Another gem bows out today... Malinga , an amazing bowler ... will miss his hairstyles and slingerz

1 thing that i always thought that he was too nice a guy ... as a fast bowler, he was too smiley ... didint upset the batsmen enough.. had he been the rough and abusive bowler, he could have added atleast 100 more wickets...

But all in all a superstar.... how will SL galvanize after their last star is gone will be interesting

He was good until the 2 new balls rule was introduced and that was around when his fitness started dropping. Just look at Malinga`s stats in 2011 compared to 2012.

He was ODI great specially T20s. obviously 2 new balls made him slightly less effective as his action was perfect for old balls reverse swing.

Malinga strikes against Iqbal. Malinga has channeled his pre 2012 self for his last game

One of the very best in the shorter formats.

I really enjoyed watching him and his last hurrah through the world Cup was great fun!

One of best bowlers ever. Supreme reader of the game.

And he achived everything his way!

He won them T20 world cup 2014. What a champion spell was from him.

He even did well in 2011 final but other bowlers didn’t support him at all.

He was absolutely world class during his peak. Then he had a few bad years at the end of his career as age caught up with him, but the final 1-2 years of his career have been superb!

Excellent bowler. His peak was frightening. Don't think he is an ATG but he is below that. Even now he is still producing magical moments.

Legend finally retires. One of the best LOI bowlers in modern times.

Have a great retirement.

There is a video on YouTube on his first ever international wicket. You guys should see it, same action but he looks like a little kid. Great bowler and he enjoyed bowling yorkers.

One of the best yorker bowlers in the game. On his day he could tear through a batting lineup as he did vs South Africa in the 2007 World Cup.

His knees and ankles has taken such a battering so I'm relieved the Slinger called it a day.

What a bowler.

Superb action and his yorkers were pin point perfect. A legend.

In the death overs, everyone knew how the opposition will play Malinga will decide the match.

Not many bowlers in modern cricket have that.

That makes Malinga an ODI great.

Very good. Arguably the best ever T20I bowler and a top 5 ODI bowler. In ODIs I think only (in no particular order) Wasim, Waqar, Murali, McGrath and perhaps Starc were/are better.

Safe to say that Malinga is a LOI legend. Thats how good he was.

Only a peak gul could have matched his yorkers.

He is most influential bowler of all time .he might have not achieved atg level records but he is certainly one of the most inspirational cricketers who have fans from all cricket playing countries.

He have given india bumrah who are on his way to be best ever fast bowler for india

One of the best limited overs bowlers ever. Even his test record isn't that bad but his body wasn't going to handle that workload with the action. Will be remembered for those amazingly consistent yorkers.

Be a match-winner to survive in cricket, Lasith Malinga says

Sri Lanka’s third highest ODI wicket-taker signs off with three wickets

Colombo: “You have to be a match-winner,” is the golden rule to survive in veteran pacer Lasith Malinga’s golden words for the youngsters after playing his final ODI for Sri Lanka in front of his home crowd.

On Friday, Malinga brought an end to his illustrious ODI career with a wicket off the last ball he bowled in the first ODI of the three-match series against Bangladesh - which Sri Lanka won by 91 runs. He took 3/38 and went past Anil Kumble’s tally of wickets in the 50-over format.

Malinga directed his typical yorkers to dismiss openers Tamim Iqbal (0) and Soumya Sarkar (15) to reduce Bangladesh to three for 30. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 67 and Sabbir Rahman made 60 in a brief fight.

Malinga also picked up the last wicket of the Bangladesh innings when Thisara Perera held a skier from tailender Mustafizur Rahman.

Malinga finished with 338 wickets in 226 matches, finishing as one of the finest match-winners to have played for Sri Lanka since 2004. He is Sri Lanka’s third highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket after Muttiah Muralitharan (523) and Chaminda Vaas (399).

After the match, he insisted it was the right time for him to retire as Sri Lanka begin rebuilding for the next World Cup. The pacer bowler, who will turn 36 next month, urged the younger generation to step up.

“My captains expect me to take wickets,” Malinga said at the post-match presentation. “I tried my best all through my career. I hope all the young bowlers do this as well. Because just surviving in cricket, I don’t think anyone can go far. You have to be a match-winner.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to in the future. These young bowlers have to get match-winning performances and people have to say, ‘That’s a match-winning bowler!’ We have a couple of guys, they have the ability and we have to look after them.”

