people from a carefully selected vantage point. It seems almost more cold blooded than the idiots who pull a knife at a train station and try and stab random passengers.

Not minutes after such a terrible attack takes place and people start analyzing and ponting out flaws in every word Trump says.

blind Trump supporter.

Trump in last month singed on a bill which would allow mentally disabled to buy guns.

Congress was going to vote for and 99% chances they will pass the bill on purchasing silencer.

He is a president, not a 12 years old princess. He should be criticized where it needed.

I think its a culture of free / easily available guns and growing up around such instances of gunfiring and related violence, and a society that encourages it leads to an environment that makes Americans so prone to such deranged behaviour.

It is sort of like desis (Indians especially) and the "rape-culture" here, though it is not as prevalent as the gun culture in the states.

yes the 'mental illness' is nothing to do with their nurture and nature as entitled First World Americans who can commit violence on others with impunity

a 'virtue' embodied in the 'best' Presidents (Obama) and the 'worst' Trump

you expect people won't follow their 'leaders' ?

RIP poor souls...

This guy is just another psychopath like the Norway terrorist Brevik.

Think this afflicts a lot of people on here as well

Roughly 33,000 people in US are killed by gun violence each year and 70,000+ are injured according to Center fo Disease Control(US Government).

Yes this diseased Country commits 10 9/11's on itself every year as well as visiting death and destruction on it's 'enemies' around the World

Criticize him on his policies, not every adjective that he uses.

What does having a silencer have to do with this? Do you know what silencers do?

First please answer in which country do you reside?

And then please explain what silencer does, and then I’ll decide if it’s worth getting in debate with trump’s blind supporter as I wish not to waste my time.

Another fact, I criticized him on his policy, please re-read what I have said in my post.

LAS VEGAS: The girlfriend of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock arrived back in the United States Tuesday evening and was met by FBI agents eager to hear whatever she might know about the motive behind his slaying of 58 people and wounding of more than 500 in the worst mass shooting in US history.

Although the FBI wants to talk to her, Marilou Danley, 62, is not in custody – she is classified as a “person of interest” to investigators – and is free to go wherever she wants, US media reported.

She was in the Philippines when Paddock opened fire with high-power rifles from a 32nd floor hotel room Sunday night at a sea of concertgoers below on the Las Vegas strip.

Authorities are investigating reports that while she was in the Philippines, Paddock wired her $100,000.

Danley is an Australian citizen who moved to the United States 20 years ago to work on the casino strip, the Australian government confirmed Tuesday.

As America mourned, President Donald Trump prepared to visit the desert city Wednesday. He has branded Paddock a “demented man.”

Beyond Trump’s assessment, authorities were at a loss as to how a 64-year-old gambler and retired accountant had hauled a vast arsenal of weapons to the hotel and launched his assault.

Meanwhile, victims began to be identified in the media, each new story stirring emotions as America once again grappled with calls for reforms to its permissive firearm control laws.

Trump was not ready to suggest answers.

“What happened in Las Vegas is in many ways a miracle,” he said. “The police department has done such an incredible job, and we’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by.”

US officials have reacted cautiously to a claim by the Islamic State militant group that the shooter had carried out Sunday night’s massacre on its behalf.

Experts cautioned that the group – under pressure in its Syrian and Iraqi heartlands – may be trying to rally its supporters with a false claim.

IS claimed Paddock was one of its “soldiers” but the FBI said it had found no such connection so far.

Authorities said Paddock, who had no criminal record, smashed windows in his hotel room shortly after 10pm on Sunday and rained fire on a crowd of 22,000 attending a country music concert below.

In footage of the massacre, the sustained rattle of gunfire is heard as people scream and bolt for cover with little idea of where the shots were coming from.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Paddock fired through the door of his hotel room and hit a security guard in the leg.

But when a SWAT team stormed the room where Paddock had been staying since September 28, they found he had killed himself.

Authorities have seized 47 firearms from three locations, they said late Tuesday.

So far, investigators have found nothing to explain the actions of the gunman, but were continuing to hunt and trace every possible clue about a gunman they described as a “psychopath.”

“For this individual to take it upon himself to create this chaos and harm is unspeakable,” Lombardo told journalists Tuesday, saying the shooter’s degree of preparation made it clear the attack was extensively premeditated.

Details started to emerge Tuesday about some of the victims – a kindergarten teacher from California who had married her childhood sweetheart, a Tennessee nurse, a high-school secretary from New Mexico.

Stories of heroism also surfaced. Bruce Ure, deputy police chief of the small Texas city of Seguin, was in the concert’s VIP section when the gunfire broke out.

He sheltered from the bullets between two buses, then tended to three people who had been shot. Ure loaded the bleeding strangers into a passing car and rode with them to a hospital.

“They were all crying, and I was too,” he told AFP. “They were saying that ‘We’re going to die, we’re going to die,’ and I still remember telling them: ‘Not tonight, not tonight. Tonight’s not your night. You’re going to be ok.’ Because I truly believed it.”

While the White House has rebuffed calls to reopen the fraught US debate on gun control, Congress did shelve a controversial plan to make it easier to purchase gun silencers and make it more difficult to classify certain ammunition as “armor piercing.”

According to his brother, Paddock was a high-stakes gambler and their bank-robber father was once on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list.

But Eric Paddock said his brother had led an otherwise normal life.

“He liked to play video poker. He went on cruises. He sent his mother cookies,” he said.

“We’re lost,” his brother said.

Paddock’s neighbors in Mesquite were similarly dumbfounded to discover the killer lived in their midst.

“This is just a quiet, sleepy little community. It just blew me away,” said Rod Sweningson.

“We’ve never even thought about locking our doors. We didn’t know we lived two doors down from a lunatic.”