He is the only bowler to have taken three ODI hat-tricks. He achieved his highest ranking of seventh in November 2011, achieved against Pakistan in Dubai.

Malinga chose to bow out in front of the home crowd, and they turned out in huge numbers to send him off.

“I’ve played the last 15 years for Sri Lanka. Really an honour to play, and really happy to play for these people and for all crowd that’s been behind me,” he said. “I feel this is the time I have to move on because we have to build for the 2023 World Cup and that’s why I realised, ‘OK, my time is up, I have to go’.”

His World Cup record was phenomenal - was instrumental in getting his side to the final of the 2007 and 2011 events. He did well in the other two WCs he played in too.

Did well in every World Twenty20 too and helped his side to win the 2014 event where he made Yuvraj and Dhoni look like club level batsmen that day.

Was brilliant in pretty much every Asia Cup he played in too.

A limited over great bowler who had frighteningly amazing skills with the ball with the yorkers he bowls.

That he lasted this long with an action many thought would destroy him is itself a wonder.

Great performances especially in WCs. Easily an ATG limited over bowler. Seems a nice humble guy too. Think he wasn't too hardworking though - Sanga indulgently suggested this as Lasith walked off for the final time in England.

An ODI great.. He has created an impact towards the game and left a legacy behind him. Fantastic career.

Good odi bowler and ipl legend. Don't know about him being good. He was accused of sexual assaulting a girl in Mumbai hotel. It happened 4yrs back. Don't know how much of it is true but it became a big issue back then. Hope it is fake.

Malinga has now equalled Shahid Afridi's tally of 98 scalps in T20Is.

4 for 2 from 4 overs at the moment versus New Zealand.

Malinga should tour Pakistan for t20s. Pakistani fans deserve to see this legend playing infront of them

Another Double Hattrick (AKA 4 wickets in 4 balls). Malinga is legendary.

Yorker Master of Cricket. No one in the world bowls better yorkers than he does.

Excellent limited overs bowler. Vaas and Malings will open the bowling for my SRL all time XI.

Four wickets in four balls, twice in his international career now, this time around in T20I cricket. An insane video to watch him achieving this feat. What a cricketer, what a bowler. One of the best ever in Limited-Over cricket, well and truly. When he runs in to bowl in his country, it seems as if the whole of Sri Lanka follows him like a train. Hair raising stuff!

Sri Lanka T20I captain Lasith Malinga has admitted that he doesn't mind hanging up his boots in the shortest format if his team makes it to the knock-out stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2020.

The veteran bowler, who has already retired from the other two formats, now wants to keep the best interest of Sri Lanka cricket in mind. Sri Lanka have reached the final of the 20-over edition thrice and won it once, in 2014, when they beat India.

"I've already retired from Tests and ODIs. Now whatever is required for Sri Lanka cricket; if they say it's enough for me now then I'll be really happy to retire from T20s also," he said on the eve of the series opener against India, on Saturday, 4 January.

"My only target is to play knock-out round in the T20 World Cup. If Sri Lanka qualify for the knockouts, I would not mind retiring anytime after that."

The Men's T20 World Cup begins on 18 October this year, with Sri Lanka playing their first game against Ireland in Geelong.

Even though Malinga is leading a young side, he is confident they can give their best in the 'unpredictable' T20 format. He also added that playing against India will help them prepare well for the tournament.

"We are looking for a new start in the New Year. T20 is an unpredictable format. We can't predict who's the best. Anyone can change the momentum in one over. I want to give an opportunity to the young players. They are talented, have skills but lack experience. It's an important series to set the tone for us," said Malinga, who is the only bowler to take 100 wickets in T20Is.

Malinga also said that Sri Lanka will be targeting India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is returning to the side from an injury. Malinga, who has played alongside Bumrah in the Indian Premier League doesn't mind sharing some tips to outwit the bowler, but expects the batsmen to be equally smart while facing him.

"He's [Bumrah] has got the skill and accuracy. But coming after the injury when you don't play much cricket for the last four months, the bowlers struggle to get into the rhythm for the first few matches. We want to use that to our advantage.

"I can pass all the information of his attitude and bowling skill. But batsmen will have to be smart enough to handle him carefully," he said.

Sri Lanka play first of the three T20Is on Sunday, 5 January in Guwahati.
